Common Fig or Fig Kills the Melanoma Cells in Vitro

By Kyle J. Norton

Skin is the largest organ in the body with function to protect the internal organs and tissues against foreign organisms infection, leading organs and tissue injury and damage.

It also is the third organ behind the liver and kidney to eliminate body toxins if the first 2 fails to cleanse them all.

What are the exact causes of skin damage? Some researchers suggested that long-term exposure to the sun is the most common cause of skin damage. UV rays can damage the DNA of skin cells, affecting the normal skin cell growth. UV rays have been linked to the early onset of skin cancer, epidemiologically.

Skin melanoma is a skin cancer characterized by the alternation of the pigment-containing cells known as melanocytes. However, in rare cases, melanoma can also occur in the mouth, intestines, or eye.

The 4 most common types of skin melanoma include
* Superficial spreading melanoma, the type of cancer has a tendency to spread grow outward and spread across the surface of the skin, accounted for 70% of all melanoma skin cancer.

* Nodular melanoma normally grows down into the skin and has a tendency to spread more quickly than other types of melanoma skin cancer.

* Lentigo malignant melanoma, most common in the older population, making up approximately 15% of all melanoma skin cancer.

* Acral lentiginous melanoma, most common in people with darker skin. Cancer first moves outward before spreading deeper into the skin.

The causes of melanoma skin cancer are associated with the alternation of the pigment cells in the skin.

However, according to the epidemiological studies, genetic mutation inherited from the parent, exposure to the environmental toxins and sun UV rays are the most common causes associated with the increased risk of melanoma skin cancer.

According to the statistic, melanoma skin cancer is increasing and anticipated to continue to rise. In the United States, approximately 70,230 new cases of melanoma were diagnosed, causing the death of 8,790.

Fig is a species of F. Carica, belonging to the family Moraceae. It is a deciduous shrub, native to Southeast Asia. The tree can grow to a height of 33 ft and the fruit can be as large as 2.0 inches.

On finding natural compounds for the treatment of skin diseases, researchers examined the latex of fig fruit (Ficus carica) free radical-scavenging activity on 1,1-diphenyl-2 picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and its phototoxicity on A375 human melanoma cells.

According to the tested differentiation.
* The latex obtained from the fruits of Ficus carica cv. Dottato showed the best antiradical activity with an IC50 value of 0.05 mg/ml

* Furthermore, the latex obtained from the leaves demonstrated the best antiproliferative activity with an IC50 value of 1.5 μg/ml on the human tumor cell line A375 (melanoma) after irradiation at a specific UVA dose (1.08 J/cm2).

* More importantly, the application exerted no cytotoxic effect on healthy control cells.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "comparing F. carica latex of leaves and fruits,... Plant-derived natural products have long been and will continue to be an important source for anticancer drug development".

Taken altogether, common fig or fig (Ficus carica)  may be considered anti-melanoma remedy, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
