Turmeric's Curcumin Gel, the Natural Prevention and Treatment of Acne

Acne or acne vulgaris is a chronic skin disease associated with the inflammation caused by hair follicles clogged up by dead skin cells and oil from the skin.

Holistically, acne can also be caused by the system of toxins in the body due to the liver and kidney inability to cleanse all toxins in the body, leading to toxin accumulated on the skin in facilitating the acne forming.

According to  experts, there are many things you can do to prevent acne from developing, including 

* Acne care with cream and lotion
Be sure before applying skin cream or lotion in acne affected area, wash it with mild soap and tepid water because water too hot or too cold might cause the breaking of capillaries (small veins). 

The best choice of acne cream and lotion is the one made by using ingredients of natural remedies that exist in the kitchen of your home for cost-effectiveness and little or no side effects.

* Following a healthy diet with reduced intake of saturated fat
Saturated fat intake causing the build-up of cholesterol in capillaries, the small veins in your skin, leading to oily skin and skin that is easy to attract dirt.

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and for the treatment of flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

With an aim to find a potential compound for the treatment of acne with no side effects, researchers compared the effect of encapsulating curcumin, with size and zeta potential of ∼100 nm and ∼14 mV to those of azithromycin.

According to the agar diffusion assay, encapsulating curcumin showed a significant antibacterial activity through the lauric acid gel formulation by∼1.5 fold improvement compared to curcumin gel formulation. 

The combined application of encapsulating curcumin plus azithromycin exhibited significantly enhanced antibacterial effect against both macrolide-sensitive (1.81 versus 1.25 folds) and resistant strains of P. acnes (2.93 versus 1.22 folds) compared to individual counterparts.

In vivo, rat ear model induced acne, encapsulating curcumin, displayed a ∼2 fold reduction in comedones count and production of inflammatory cytokines, compared to the placebo-treated group.

In order to obtain more information about curcumin anti ance activity, researchers investigated, the visible blue light (BL, λmax = 462 nm) enhanced the antimicrobial activities of curcumin, a natural phenolic compound.

According to the tested assays, curcumin at 0.09 J/cm2 BL with 1.52 μM showed a significant decrease in the viability of Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes).

The low-dose blue light irradiation also improved the function of curcumin cytotoxic effect against the progression of P. acnes. 

Furthermore, curcumin induced membrane disruption of microbes against P. acnes.

Based on the findings, researchers wrote, " Because the safety of blue light in the mammalian cell has been proven, the photolytic curcumin treatment could support non-antibiotic therapy to eradicate P. acnes on clinical dermatology".

Taken altogether, encapsulating curcumin or the visible blue light (BL, λmax = 462 nm) enhanced the antimicrobial activities of curcumin may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of acne, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
