Turmeric Inhibits Mitochondrial Dysfunction in Neuro-degenerative Disease

Neurodegenerative diseases (NDs) are a group of conditions that primarily affect the neurons in the brain, including Parkinson's disease (PD) and Alzheimer's disease.

In other words, neurodegenerative diseases are caused by the progressive death of neurons in different regions of the nervous system.

The progressive loss of neurons induced neurological and neuropsychological signs and symptoms have also been found in comparison to the stage of disease onset of patients.

The causes of neurodegenerative diseases are unknown, however, researchers do know that the increase in age is one most consistent risk factor for developing a neurodegenerative disease, especially AD or PD, as the disease has been found over 60% in the population aged 65 and beyond compared to another group.

Dementia is a condition of deterioration of the cognitive ability of memory, thinking, language, judgment, and behavior, gradually.

The loss of mental ability in patients with dementia in most cases is severe enough to interfere with people's every life. Alzheimer's disease is the most common type of dementia in aging people.

According to the statistics, about 5-8% of all people over the age of 65 have some form of dementia, and this number doubles every five years and above that age.

And these numbers are found to increase at an alarming rate. 

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as an anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and for the treatment of flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

In the urgency to discover a natural ingredient for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases (NDs), researchers examined the effects of curcumin, a bioactive compound isolated from Tumeric on mitochondrial dysfunction.

Mitochondrial dysfunction has been found to induce oxidative/nitrosative stress and neurotoxic compounds in orchestrating the pathogenesis of various NDs.

According to the tested analysis, curcumin exerted a therapeutic beneficial effect on various disorders, especially on the CNS cells.

Most importantly, curcumin demonstrated the significant neuro- and mitochondria-protective properties against broad-spectrum neurotoxic compounds and diseases/injury-associating NDs.

Based on the results, researchers said, "we have reviewed the various effects of curcumin on mitochondrial dysfunction in NDs.

Taken altogether, turmeric processed a high amount of bioactive compound curcumin may be considered supplements for the treatment of mitochondrial dysfunction in NDs, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
