Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale), Inhibits the Breast Cancer Cells in Vitro

By Kyle J. Norton

The breast is the tissue overlying the chest muscles. in women, breasts are made of specialized tissue that produces milk (glandular tissue) and fatty tissue. The size of the women's breasts is totally determined by the amount of fat.

Breast cancer is a medical condition characterized by cell growth irregularly and disorderly in the breast tissue.

Most cases of breast cancer start in the cell on the surface of the inner lining of the breast tissue before spreading into deeper layers of the breast.

Early-stage of breast cancer in most cases first noticed as a painless lump in the breast or armpit and most often is discovered by patients or patients partner or their doctors during a routine physical exam.

The early stage of breast cancer symptoms normally include
* Lump (mass) in the breast

* Lump in the armpit (lymph nodes)

* Nipple discharge (clear or bloody)

* Inverted or retracted nipple

* Scaly or pitted skin on nipple persistent tenderness of the breast

and  Unusual breast pain or discomfort

At the advanced stage, breast cancer can travel a distance away to infect other healthy organs and tissues and induce symptoms of
* Bone pain (Secondary tumors in the bone)

* Shortness of breath (Secondary tumors in the lung)

* Unintentional weight loss and drop in appetite (Secondary tumors in the liver)

* Headaches, neurological pain or weakness (Secondary tumors in the nervous system)

Dandelion is a herbaceous perennial plant, genus Taraxacum, belongings to the family Asteraceae, native to temperate regions of the world. It has been used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat gout, eczema, acne, gall bladder, kidney, liver and urinary disorders, hypoglycemia, dyspepsia with constipation, edema, blood pressure, and heart weakness, chronic joint, skin diseases, etc.

On finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of cancer, scientists compared the anti-breast cancer effects of three aqueous extracts prepared from the mature leaves, flowers, and roots of Taraxacum officinale.

According to the tested differentiation
* The crude extract of the dandelion leaf (DLE) showed a strong activity against the growth of MCF-7/AZ breast cancer cells associated with the signaling on the surface of the cell to the DNA in the nucleus of the cell in an ERK-dependent manner.

* The aqueous extracts of dandelion flower (DFE) and root (DRE) showed no effect on the growth of either cell line, however, DRE blocked the invasion of MCF-7/AZ breast cancer cells by decreasing phosphorylation levels of FAK and SRC involved in cancer cell adhesion.

* Additionally, breast cancer cell migration associated with matrix metalloproteinases also reduced by the injection DRE.

Based on the findings, researchers suggested, "This study provides new scientific data on TO and suggests that TO extracts or individual components present in the extracts may be of value as novel anti-cancer agents".

Taken altogether, Dandelion leaves and roots may be considered remedies for the prevention and treatment of breast cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
