Beetroot, The Potent Function Food In Normalizing Your High Blood Pressure with No Side Effects

By Kyle J. Norton, Master of Nutrition

Beet juice with high in NO may be coaidered an therapy for prevention and treatment of high blood pressure with no side effects, some studies found.

Blood pressure is the force of blood pushing against the walls of the arteries as the heart pumps out blood.

High blood pressure means raising the pressure in your heart. If it stays high over time it can damage the body in many ways.

The causes of high blood pressure are associated with some factors, including unhealthy lifestyle choices, lack of physical activity and poor diet.

Dr. Beilin LJ, in the update of on lifestyle and hypertension control, wrote, "lifestyle and blood pressure control will focus on complex dietary patterns, issues related to obesity, hypertension and dietary sodium, meta-analyses on exercise, alcohol, coffee consumption, and magnesium and some recent data on antioxidant vitamins".

Therefore, if you currently have high blood pressure, you can manage and treat the condition easily by the change of diet that recommends the high intake of fruits and vegetables and whole grain and reduces intake of saturated and trans fat and limits intake of red meats, and process foods, accompanied with limiting the use of alcohol, and salt intake.

Some researchers suggested that environmental factors such as long-term exposure to chronic stress are also the prevalent risk to the syndrome onset.

Dr. Tanya M. Spruill, at the Columbia University Medical Center, in the study of the connection between chronic psychological stress and hypertension, said, "Laboratory studies have provided convincing preliminary evidence that thinking about stressful events, in addition to experiencing them directly, can delay BP recovery, (leading to the persistent onset of hypertension)."

In the explanation of psychosocial factors that inflict the onset of hypertension. If your hypertension is a result of long-term psychological stress, biofeedback, progressive muscle relaxation, stress management training, and transcendental meditation, can be helpful.

Beet is best known as the beetroot or garden beet and belong to the amaranth family. It is a perennial plant with leafy stems growing to 1–2 m tall.

Besides the major chemical constituents betalains and phenolics, it also contains a lesser amount of isobetanin, probetanin, neobetanin, indicaxanthin, vulgaxanthins, etc.

Dr. Coles LT, the lead scientist in the research team of the heart and diabetes program at the Baker IDI Heart & Diabetes Institute, Melbourne showed that consumption of beetroot juice on a low nitrate diet may lower blood pressure (BP)the major risk factor of cardiovascular events.

The results was based on a total of 50 women and 15 men participated in a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled, crossover study.

Particpants were randomized to receive 500 g of beetroot and apple juice (BJ) or a placebo juice (PL).

Volunteers also had BP measured at baseline and at least hourly for 24-h following juice consumption using an ambulatory blood pressure monitor (ABPM).

Volunteers remained at the clinic for 1-h before resuming normal non-strenuous daily activities and The identical procedure was repeated 2-wk later with the drink (BJ or PL) not consumed on the first visit.

At the end of the final phase, researchers discovered that there was a trend (P=0.064) to lower systolic blood pressure (SBP) at 6-h after drinking BJ relative to PL.

Analysis in men only (n=13) after adjustment for baseline differences demonstrated a significant (P<0.05) reduction in SBP of 4 - 5 mmHg at 6-h after drinking BJ.

These results indicated, beetroot juice will lower BP when consumed as part of a normal diet in free-living healthy adults.

Additionally, in the examining of the impact of beetroot on lower blood pressure, researchers conducted an experiment to investigate the acute effects of beetroot bread (BB) on microvascular vasodilation, arterial stiffness, and BP in healthy participants.

The acute, randomized, open-label, controlled crossover trial. included 23 healthy men received 200 g bread containing 100 g beetroot (1.1 mmol nitrate) or 200 g control white bread (CB; 0 g beetroot, 0.01 mmol nitrate).

The incremental area under the curve (0-6 h after ingestion of bread) for endothelium-independent vasodilation was greater and lower for diastolic BP (DBP; P = 0.032) but not systolic (P = 0.99) BP after BB compared with CB.

The above effects occurred in conjunction with increases in plasma and urinary nitrate (P < 0.000 1) and nitrite.

BB acutely increased endothelium-independent vasodilation and decreased DBP,

These results suggested beetroot bread (BB) lower the blood pressure by widening the micro blood vessels and decreasing the levels of  DBP, without affecting the SBP.

Dr. Hobbs DA, the lead scientists said, after taking into of co and confounders " enriching bread with beetroot may be a suitable vehicle to increase intakes of cardioprotective beetroot in the diet and may provide new therapeutic perspectives in the management of hypertension".

taken altogether, beetroot may be considered a functional food for the prevention and therapeutic agent for the treatment of hypertension without inducing any side effects.
