#ThymeHoney Inhibits #Cancer Cell Proliferation, Inducing Cancer Apoptosis and Cell Cycle Arrest, According to Studies

Honey may have a significant effect on reducing the risk and treatment of endometrial cancer, some scientists suggested.
Endometrial cancer is a chronic condition characterized by irregular cells in the tissue of the endometrium.

Most cases of endometrial cancer start on the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the endometrium. At the advanced stage, after penetrating into the deeper layers, malignant cancer cells may travel a distance away to infect other healthy tissues and organs.

Endometrial cancer has been found to metastasize to the rectum, bladder, pelvic and para-aortic lymph nodes, vagina.

The exact causes of endometrial cancer are unknown. Epidemiological studies suggested that the increase in age, more years of menstruation, never been pregnant, obesity, and use of hormone therapy are some of the major prevalent risk factors associated with endometrial cancer.

Some researchers indicated that hormone change in the women's body such as higher androgen and estrogen levels and lower levels of progesterone due to polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOs) also is a major cause of endometrial cancer.

Dr. Navaratnarajah R, the lead author in the concern of the association of polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOs) and the risk endometrial cancer, said, "Several studies have been published that appear to support this association, and it is common practice among gynecologists and physicians to prescribe hormonal treatment to reduce this perceived risk".

"The mechanism(s) underlying any association is also unclear, but it is again widely assumed that chronic anovulation, which results in continuous estrogen stimulation of the endometrium unopposed by progesterone, is a major factor".

These results clearly state that long-term overexpression of estrogen and reduced levels of progesterone are associated with the onset of the disease. However, the study of PCOs in the endometrial cancer risk should also take into account obesity, hyperinsulinemia, and hyperandrogenism, which are also features of PCOS and risk factors for endometrial carcinoma.

In the association of PCOs and endometrial cancer mortality, the doctor team indicated, that there is no evidence to link the increased mortality from endometrial cancer in women with the syndrome.

The study once again reaffirms the link of the estrogen therapy used in menopausal women for the treatment of climate symptoms. In other words, long-term high levels of estrogen compared to progesterone in the body are the major cause of endometrial cancer.

Moreover, the application of thyme honey also exerted a significant effect against Ishikawa and other cancer cell lines by inhibiting cancer cell proliferation, inducing apoptosis and cell cycle arrest.

Futhermore, the inhibition of Thyme honey also found to associated with its function in the mediation of estrogen via modulation of the estrogen receptor activity, as estrogen agonists or antagonists in cancer cell lines on a tissue type-specific manner.

The efficacy of thyme honey anti endometrial cancer was probably associated with its polyphenols and phenolic acids (vanillic acid and protocatechuic acid and p10 hydroxybenzoic acid) as these compounds have been proven to inhibit cancer-related pathways and processes

These results indicated that thyme honey monitored cell proliferation may be useful in cancer prevention, particularly, in endometrial cancer, through its agonist/antagonist properties.


Dr. Mari Jaakkola, the lead scientist in the conclusion of the study said, "Honey, especially the thyme honey, may be used as an alternative to sugar, while its incorporation in the human diet or as a food ingredient may prevent cancer-related processes, promoting thus the health of consumers".

Taken together, Thyme honey processed with major bioactive compounds polyphenols and phenolic acids may be considered a functional food for the prevention and combined with other primary therapies for the treatment of endometrial cancer without inducing any side effects
