#Phytochemical #Alliin Inhibits Metabolic Syndrome Against the Risk of #Cardiovasculardisease

Kyle J. Norton

Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of conditions that increase the risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes, including too much fat around the waist, high blood pressure, triglycerides, and blood sugar, and low HDL cholesterol.

In other words, if you process 3 of the aforementioned conditions, you are at a higher risk of heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. However, most people with metabolic syndrome have never developed
CVD and diabetes.

Other than high blood glucose, induced thirst and urination, fatigue, and blurred vision, most patients with other metabolic conditions are asymptomatic.

Epidemiologically, aging, ethnicity, obesity, medical conditions such as diabetes, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, and polycystic ovary syndrome are the most common risk factors found in patients with the syndrome.

Some researchers suggested that the promotion of the Western diet in the US over the past few decades may have a strong effect in inducing the widespread metabolic syndrome.

Dr. Drake I, the lead scientist wrote, "The 'Western' dietary pattern was inversely associated with HDL-cholesterol and positively with all other response variables (both at baseline and follow-up), but there was no association with LDL at follow-up".

And, " In conclusion, this study supports current food-based dietary guidelines suggesting that a 'Western' dietary pattern with high intakes of sugar-sweetened beverages and red and processed meats and low intakes of wine, cheese, vegetables, and high-fiber foods is associated with detrimental effects on cardio-metabolic health".

The results clearly suggested that if you are following a traditional diet with high fruits and vegetables and fewer processed foods, saturated and trans fat, and red meat accompanied with moderate exercise daily, you are at substantially decreased risk of metabolic syndrome, compared to those who follow the Western diet.

Alliin (S-allyl-L-cysteine-S-oxide) is a phytochemical compound sulfoxide,. a derivative of the amino acid cysteine, belonging to the class of sulfur compounds, found abundantly in fresh garlic and onion.

In the urgency to find a potential compound for the treatment of metabolic syndrome, researchers examined pure allicin, prepared biosynthetically by reacting synthetic alliin with an immobilized alliinase enzyme the protect against cardiovascular disease.

S-ally-mercapto captopril (CPSSA), a new stable synthetic compound produced by a chemical reaction between allicin and the angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor captopril was tested in a fructose-induced metabolic syndrome rat model.

Allicin (8 mg/(kg day)) used alone significantly reduced insulin, triglycerides, and homocysteine concentrations, and had a slight effect on SBP associated with the risk of metabolic syndrome.

On the other hand, Captopril (50mg/(kg per day)) only improved blood pressure and homocysteine.

Treatment with a low dose of CPSSA (5mg/(kg day)) lowered SBP but did not improve any other measured parameter, while treatment with a higher dose of Captopril (50mg/(kg day)) significantly decreased blood pressure, triglycerides, and homocysteine concentrations.

In other words, CPSSA exerted a strong anti-metabolic syndrome better than those of individual compounds in a dose-dependent manner.

Based on the findings, researchers wrote, " the combined molecule CPSSA integrates the anti-hypertensive, lipid-lowering, and homocysteine-reducing effects of both allicin and captopril, making it a potential cardiovascular protective agent".

Taken together, alliin may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of metabolic syndrome, depending on the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of alliin in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
