In seeking natural therapy with no side effects, scientists may have an herbal remedy for the prevention and treatment of osteoarthritis, according to studies.
Osteoarthritis (OA) is a common chronic inflammatory joint disease characterized by the breaking down of joint cartilage and the underlying bone.
Genetic predisposition, overweight, obesity, injury, and overuse of the joints are the most common risk factor associated with the onset of the disease.
Occupation with the repetitive movements of the joint is most affected by the disease.
Interestingly, osteoarthritis symptoms can come and go throughout the day and vary from person to person. The weather change has been one of the most complaints that trigger the symptoms of OA in the elderly.
Most common symptoms, according to epidemiological studies include joint pain, tenderness, and lack of flexibility and stiffness.
Some osteoporotic patients may also experience symptoms of grating sensation and bone spurs.
If you experience some of the above symptoms, you may have osteoarthritis.
Some researchers suggested that obesity may be one of the major risk factors besides the occupation with the repetitive movement of osteoarthritis in the Western world.
Dr. Lauren K. King, the lead scientist in the investigation of obesity & osteoarthritis, wrote, "The most significant impact of obesity on the musculoskeletal system is associated with osteoarthritis (OA), a disabling degenerative joint disorder characterized by pain, decreased mobility, and negative impact on quality of life".
And, "Obesity is associated with the incidence and progression of OA of both weight-bearing and non-weight-bearing joints, to rate of joint replacements as well as operative complications".
The finding strongly indicated the risk of osteoarthritis is increased by many folds in the obese population, compared to those with a healthy weight.
Honey, the rich golden liquid is a miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.
The liquid is considered healthy sweet food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweetener by many people.
In the concerns of widespread osteoarthritis (OA), a chronic degenerative joint disease, researchers investigated chrysin, a natural flavonoid extracted from honey and propolis anti-inflammatory effects.
The study included human OA chondrocytes pretreated with chrysin (1, 5, 10 μM) for 2 h and subsequently stimulated with IL-1β, an inflammatory cytokine for 24 h.
Injection of chrysin exerted a strong inhibition activity against the degradation of aggrecan and collagen-II.
Chrysin significantly inhibited the IL-1β-induced production of inflammatory cytokines such as degradation of c of NO and PGE2; expression of COX-2, iNOS.
Furthermore, chrysin also reduced the expression of matrixes such as MMP-1, MMP-3, MMP-13, and enzymes ADAMTS-4, and ADAMTS-5 associated with the progression and destruction of joints in early osteoarthritis.
In the depth analysis researchers also found that chrysin dramatically blocked IL-1β-stimulated IκB-α degradation in the activation of protein NF-κB-induced production of proinflammatory cytokines.
The results suggested that chrysin inhibits the progression of OA through several mechanisms, including enzymes and proteins involving the destruction of joint tissues.
Taken altogether, honey processed with a bioactive compound chrysin may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of OA, with no side effects, pending the confirmation of a larger sample size and multicenter human study.
