#Field Mustard Kills #LungCancer Cells by inducing Cell Cycle Arrest and Apoptosis and Suppressjng Migration, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

Cancer is a class of diseases caused by cell growth and multiplication disorderly and uncontrollably due to the alternation of the DNA.

After colonizing the entire tissues of the specific organ, the oversize tumor cell can travel a distance away from the originated site to invade other healthy tissues, via lymph or blood.

The most advanced stage of cancer may result in the death of the patient.

The lung is a vital organ of the human being, located near the backbone on either side of the heart with functions that inhale oxygen from the air and then transport them to the bloodstream to nourish the body cells' needs and to exhale carbon dioxide from the bloodstream.

Lung cancer is a condition of the abnormal growth of the cells in the lung's tissue. The most common form of primary lung cancer is derived from epithelial cells.

The exact cause of lung cancer is not identified. However, epidemiologically, smoking, second smoke, exposure to certain chemicals, family history, people who have lung disease, and excessive drinking are some prevalent factors associated with lung cancer developing.

Current and past smoking account for most cases of lung cancer. The risk of developing lung cancer is about 23 times higher in male smokers compared to non-smokers, epidemiologically.

The most common glands and organs of lung cancer metastases are adrenal glands, bones, brain, and liver.

According to the statistics provided by the American cancer society, lung cancer accounts for 14% of all new cancers diagnosed in the US. In 2018, there were about 234,030 new cases of lung cancer (121,680 in men and 112,350 in women). Lung cancer also causes the death of 83,550 in men and 70,500 in women in the same year.

In finding a potential plant that processes anti-invasive tumor activity researchers compared the effects of an n-butanol subfraction of B. Rapa L. (BRBS) anti-tumor effect on A549 lung adenocarcinoma cell.

According to the experimental results,
* BRBS treatment in a dose- and time-dependent manner, significantly inhibited the proliferation of A549 cells.

* Furthermore, by activating the increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) production to induce cytotoxic effects, BRBS significantly induced cell cycle arrest and apoptosis in A549 cells.

* Moreover, the inhibition was also found to exhibit cancer cell mitochondrial dysfunction characterized by a reduction in mitochondrial membrane potential and the release of cytochrome c, which promoted caspase-3 and poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase processing.

* Additionally, BRBS significantly suppressed the migration of A549 cells in vitro.

Collectively, scientists wrote, "BRBS inhibited A549 cell proliferation through increased ROS production and the mitochondria-dependent apoptosis pathway. Consequently, BRBS might be a potential candidate for the treatment of lung cancer".

Taken together, field mustard may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of lung cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
