Cabbage in the Prevention and Treatment of Type 2 Diabetes

By Kyle J. Norton

Diabetes is a chronic condition caused by insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream to regulate the glucose.

In other words, diabetes occurs when cells in the pancreas dying off or receptor sites clogged up by fat and cholesterol. In some cases, diabetes is also caused by allergic reactions of cells in the immune system.

Latent autoimmune diabetes in adults (LADA), similar to type 1 diabetes, is a slow-progressing form of autoimmune diabetes. The disease is caused by the pancreas inability to produce enough insulin, because of slowly die-off of insulin-producing cells.

LADA is also known as type 1.5 diabetes because the disease has characteristics of both type 1 (autoimmune in nature) and type 2 diabetes.

Therefore, LADA shares the same risk factors and symptoms similar to those types 1 and 2 diabetes.

Other types of diabetes are
* Type 1 diabetes, also known as juvenile diabetes or insulin-dependent diabetes, the most common form diabetes found in children is a condition in which the pancreas does not produce any insulin. The most common form of type 1 diabetes is caused by genetic mutation and some viruses.

As of today, there is no cure for type 1 diabetes. Treatment is focusing on managing blood sugar levels with insulin injection, diet, and lifestyle change.

* Type 2 diabetes is a medical condition characterized by insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream to regulate the glucose due to either cell in pancreas dying off or receptor sites clogged up by fat and cholesterol.

The most common symptoms of type 2 diabetes are an increased thirst that won't stop with water intake, increased hunger (especially after eating), dry mouth, frequent urination, and unintentional weight loss.

* Gestational diabetes is a form of diabetes that can occur during pregnancy, affecting between 3% and 20% of pregnant women.

Women with gestational diabetes are at an increased risk of type 2 diabetes in later life.

Cabbage is a species of Brassica oleracea belongings to the family Brassicaceae (or Cruciferae), native to the Mediterranean region along the seacoast. The veggie has a short stem of which is crowded a mass of leaves, usually green but in some varieties, it may be red or purplish.

With an aim to find a natural food for the treatment of high blood glucose, researchers examined the effect of omental adipocytes, and anthocyanins found in cabbage in the prevention of type 2 diabetes (T2D).

In rodent studies and in studies with isolated omental adipocytes, anthocyanins regulated the carbohydrate metabolism in the body by upregulation of GLUT4 (insulin-regulated glucose transporter) translocation, increased activation of PPARγ (peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ) in adipose tissue and skeletal muscles as well as increased secretion of adiponectin and leptin associated with the risk of T2DM.

Furthermore, omental adipocytes and anthocyanins reduced the inflammation status in the body.

In humans and experimental animals, anthocyanins decreased insulin resistance.

Moreover, anthocyanins also increased the uptake and utilization of glucose by tissues in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats and mice and protected pancreatic cells against necrosis.

Anthocyanins also lower glucose levels in the blood after a meal, compared to a meal without them was attributed to the inhibition of intestinal α-glucosidase and pancreatic α-amylase.

Most importantly, anthocyanins improved insulin secretion, which can have a special meaning for people with T2D.

Based on the results, researchers wrote, " The evidence from the presented studies suggests that foods rich in anthocyanins may be one of the diet elements supporting the prevention and treatment of T2D".
Taken altogether, cabbage kimchi may be used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
