Oxheart Cabbage Kills Lung cancer Cells in Virto

By Kyle J. Norton

Cancer is the class of diseases associated with the growth of the cells disorderly and uncontrollably due to the alternation of DNA.

Most cases of cancer begin in the cells on the surface of the inner lining tissues of the organ or gland. At the early stage, most cancers are asymptomatic.

The lung is a vital organ of the human being, located near the backbone on either side of the heart with functions of inhaling oxygen from the air then transporting them to the bloodstream to nourish the body cells' need and exhaling carbon dioxide from the bloodstream.

Lung cancer is a condition of the abnormal growth of the cells in the lung's tissue. The most common form of primary lung cancer is derived from epithelial cells. In the US,

At the advanced stage after colonizing most parts of the lung, the cancerous cells can travel from the primary site to infect other healthy tissue and organs a distance away.

In the US, lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths, causing 158,683 deaths, including 88,329 men and 70,354 women, according to the 2007 statistic.

Researchers do not the exact causes of lung cancer. As of today, no one knows why people with similar health conditions, family history, and race, some are susceptible to the early onset of the disease while others do not.

Some researchers suggested genetic mutation and long-term cigarette smoking are 2 major risk factors associated with the alternative of lung cell DNA.

Truly, according to the statistic, approximately 8% of lung cancers are inherited or occur as a result of a genetic predisposition.

Cabbage is a species of Brassica oleracea belongings to the family Brassicaceae (or Cruciferae), native to the Mediterranean region along the seacoast. The veggie has a short stem of which is crowded a mass of leaves, usually green but in some varieties, it may be red or purplish.

With an aim to find a natural food for the prevention and treatment of lung cancer, researchers examined the effect of oxheart cabbage extract on A549 cells.

According to the chemical differentiation, fraction II, fraction III, interverin, sulforaphane and iberin isolated from oxheart cabbage seed showed an inhibitory effect on the in vitro growth of A549 cells at a were dose-dependent manner.

More precisely, the inhibitory activity on A549 cells was as follows: sulforaphane > iberin > iberverin > fraction III > fraction II. The IC50 values were 3.53 ± 0.63, 4.93 ± 1.02, 7.07 ± 0.51, 15.56 ± 0.24 and 27.32 ± 0.63 µg mL(-1) respectively.

The cancer cells inhibition of Fraction II, fraction III, iberverin, sulforaphane, and iberin was attributed to the activation of pro-apoptotic proteins to induce cell death and increase early apoptosis and late apoptosis/necrosis.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "These results indicated that the decrease in A549 cell viability by active compounds from oxheart cabbage seed extract was due to the induction of apoptosis.

Based on the results, researchers wrote, "These findings reveal that cabbage extract protects against oxidative stress and suggest that it can be used as an alternative therapeutic strategy to prevent the oxidative stress in the heart".

Taken altogether, cabbage may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of lung cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
