Herbal Angelica In the Prevention of Prediabetes and Diabetes

By Kyle J. Norton

Diabetes is a chronic condition caused by insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream to regulate the glucose.

In other words, diabetes occurs when cells in the pancreas dying off or receptor sites clogged up by fat and cholesterol. In some cases, diabetes is also caused by allergic reactions of cells in the immune system.

The most common symptoms of diabetes are excessive thirst and hunger, frequent urination, unintended weight loss or gain, frequent fatigue, irritability and gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea.

Postprandial blood glucose is the range of blood glucose that is measured by the blood glucose test, taking after 2 hours of a meal.

At this point of measurement, postprandial blood glucose in a healthy individual usually gone back down. In other words, lower or equal to 7.8 mmol/L (140 mg/dL) 2 hours after eating is normal blood glucose found in a healthy individual.

Glycemic response is a change in blood glucose after consuming carbohydrate-containing food compared to Glycemic Index (GI), according to their effect on blood glucose levels.

In other words, the glycemic response is the change of blood glucose after the intake of a food or meal.

More precisely, healthy people who are not prediabetes or diabetes have normal blood glucose and insulin levels that rise within the range after eating, then return to the fasting levels over a short period of time.

According to the 2015 statistics by the American Diabetes Association, in the U.S. over 30.3 million Americans or 9.4% of the population are living with diabetes. Sadly, out of 30.3 million adults with diabetes, 23.1 million were diagnosed, and 7.2 million were undiagnosed.

Angelica or Dang Qui is a herb of Genus Angelica from the family Apiaceae, indigenous to China.

The herb has been used as a Queen herb in traditional Chinese medicine antispasmodic and vasodilatory agent, and to balance the hormones in women for a normal menstrual cycle and menstruation and strengthen heart, spleen, kidneys, and liver for both men and women, etc. In other words, it is used to treat gynecological ailments, fatigue, mild anemia, and high blood pressure. It has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, etc.

On findings a potential compound for the management of prediabetes, researchers examined the hypoglycemic effects of Angelica Sinensis polysaccharide (ASP), purified from the fresh roots of Angelica Sinensis (AS), in prediabetic and streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic BALB/c mice.

According to the experimental results, oral administration of ASP, after a 4-week, decreased the fasting blood glucose (FBG) levels and abnormal fasting serum insulin (FINS) concentrations in both models.

Prediabetic mice treatment with ASP showed a decrease of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) index and body weight (BW).

More precisely, parameters such as hepatic glycogen (HG) and muscle glycogen (MG) concentrations associated with the increase of insulin resistance (IR)-related inflammatory factors IL-6 and TNF-α in serum were reduced in STZ-induced diabetic mice.

According to the Histopathological examination, ASP treatment inhibited the impaired pancreatic/hepatic tissues or adipose tissues effectively in STZ-induced diabetic mice or prediabetic mice.

Based on the evidence, researchers said, "ASP efficiently exerted hypoglycemic and hypolipidemic benefits, and its potential effect was associated with the amelioration of IR. ASP can be applied in the prevention and treatment of diabetes".

Taken altogether, Herbal Angelica may be considered a remedy for the prevention of prediabetes and diabetes, pending to larger sample size and multicenter human study.
