Herbal Elecampane (Inula helenium) Induce the Death of Human Leukemic Cells in Vitro

By Kyle J. Norton

Leukemia is a medical condition arisen from the abnormal white blood cells produced by the bone marrow.

Depending on the malignant granulocytes or lymphocytes, leukemia is classified into myelogenous or lymphoblastic leukemia.

Bone marrow, containing two main types of stem cells is the soft tissue inside the hollow center of the major bone, including the spine, pelvis, underarm, leg. etc. with the main function of generating blood cells.

Believe it or not, the bone marrow produces 200 billion new red blood cells every day, to replace the blood cells that die off, along with white blood cells and platelets.

There are several forms of leukemia, including acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL), acute myelogenous leukemia (AML), chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML).

CLL and AML are the most common cancers in adults and ALL are most common in children.

In contrast to chronic leukemias that take months or years to develop, acute leukemias start and develop within days or weeks.

According to Leukemia Research, Leukemia causes the death of approximately 68,000 every year. Adults are 10 times more likely to develop the disease, compared to children.

And, Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma is the 7th most common cancer in the U.S. The 5-year survival rate for all subtypes of leukemia is 61.4 percent.

Acute leukemia is a condition caused by a rapid increase in the numbers of extreme immature white blood cells which appear in the bloodstream in the other parts of the body, including tissue and organs,

Chronic leukemia is a condition of the slow but still excessive build-up of relatively mature abnormal white blood cells. The condition has a tendency to spread slowly to other parts of the body through the bloodstream and/or lymphatic system, including chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML).

On finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of leukemia, scientists examined Gaillardin (GLN), a sesquiterpene lactone isolated from the chloroform extract of Inula oculus-christi L. on human leukemic cells.

Elecampane, also known as Horse-heal (Inula helenium) is a perennial composite plant, genus nulla, belonging to Asteraceae, native to Southern Europe, and Asia.

The plant has been used in traditional and herbal medicine in treating bronchitis or emphysema, night sweats, pulmonary tuberculosis, irritating cough, catarrhal discharges, etc.

According to tested analysis,
* GLN could induce cytotoxic effects in human acute T lymphoblastic leukemia (MOLT-4) and B cell precursor leukemia cell line (NALM-6) with IC50 values of 7.3 and 6.1 μM, respectively.

* Furthermore, GLN induces cytotoxicity through G0/G1 phase arrest followed by apoptosis in a dose-dependent manner without affecting the normal cells.

In other words, GLN showed an extend chemotherapeutic sensitivity in ALL cells by reducing VCR concentration without constraining its effectiveness.

Based on the results, researchers suggest, "(Taken together, GLN) it might act as a promising anticancer agent for the treatment of leukemia".

Taken altogether,  Elecampanemay be considered a remedy for the treatment of leukemia, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
