The common cold is a condition of viral infection of the upper respiratory system that leads to symptoms of runny nose, nasal congestion, sneezing, sore throat, cough, headache, etc.

The condition is the most commonly occurring illnesses in the entire world, with more than 1 billion colds per year reported in the United States alone.

The common cold is a self-limiting illness caused by any 1 of more than 200 viruses.

Influenza, also known as the flu, is an infectious disease caused by an influenza virus.

Influenza is no minor illness. If you are senior or have a serious heart and lung disease, you are at the greatest risk for coming down with a dangerous case of flu because your immune system might not be strong enough to fend off the infection.

There are 3 types of flu influenza: A, B, and C. the influenza virus A and B are considered seasonal flu that causes sniffling, aching, coughing, and running and stuffy nose and fever to over 20% of the general population.

Influenza virus types C tends to cause mild upper respiratory infections, similar to those of cold.

Healthy individuals who have influenza are usually recovered within one week.

However, people with immature and weakened immune system such as young children under age 5, adults older than age 65 residents of nursing homes and other long-term care facilities, chronic illnesses, such as asthma, heart disease, kidney disease, liver disease, and diabetes are not only associated with the risk of influenza but also increase the risk of influenza deadly complication.

Pregnant women and women up to two weeks postpartum due to change of the immune system and other organs have been found to make a woman more prone to influenza and influenza complications.

* A Chinese herbal cough syrup called Nin Jiom containing coltsfoot as its main ingredients (Meseyton, 2004). for the treatment of common cold symptoms

* Many chemicals found in coltsfoots such as bisabolene epoxide isolated from the flower buds of coltsfoot showed to inhibit nitric oxide synthesis in lipopolysaccharide-activated macrophages (Ryu, 1999) against the common cold virus.

* Additionally,  Oplopanone, an extract from T. farfara, has been found to process the activity of a respiratory stimulant.
