Lycopene Processes Anti Anti Platelet Aggression Activity

By Kyle J. Norton

Platelet aggregation is a condition of platelets clumping together in the blood. In most cases, the process is to protect the vascular injury against additional bleeding and microbial pathogenic invasion.

In other words, platelet aggregation is stimulated by the first-line immune response after sensing bodily injury or damage accompanied by the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines to defend
the injured area against infection.

Platelet disorders can lead to abnormal bleeding. Most common types of genetic proposition of platelet disorders including disorder of platelet adhesion, aggregation, secretion, and procoagulant activity.

If your blood platelet count falls below the normal range from 150,000 to 450,000 platelets per microliter of circulating blood, you are considered thrombocytopenia.

Believe it or not, platelet count that falls below 10,000 platelets per microliter are dangerous. Epidemiologically, severe thrombocytopenia can be fatal.

Most common symptoms of platelet disorders are unexplained bruising throughout the body, bleeding from your nose, mouth, or gums, under your skin, muscles, and joints and heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding,

In severe cases, patients may also experience symptoms of vomiting blood,  blood in your feces and internal bleeding.

Conventionally, most common medication with blood-thinning activity such as aspirin (ASA) and other drugs containing aspirin non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and some antibiotics may have a strong implication of the formation of platelets coagulation.

Tomato is red, edible fruit, genus Solanum, belonging to family Solanaceae, native to South America. Because of its health benefits, the tomato is grown worldwide for the commercial purpose
and often in the greenhouse.

Lycopene is a phytochemical found in tomato in the class of carotenoid, a natural pigment with no vitamin A activity found abundantly in tomatoes and other red fruits and vegetables, such as red carrots, watermelons, and papayas,

Tomatoes provide about 80% of the lycopene in the world diet. In plants, lycopene protects the host against excessive photodamage and perform various functions in photosynthesis.

On finding a potent ingredient for the treatment of heart disease, scientists compared the antiplatelet effect of lycopene with aspirin.

In vitro, various concentrations of Aspirin (140 μmol/L) and lycopene (4, 6, 8, 10, and 12 μmol/L) were studied against adenosine-5'- diphosphate (ADP) (2.5 μM/L) and collagen.

Based on the tested analysis, all concentrations of lycopene (4-12 μmol/L) exhibited a reduction of maximum platelet aggregation induced by aggregating agents ADP and collagen comparable with aspirin.

Furthermore, lycopene at concentration 10 μmol/L showed a maximum platelet inhibition (47.05%) of ADP, whereas lycopene at concentration 8 μmol/L showed maximum platelet inhibition (54.26%) of collagen.

In other words, lycopene protects the cardio function selectively and dose-dependently.

However, all 4 μmol/L of lycopene combined with 140 μmol/L and 70 μmol/L aspirin showed greater inhibition of platelets compared to aspirin 140 μmol/L alone, against both ADP and collagen.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "The study favorably compares lycopene and aspirin with respect to their antiplatelet activities against ADP and collagen" and "Lycopene can be considered as a potential target for modifying the thrombotic and pro-inflammatory events associated with platelet activation".

Taken altogether, lycopene found in tomato may be considered an anti-platelet aggresion phytochemical, pending on the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of lycopene in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
