Gamma-linolenic Acid Reduces the Risk of Non-Ischemic Heart Failure

The heart is a four-chambered, hollow muscle and a double-acting pump located in the chest between the lungs is a muscular organ in the human body.

The heart formed an important part of the circulatory system that pumps blood through the blood vessels to nourish the body and assist in the removal of metabolic wastes.

Non-ischemic Heart Failure is a type of heart failure that is not associated with ischemic heart failure.

According to the statistic provided by the American Heart Foundation, on average, an American dies of CVD every 38 seconds. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) accounted for 840,678 deaths in the US in 2016 and the condition also claims more lives each year than all forms of cancer and chronic lower respiratory disease combined

In 2016, cardiovascular diseases cause the death of 2,303 deaths each day, in the US.
Cardiovascular disease is defined as medical conditions affecting the cardiovascular system, including heart, blood vessels(arteries and veins).

Ischemic heart disease is defined as a condition of reduced blood supply of the heart muscle, as a result of coronary artery disease caused by plaque building up in the arteries.

Gamma-linolenic acid is a phytochemical in the group of Omega-3, 6,9 fatty acids, belongings to the class of Lipids, found abundantly in evening primrose, borage, blackcurrant, etc.

On finding a potential plant that processes anti-heart diseases activity researchers examined the effect of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) on heart failure (HF).

The study included 50 patients with stable non-ischemic HF who underwent CPETs at our hospital. 

According to the results of the analysis of the relationships between PUFAs and echocardiographic findings as well as CPET and other test parameters in patients' data.
* Correlations were significantly negative between dihomo-γ-linolenic acid (DGLA) + arachidonic acid (AA) and heart failure.

* Minute ventilation versus carbon dioxide production (VE/VCO2) slope, were positive between N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) and VE/VCO2 slope in heart failure.

* More profoundly, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) + docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) were not significantly correlated with the CPET parameters.

Based on the evidence, researchers said, " Low levels of circulating DGLA+AA and AA among PUFAs were associated with decreased exercise responses in patients with stable non-ischemic HF".

Taken altogether, potato may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of non-ischemic heart failure, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
