Fermented Soy Kills Colon Cancer Cells in Vitro

By Kyle J. Norton

Primary cancer is a class of chronic disease caused by cell growth disorderly and irregularly in the tissue of a specific organ as a result of the alternation of DNA.

Colon formed part of the digestive system including large intestine that connects to the small intestines and rectum plays a critical role to reabsorb fluids and process waste products from the body and prepare for its elimination through the rectum.
Colon cancer is relatively very common and slowly growing and progressing in a predictable way.

Most cases of primary colon cancer start in the cell on the surface of the inner lining of the colon. At the early stage. most patients with colon cancer do not experience any symptoms.

However, at the advanced stage, the tumor not only can spread to other healthy tissue and organs a distance away through blood and fluid circulation but also suppress the nearby tissue and nerve cells.

The progression of colon cancer at this stage not only induces symptoms of the change in bowel habits, the change in the consistency of your stool, that lasts longer than four weeks but also causes rectal bleeding and persistent abdominal severe pain.

According to the statistic by the American Cancer Society, in the US, there are
97,220 new cases of colon cancer diagnosed in 2018. The lifetime risk of developing colorectal cancer is 1 in 22 (4.49%) for men and 1 in 24 (4.15%) for women.

The lifetime risk of developing colorectal cancer is about 1 in 22 (4.49%) for men and 1 in 24 (4.15%) for women.

The 5-year survival rate for patients diagnosed with localized stage colorectal cancer is 90%. About 39% of patients are diagnosed at this early stage.

Researchers do not know the exact causes of the disease. A history of polyps, ethnicity, high-fat diet and low fiber, aging, the long-term infection of colon diseases are some of the prevalent risk factors associated with the onset and progression of colon cancer.

Believe it or not, colon cancer is the most slowing cancer and proliferates in a predictable way. In some patients, cancer cells can present in the colon more than 20 years before being diagnosed.

Fermented soy products are diverse varieties of soy food that are made from fermented soybeans, including miso, natto, tempeh, and soy sauce.

On finding a potential plant that processes anti-cancer potential researchers examined the effect of synbiotic fermented soymilk supplemented with xylooligosaccharides (XOS) and inoculated with Weissella cibaria FB069 (FSMXW) in the proliferation of colon cancer cell.

According to the results of the analysis,
* Both FB069 and LGG showed to grow in soy-based products and rapidly reduce their pH as a result of fermentation.

* The addition of XOS significantly enhanced the acidification rate, viscosity and total cell concentration in fermented soymilk inoculated with W. cibaria FB069.

* Furthermore, the synbiotic FSMXW showed higher dextran, folate, GABA and aglycone content.

Most importantly, FSMXW demonstrated strong inhibition of the proliferation of Caco-2 and HCT116 cell lines, by reducing the transcripts and proteins such as MD2, TLR4, MyD88, and NF-κb. in triggering an immune response induced activation of proinflammatory cytokines.

Collectively, researchers said, "The synbiotic soymilk containing XOS and W. cibaria FB069 increase nutrient and functional compounds through fermentation process".

Taken altogether, fermented soy may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of colon cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
