By Kyle J. Norton

Estrogen is a primary female sex hormone, responsible for the development and regulation of the female reproductive system and secondary sex characteristics.

The estrogenic effect is an action that stimulates the production of the hormone estrogen in case of deficiency.

On the other hand, the anti-estrogenic effect is an action of binding the estrogen receptor(ERα ) and/ERβ in inhibiting the excessive levels of estrogen circulating in the body.

Menopause is a condition in which a woman is in the transition stage of permanent cessation of the ovaries functions in egg production because of less production of estrogen and progesterone, signaling the end of the reproductive phase a woman's life.

In menopause, menstruation has become irregular and slowly stop overtime, but in some women, menstrual flow comes to a sudden halt.

Some researchers suggested that you officially enter the stage of menopause if you have gone 12 months without a menstrual period.

Menopause symptoms are a set of symptoms caused by the gradual decline of levels of estrogen and progesterone due to aging loss menstrual periods in women.

The reproductive tract, the urinary tract, the heart and blood vessels, bones, breasts, skin, hair, mucous membranes, pelvic muscles normally regulated by hormone estrogen also are affected by the decline levels of the hormone.

In the concern of hormone therapy used for the treatment of menopause symptoms, herbal medicine with estrogenic effect have been under intensive investigation, with an aim to find a natural ingredient with the similar effects as of those used in hormone therapy with no side effects.

The aim of estrogenic therapy is to relieve symptoms of sleep interruption, according to the study of health-related quality of life, fatigue, and hormone-related symptoms in breast cancer survivors, and menopausal symptoms, primarily hot flashes, affects approximately two-thirds of menopausal and postmenopausal women, botanicals and dietary supplement (BDS).

Beta-Sitosterol is a phytochemical in the class of Phytosterols, belongings to the group of Lipids, found abundantly in avocados, rice bran, wheat germ, corn oils, fennel, peanuts, soybeans, hawthorn, basil, buckwheat. etc.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the prevention and treatment of menopausal symptoms, researchers elucidated the effects of β-sitosterol and stigmasterol in the hydroalcoholic extract of Bambusa bambos as an alternative Hormone Replacement Therapy.

According to the results of the experiment
* The extract containing β-sitosterol and stigmasterol showed an estrogenic effect on the growth of MCF-7 cells in vitro.

* The tested extract showed no cytotoxicity to the to MCF-7 cells in any of the dilutions, but induced cell proliferation and all the dilutions except <500μg/ml have significantly increased cell multiplication.

* Furthermore, the doses of 15.6, 31.2, 62.5 and 125μg/ml of HEBB have shown influence on the proliferation rates similar to the standard 17β-estradiol.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "The results suggest that HEBB might be used as a safe alternative to estrogen replacement therapies".

Beta-Sitosterol may be considered a natural estrogenic remedy for the prevention and treatment of menopausal symptoms, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of beta-Sitosterol in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
