Turmeric Protects Chemo Patients Against the Hand-Foot Syndrome

By Kyle J. Norton

Hand-foot syndrome also known as palmar-plantar erythrodysesthesia is side effects in some patients undergoing cancer treatments.

Redness, swelling, and pain on the palms of the hands and/or the soles of the feet are some of the most common symptoms of hand-foot syndrome patients.

In severe cases, patients may also experience symptoms of cracked, flaking, or peeling skin, blisters, ulcers, or sores on the skin and difficulty walking or using your hands.

The leading cause of chemotherapy-induced hand and foot syndrome was attributed to damage the growth of skin cells or small blood vessels in the hands and feet once the drug including Capecitabine (Xeloda) Cytarabine (Cytosar-U) Docetaxel (Docefrez, Taxotere) Doxorubicin (Adriamycin) is circulating in the bloodstream.

Most cases of hand and foot syndromes occur in the first 6 weeks of chemo-target drug treatment. In some cases, the syndrome can occur in the 2nd to 3rd months after chemotherapy.

Conventionally, treatment of hand and foot syndrome by identifying the chemo drug that causes of the condition and focusing to reduce inflammation with the use of anti-inflammatory medication such as corticosteroids.

The experts in the chemo care suggested reducing friction and heat exposure to your hands and feet such as hot water, short showers, avoid increased pressure, on the soles of the feet or palms of hands, reducing exercise that affects the food and hand.and avoid any activity that causes excessive pressure and friction on the palms may reduce the severity of hand and foot syndrome.

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belongings to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

On findings, a potential compound for the treatment of complications in the first cycle of treatment in approximately 40% to 50% of patients who received capecitabine, researchers examined the efficacy of curcumin on hand-foot syndrome (HFS).

The study included 40 patients whose mean age was 62 years inclduing female (80%) with 52% had breast cancer, and 47.5% had GI tumors.

According to the analysis before and after treament of turmeric at a dose of 4 g/day (2 pills 12 hours apart) starting at the beginning of capecitabine treatment and lasting six weeks of the enrolled patients, 11 of 40 patients with capecitabine developed HFS whereas four patients developed HFS equal or superior to grade 2.

The inflammatory markers such as interleukin-6 (IL-6) showed no correlations in patients with HFS.

Co admiration of turmeric and capecitabine displays a lower rate of HFS, especially in grade 2 or higher.patients.

Taken altogether, turmeric may be considered supplements and adjunct therapy combined with conventional medicine for the prevention of hand and foot syndrome induced by capecitabine, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
