Omega 3 Fatty Acid Protects the Liver Against the Onset of Cirrhosis in Vivo

The liver is the largest internal organ found in the human which plays an essential role in filtering the blood from the digestive system before passing them to other parts of the body.

The liver also produces cholesterol, a waxy substance which aids digestion, builds cell membranes and produces vitamin D and steroid hormones.

Liver disease is a class of medical conditions characterized by the reduction partly or completely the function of the liver, including liver failure.

More precisely, the liver disease causes a reduced function in toxin elimination of liver as a result of damage or injury, caused by medication, viral infection...
Liver cirrhosis is a condition of abnormal function of the liver due to damage liver tissue replaced by scar tissue.

In other words, cirrhosis is an irreversible scarring liver as a result of liver tissue by fibrosis due to the final phase of chronic liver diseases that can lead to poor function of the liver and liver failure. 

According to the statistics, the number of discharges with chronic liver disease or cirrhosis as the first-listed diagnosis: 101,000 in 2009 and deaths per 100,000 population: 10.3 in 2010(a). Hepatitis B infection cause of the disease is very prevalent in South-East Asia.

According to statistics, the risk of liver cirrhosis is 1.6% in the adult population.

Most common risk factors associated with the onset of cirrhosis are
Risk factors
* Gender
Females who are chronic alcohol drinkers are at an increase to develop Cirrhosis.

* Diabetes mellitus (DM)
If you are diabetic, you are associated with an increased risk of cirrhosis. According to the study by the University Hospital, Monterrey, about 30% of patients with cirrhosis have diabetes mellitus (DM).

* Excessive alcohol drinking
People who drink abusively, in the most case died as a result of the progression of liver diseases.

* Medication-induced cirrhosis
Certain medications may cause an increased risk of cirrhosis to the takers, such as anti-tuberculosis

* Age
The risk of cirrhosis is increased with the progression of age.

* Obesity
The risk of cirrhosis is increased for obese people. In the study to evaluate the role of obesity.

* Heredity
Alpha-1-anti-trypsin deficiency is the most common genetic cause of liver disease in children.

* Toxins
Toxins can damage the liver.

Omega-3 fatty acids are phytochemicals in the class of lipids, found abundantly in deepsea fisk, dark-green leafy vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts, etc.

The three main components of Omega-3 fatty acids are alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of liver diseases, researchers examined the effect of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFA) on liver regeneration of rats with liver cirrhosis after hepatectomy.

According to the results of Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids intravenously injected in n-3 PUFA group 3 days before the operation to 1 day after partial hepatectomy,
* Liver regeneration was significantly delayed compared with PH group 7 days after hepatectomy (PH) in LC+PH group.

* Liver regeneration of LC+n-3 PUFA*+PH group increased significantly compared with LC+PH group 7 days after PH.

* In LC+PH group, liver cirrhotic was significantly higher compared with LC+n-3 PUFA+PH group 7 days after PH.

* Furthermore, liver cirrhosis of LC+n-3 PUFA*+PH group was significantly reduced compared with LC+n-3 PUFA+PH group 7 days after PH.

* More importantly, anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10 was increased and pro-inflammatory cytokine IL-6 was decreased in LC+n-3 PUFA*+PH group compared with LC+PH group.

Based on the findings, researchers said, " N-3 PUFA also suppressed increments in mRNA expression for transforming growth factor-β and up-regulated the expression of matrix metalloproteinase-9 and matrix metalloproteinase-1 in the liver".

Taken altogether, Omega-3 fatty acids may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of liver cirrhosis, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of Omega-3 fatty acids in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
