Lycopene Protects the Bone Density Against Osteoporosis (Osteoblastogenesis)

By Kyle J. Norton

Osteoblastogenesis are many factors associated with bone remodeling. In other words, osteoblastogenesis promotes an anabolic state (6 anabolic ingredients) of bone metabolism that protects the bone density against the bone reabsorption.

Osteoporosis is a chronic condition characterized by the thinning of bone and bone tissues due to the loss of bone density over time.

The condition is a widespread degenerative disease of skeletal joints and often associated with senescence invertebrates due to excessive or abnormal mechanical loading of weight-bearing joints, arising from heavy long-term use or specific injuries.

Patients with osteoporosis may experience symptoms of lower back pain, as a result of the fractured or collapsed vertebra, loss of height over time, a stooped posture, easy bone fracture, neck pain, and psychological symptoms of depression.

In women, osteoporosis may also induce psychosomatic, gastrointestinal and swelling and vasomotor symptoms, especially depressive symptom.

Most common complications of untreated osteoporosis are
* Bone fracture
Bone fracture is one of the most serious complications of osteoporosis, due to loss of bone mineral density. Even minimum mechanical stress can easily head for fracture.

* Chronic pain
Chronic pain is often induced poor quality of life in patients with osteoporosis, affecting daily living and functional status, in some cases, causing mental health, such as anxiety and depression to certain patients.

* Bone Deformity
Deformity, dysmorphism, or dysmorphic feature is a major abnormality in the shape..

Lycopene is a phytochemical in the class of carotenoid, a natural pigment with no vitamin A activity found abundantly in tomatoes and other red fruits and vegetables, such as red carrots, watermelons, and papayas,

Tomatoes provide about 80% of the lycopene in the world diet. In plants, lycopene protects the host against excessive photodamage and perform various functions in photosynthesis.

With an aim to find a potential phytochemical to protect the bone mineral density, researchers examined the bone metabolism of lycopene.

According to the tested differentiation
* Lycopene after the ingestion of lycopene-containing products such as tomato inhibited the bone oxidative-stress by enhancing the production of osteoblasts associated with the improvement of bone health

In other words, lycopene protected the bone density by inhibiting the bone reabsorption and increasing forming of new bone cells.

* Lycopene not only did not affect cell density/survival; but also protected the bone by decreasing the calcium-phosphate resorption.

* Lycopene also acted as NF-kB signaling inhibitors to inhibit osteoclast formation and bone resorptive activity against the bone formation.

Based on the findings, lycopene protects bone mineral density by stimulating osteoblastogenesis.

Researchers after taking into account of co and confounders said, "This information might be relevant for the prevention and delay in the progression of osteolytic bone conditions".

Taken altogether, lycopene found in tomato may be considered supplements for the promotion of osteoblastogenesis,  pending on the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of lycopene in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
