Kimchi (Fematneted Cabbage) Reduces the Risk of Colorectal Cancer

By Kyle J. Norton

Colorectum formed part of the secretory system including the large intestine and the rectum is the second part of the digestive system involved in the absorption of water from the small bowel contents and breaks down of certain materials in the feces into substances of which some of them to be reabsorbed and reused by the body.

The colon formed part of the large intestine plays a critical role in re-absorbing fluids and processing waste products from the body for elimination.

The colon consists of four parts: descending colon, ascending colon, transverse colon, and sigmoid colon

The rectum or the part of the large intestine nearest the rectum plays a temporary storehouse for feces.

Colorectal cancer is a medical condition caused by irregular cell growth in the tissue of the colon or rectum.

Most cases of colorectal cancer start in the cells on the surface of the inner lining in the colon and rectum, before penetrating into deeper layers to form a tumor through proliferation.

Colorectal cancer is relatively very common and slowly growing and progresses cancer in a predictable way.

The disease is more common in people over the age of 50. Regular colonoscopy after the age of 50 is valuable to detect the disease in the early stage, thereby increasing the rate of survival.

According to the statistics provided by the American Cancer Society, colorectal cancer, including cancer in the colon or rectum is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer and the second leading cause of cancer death in men and women combined in the United States.

In 2019, approximately 101,420 new cases of colon cancer and 44,180 new cases of rectal cancer will be diagnosed in the US.

The 5-year survival rate of colorectal cancer diagnosed at the localized stage is 90%. Sadly, only 39% of patients are diagnosed at this early stage.

Cabbage is a species of Brassica oleracea belongings to the family Brassicaceae (or Cruciferae), native to the Mediterranean region along the seacoast. The veggie has a short stem with a crowded mass of leaves, usually green but in some varieties, it may be red or purplish.

On findings a natural wholefood for the prevention of cancer, researchers examined the effects of commercial kimchi (CK), standardized kimchi (SK), cancer-preventive kimchi (CPK), and anticancer kimchi (ACK), on colorectal carcinogenesis in mice.

Male BALB/c mice induced colon cancer with a single intraperitoneal injection of azoxymethane (AOM, 10 mg/kg body weight) and subsequent treatment with 2% dextran sulfate sodium (DSS) in drinking water for 7 days for two cycles.

According to the experimental analysis.
* Treatment with the methanolic extracts from different kimchis, particularly 1.89 g/kg of ACK, significantly increased colon length, decreased the ratio of colon weight/length, and resulted in the lowest number of tumors compared with the other kimchi-treated groups.

In other words, the kimchi extract protected the colonic cells against the alternation of DNA.

* Injection of ACK was able to suppress AOM- and DSS-induced colonic mucosal damage and neoplasia.

* ACK also significantly decreased the mRNA levels of proinflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-6, and IFN-γ) as well as the mRNA and protein expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) to induce protein, lipid, and cell DNA damage.

* Mote importantly, kimchi extract enhanced the tumor-suppressive genes on AOM- and DSS-induced colorectal carcinogenesis in the BALB/c mice.

Based on the results, researchers wrote, " The anticancer effects of ACK were particularly potent. Thus, it is possible that the health-promoting sub-ingredients added to ACK might be used to prevent colon carcinogenesis in humans".

Taken altogether, cabbage may process anti colorectal activity, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
