Herbal Ashwagandha Inhibits the Onset of Atherosclerosis in Diabetics

By Kyle J. Norton

Atherosclerosis is a medical condition caused by plaques accumulated on the wall of the arteries, leading to narrowing the arteries in transporting oxygenated blood to the heart and other parts of the body.

Depending on the blood obstruction, atherosclerosis can induce different types of heart disease and stroke.

Plaque is the make of cholesterols, calcium, and other toxic substances, including cadmium.

Hyperlipidemia is a medical condition characterized by abnormally high levels of cholesterol in the bloodstream.

Overexpression of cholesterol levels in the bloodstream has been linked to plaques accumulation on the arterial walls, a major cause of some forms of heart disease and stroke.

Untreated high blood cholesterol has been found to induce serious complications including carotid artery disease, coronary heart disease, peripheral artery disease, and stroke.

Dr, Yagi K, at the Institute of Applied Biochemistry in the analysis of the lipid peroxides and human diseases, said, "The lipid peroxidation (LPO) products are highly reactive and display marked biological effects, which, depending upon their concentration, cause selective alterations in cell signaling, protein and DNA damage, and cytotoxicity"

And. "Increased formation of lipid peroxides and aldehydes has been observed in atherosclerosis, ischemia-reperfusion, heart failure, Alzheimer’s disease, rheumatic arthritis, cancer, and other immunological disorders".

Cholesterol is the type of fat produced by the liver or from fat intake playing a critical role in the building of strong cell walls, production of vitamin D and steroid hormones and bile acid to aid digestion in the small intestine.

Cholesterol produced by the liver in a healthy individual is returned to the liver by high-density lipoprotein (HDL).

The healthy ratio of HDL/LDL cholesterol is any numbers that are less than 1/4.

Ashwagandha also is known as Withania somnifera is a nightshade plant in the genus of Withania, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to the dry parts of India, North Africa, Middle East, and the Mediterranean.

The herbal medicine has been considered as Indian ginseng and used in Ayurvedic medicine over 3000 years to treat tumors and tubercular glands, carbuncles, memory loss, and ulcers and considered as anti-stress, cognition-facilitating, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging herbal medicine.

On finding a potent compound for the prevention and treatment of atherosclerosis, researchers at the Meerut Institute of Engineering and Technology, Meerut, India, examined the anti hyperlipidemia and hyperglycemic of an aqueous extract of Withania coagulans (AWC).

According to the atherogenic index (AI) on streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetes.treated by AWC (1,000 mg/kg body weight, BW), AWC not reduced plasma glucose levels but also showed a strong activity against levels of glucose in diabetic rats.

Furthermore, AWC at sub-chronic dosing, also exerted significantly decreasing plasma levels of CHL, HDL, and TG only in STZ-induced diabetic rats.

Moreover, in STZ-induced diabetic animals compared to normal rats, repeated administration of AWC also significantly decreased AI and prevented weight loss.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "AWC showed anti-hyperlipidemic activity in diabetic rats and was suggested to be a suitable candidate for the treatment of atherosclerosis associated with diabetes".
Taken altogether, Ashwagandha may be considered a functional herb for the treatment of atherosclerosis in diabetics, pending to the result of larger sample size and multicenter study.
