Angelica Sinensis Inhibits the Abnormally Proliferative Cardiac Fibroblasts

By Kyle J. Norton

The heart formed part of the circulatory system pumps blood through the blood vessels. The blood provided not only nutrients to cell metabolism but also remove waste during the process.

Heart disease is a class of diseases associated with blood vessels and the heart.

According to the statistics, heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women. Approximately, over 600,000 Americans die from heart disease each year or 1 in every 4 deaths are from heart disease.

A fibroblast associated with wound healing is a type of biological cell that produces collagen, and the structural framework (stroma) for body tissues.

Cardiac fibroblasts accompanied by myocytes, endothelial cells, and vascular smooth muscle cells are the permanent cellular constituents of the heart.

Cardiac fibroblasts play a critical role in the structure and function of the heart tissues involved in blood circulation to provide nutrients and fluids to the body daily functioning.

Normally, cardiac fibroblasts are activated by the immune system following injury with the function to repair and remodeling tissues of the heart.

Activation of cardiac fibroblasts for heart tissue healing during the post-infarction has been found to involve several processes in the transition to the proliferative phase of infarct healing, including the stimulation of inflammatory reaction, followed by rapid suppression of proinflammatory cytokines and subsequent resolution of the leukocytic infiltrate.

Any disruption of the process may cause forming heart scars and reduce the function of the heart tissue to perform its normal function, leading to many cardiac pathologic conditions, including hypertensive heart disease and aortic stenosis.

On finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases, scientists examined the effects of XueFuZhuYu Decoction (XFZYD) on collagen synthesis and proliferation of cardiac fibroblasts and provide academic bases of remedying kinds of heart disease aroused by the proliferation of cardiac fibroblasts.

Angelica or Dang Qui is a herb of Genus Angelica from the family Apiaceae, indigenous to China.

The herb has been used as a Queen herb in traditional Chinese medicine antispasmodic and vasodilatory agent, and to balance the hormones in women for a normal menstrual cycle and menstruation and strengthen heart, spleen, kidneys, and liver for both men and women, etc. In other words, it is used to treat gynecological ailments, fatigue, mild anemia, and high blood pressure. It has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, etc.

According to the results of the analysis,
* Compared with the control group, 1 g/ml XFZYD(dilution 1:80) and 10 percent serum of rat contained XFZYD could significantly inhibit the collagen synthesis and the proliferation of cardiac fibroblasts.

* Moreover, 1 g/ml XFZYD(dilution 1:80) could significantly affect collagen secretion of cardiac fibroblasts (P < 0.05), up to 17.9%.

In other words, XFZYD protects the heart connective tissue and muscles against the formation of fibroblasts induced by collagen secretion.

Based on the results, researchers suggest, "XFZYD could inhibit both proliferation and collagen secretion of cardiac fibroblasts. It could resist cardiac muscle fibrosis".

Taken altogether, angelica sinensis may be considered a remedy for the protection of the heart against cardiac fibroblasts, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
