Herbal Angelica Modulates the Immune Response In Vivo

By Kyle J. Norton

Immunomodulators are agents that have unique functions to modify the immune response or the functioning of the immune system such as the stimulation of antibody formation or the inhibition of abnormal white blood cell activity.

In other words, immunomodulation processed immunotherapy, in which immune responses are induced depending to the body needs.

The immune system is the set of cells and their activity against antigens or infectious agents that comprises the body's defense system against diseases.

The immune system does a great job of keeping people healthy and preventing infections.

Besides foods and nutritional supplements, herbs also play important roles in helping the immune system to defend against viruses and bacteria attacks.

A variety of factors have been found to trigger immune responses include pathogens, damaged cells, and toxic compounds.

The immune response is a natural reaction of the immune system to protect our body against the invasion of foreign substances.

Inflammation is a natural response of the immune system which protects the body against the invasion of pathogens.

In the acute phase of infection, the immune system initiated the production of proinflammatory Th1 cytokines in activated interleukin-12 (IL-12) and gamma interferon (IFN-γ) and other pro-inflammatory factors such as TNF beta in response to detect, engulf and destroy pathogens and apoptotic cells through macrophages.

These activities played an important in induced apoptosis and reduced proliferation of bacteria or viruses by attaching to the surface of the injured cells to initiation of an alternation. however, overproduction of pro-inflammatory expression may indeed cause substantial adverse effects in tissue destruction, and, in some cases, shock and death.

Type 1 T helper (Th1) in response to tissue damage and injure also activated macrophages that are responsible for cell-mediated immunity and phagocyte-dependent protective activity.

Angelica or Dang Qui is a herb of Genus Angelica from the family Apiaceae, indigenous to China.

The herb has been used as a Queen herb in traditional Chinese medicine antispasmodic and vasodilatory agent, and to balance the hormones in women for a normal menstrual cycle and menstruation and strengthen heart, spleen, kidneys, and liver for both men and women, etc. In other words, it is used to treat gynecological ailments, fatigue, mild anemia, and high blood pressure. It has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, etc.

On finding a potential compound for the modulation of the immune functioning, researchers examined the effects of Dangguibuxue Tang (DBT), including herbal angelica on the growth performance and immune response in immunosuppressed broiler chicks.

A total of 240 one-d-old broiler chicks (DaHeng S01)with 4 d to r7 d of age, in the study were randomly divided into 4 groups, 2.0% DBT-treatment (A), 0.5% DBT-treatment (B), cyclophosphamide-control (C), and control group (D) from 8 d to 42 d of age, after the tested chicks in groups A, B and C were also given cyclophosphamide (CY) at a dosage of 100mg/kg body weight (BW) daily by intraperitoneal injection to induce immunosuppression.

Furthermore, the Chicks in the control group D were given an equal volume of physiological saline daily by intraperitoneal injection.

The experimental results suggested that compared to cyclophosphamide-control (C), chicks from group B has a lower feed gain rate (FGR), lower total mortality, higher immunity organ indexes.

Additionally, also compared to group C, chick in group B also demonstrated a significantly higher antiviral and infectious (Newcastle disease (ND) and infectious bursal disease (IBD)) antibody.

Moreover, the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines induced by higher levels of interleukin-2 and interleukin-6 levels, and the response of greater lymphocyte proliferative responses to concanavalin A (ConAin) in the group B were also significantly lower compared to the group C.

In other words, Dangguibuxue Tang (DBT) displays strongly immune-modulatory effects regardless of the dose of herbal decode.

Based on the results, researchers said, "These results indicate that supplementation of 0.5% of DBT can improve both cellular immunity and humoral immunity in immunosuppressed broiler chicks".

Taken altogether, Herbal Angelica used alone or in the combination with other herbal medicines may be considered a function for improving immune response, pending to larger sample size and multicenter human study.
