Cruciferous vegetables Inhibit Oral Cancer in Vitro

Oral cancer is a medical condition characterized by irregular cell growth in the oral cavity. In the early stage, the abnormal cells only appear in the surface lining of the cavity. However, in the late stage, the infectious cells may travel a distance away from the original site to invade other cells and tissue.

Early diagnosed oral cancer may have a close to 100% recovery.

Most cases of oral cancer begin in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of oral tissue.

However, at the advanced stage, oral cancer cells can travel a distance away to infect other healthy tissue and organs, leading to secondary metastasis.

According to the statistic provided by the American Cancer Society, in 2018, approximately 51,540 people were diagnosed with oral cavity or oropharyngeal cancer. The disease causes the death of an estimated 10,030 people.

The 5-year survival rate of oral cancer is 66%, including all stages.

Family history, smoking, alcohol drinking, infection by the HPV virus, poor hygiene, and genetic preposition are some of the risk factors associated with the disease.

According to the cancer society, the 5 survival rate of oral cancer is about 60% plus without taking into consideration the stage of cancer.

On finding potential and natural foods for the prevention and treatment of cancer, researchers investigated the effect of sulforaphane, a predominant isothiocyanate in Brassica oleracea, a family of cruciferous vegetables on oral carcinoma cell lines.

According to the tested analysis. sulforaphane showed strong growth inhibition of oral carcinoma cell lines by blocking the cancer cell migration and invasion activities.

Based on the Multiplex protein analysis kits, the impairment of the migration and invasion induced by sulforaphane were attributed to associated with the anti-orchestration in the secretion of metalloprotease levels including MMP-1 and MMP-2.

In other words, sulforaphane demonstrated a therapeutic potency as an inhibitor of metastasis in oral carcinoma cell lines.

Taken altogether, cruciferous vegetables processed abundantly sulforaphane, may be considered functional remedies for the prevention of oral cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
