Cranberry Processes Immune-Modulatory Activity

By Kyle J. Norton

The immune system is the set of cells and their activity against antigens or infectious agents that comprise the body's defense system against diseases.

The immune system does a great job of keeping people healthy and preventing infections. Besides foods and nutritional supplements, herbs also play an important role in helping the immune system defend against viruses and bacteria attacks.

Active immunity may also be artificially acquired caused by the injection of the vaccine, a substance that contains antigen and passive immunity is an auto-response of the immune system against infection through the production of antigen.

Immunity can also be passive and active, Dr. David Baxter, in the article of "Active and passive immunity, vaccine types, excipients and licensing" wrote, "Active immunity refers to the process of exposing the body to an antigen to generate an adaptive immune response: the response takes days/weeks to develop but may be long-lasting—even lifelong" and " Passive immunity refers to the process of providing IgG antibodies to protect against infection; it gives immediate, but short-lived protection—several weeks to 3 or 4 months at most. Passive immunity is usually classified as natural or acquired".

However, an abnormal immune response such as overactive and underactive may cause a weakened immune system or autoimmune diseases.

Immunomodulatory activity is an action that improves the underactive immune function that is susceptible to the invasion of the foreign microorganism and inhibits the overactive immune system that causes autoimmune diseases.

In other words, the immunomodulatory activity is to modulate the genes involved in immune reactions, or of the neurohormonal system which regulates immune functions and any toxic or immunotoxic effects such as allergic reactions or destruction of immune effectors, that may cause harm to the body or interfere with the body normal function.

Cranberry is an evergreen dwarf shrub, genus Vaccinium, belongings to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern America and Southern Asia. Because of its health benefits, cranberry has been cultivated in some parts of the world for commercial profit and used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat wounds, urinary disorders, diarrhea, diabetes, stomach ailments, and liver problems.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of diseases associated with immune compromise, researchers investigated the immunomodulatory effect of KC-1317 (a symbiotic mixture containing Saccharomyces boulardii lysate in a cranberry, colostrum-derived lactoferrin, fragaria,

The human trial included healthy volunteers with years of age ranging from 65-79 years with low natural killer (NK) cell activity,

According to the differentiation, liquid C-1317 showed a strong improvement in NK cell activity.

In other words, the select remedy resulted in immune-modulatory effects on the treatment group, compared to placebo at the end of 2 months.

Based on the findings, researchers said, " Although preliminary, these beneficial immune-modulatory effects of KC-1317 in aged individuals might indicate its employment within a wider age-management strategy".

Taken altogether, cranberry combined with other herbal medicine may be considered immune-modulatory remedy, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
