Cramp Bark (Viburnum opulus) Exerts Cytoprotective Effects Against Colorectal Cancer in Vitro

Cancer is a group of medical and chronic diseases characterized by cell growth disorderly and uncontrollably in the tissue of specific organs in the body.

Over time, the alternative cells induced tumor may become progressively worse and damage other healthy tissues, depending on the grade of the tumor.

At the later stage, the most invasive tumor can induce secondary metastasis by spreading to other organs in the body via lymph or blood.

According to the National Cancer Institute, approximately 38.4% of men and women will be diagnosed with cancer at some points during their lifetimes, according to the data from 2013–2015.

In 2017, an estimated 15,270 children and adolescents ages 0 to 19 were diagnosed with cancer and 1,790 died of the disease.

Cramp Bark is an ornamental plant, genus Viburnum, belonging to the family Adoxaceae, native to Europe and Asia. It has been used in traditional and herbal medicine as anti-spasmodic, anti-inflammatory, nervine. hypotensive agent and to treat menstrual cramps and pain, afterbirth, postpartum pains, excessive blood loss in periods, bleeding associated with the menopause, etc.

On finding a potential herbal medicine for the prevention and treatment of cancer, researchers examined the effects of Cramp Bark(Viburnum opulus) extract cytoprotective activity on Caco-2 cell, the continuous line of heterogeneous human epithelial colorectal adenocarcinoma cells.

According to the tested analysis, the extract showed a strong anti-tumor property in modulating the cellular membrane dynamic in the progression of the cancer cells.

Furthermore, the application exerted a strong chemo-preventive activity against oxidative stress-induced chemically by tert-butyl hydroperoxide (t-BOOH).

Moreover, the antioxidants activity of the extract also inhibits DNA damage by initiating the  DNA self-repair after cell exposition to reactive oxygen species, methylnitronitrosoguanidine (MNNG) and H2O2.

Taken altogether, cramp bark(Viburnum opulus) may be considered a functional herb which processes cytoprotective activity, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
