Beta-Sitosterol Exerts a Neuro-Protective Effect in Vitro

By Kyle J. Norton

Cancer is a class of chronic diseases associated with irregular cell growth in the tissues of the affected organ.

Brain and spinal cord make up the nervous system. Brain and Spinal Cord tumors originated are not very common.

The function of the brain process a complex function, including control of our thoughts, memory, and speech, movement of the arms and legs,...

Brain cancer is a medical and chronic condition characterized by cell growth disorderly in the brain tissue.

Benign tumors are noncancerous, and malignant tumors are cancerous. More than 190.000 people in the US are diagnosed with a brain tumor each year alone.

A neuron is a nerve cell that forms a building block of the nervous system.

Neuroblastoma is cancer developed by the immature nerve cells found in several areas of the body, mostly in and around the adrenal glands.

Cancer most commonly affects children age 5 or younger compared to less often in older children.

According to the statistics provided by the Cancer Net, approximately 800 children are diagnosed with neuroblastoma in the United States.

And 90% of children affected by neuroblastoma are children younger than 5.

Sadly, the the-5-year survival rate of cancer is less than 50%.

The most common symptoms are totally depending on the area that has been affected including back pain, fever, unexplained weight loss, and bone pain.

Beta-Sitosterol is a phytochemical in the class of Phytosterols, belongings to the group of Lipids, found abundantly in avocados, rice bran, wheat germ, corn oils, fennel, peanuts, soybeans, hawthorn, basil, buckwheat. etc.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the prevention and treatment of brain cancer, researchers evaluated the neuroprotective effects and action mechanism of Cirsium setidens (CSEA) and Aster scaber (ASEA) against H2O2-induced cell death of human brain neuroblastoma SK-N-SH cells.

According to the experimental and chemical analysis,
*The major phytochemicals isolated from CSEA and ASEA were found to be β-sitosterol, Dau, Pec, Ast, or isoquercitrin.

* Ethyl acetate fractions from Cirsium setidens (CSEA) and Aster scaber (ASEA) showed neuroprotective effects in SK-N-SH cells.

* Compared to β-sitosterol, pretreatment with Dau, Pec, or Ast showed protective effects against H2O2-induced cell death and inhibited ROS generation by oxidative stress to induce brain cell apoptosis.

In other words, all chemical compounds found in Cirsium setidens (CSEA) and Aster scaber (ASEA) work synergistically by inducing overexpression of free radicals to exert cytotoxicity against the tested cells.

Taken altogether, beta-Sitosterol used in a combination with other chemical compounds may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of brain cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of beta-Sitosterol in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
