Herbal Coltsfoot(Tussilago farfara) Induces Expectorant Effect in Vivo

By Kyle J. Norton

An expectorant effect is a function that helps to cough up loosen mucus by increasing the water content.

Coughing is a natural reflex that clears the throat of mucus or foreign pathogens.
In other words,  frequent coughing may be a condition of infection caused by inflammation of the airway.

An acute cough is short-term coughing that lasts for less than three weeks. Chronic coughing that lasts more than 3 weeks may be a condition of respiratory diseases, including asthma, allergies, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), or bronchitis.

Phlegm produced in the lungs and lower respiratory tract is a type of mucus found mostly in acutely sick or longstanding health conditions patients.

Chronic mucus collected in the lungs has been associated with patients with tuberculosis (TB), pneumonia, a fungal infection, whooping cough early in life and measles.

Seriously, chronic mucus collected in the lungs increases a significant risk of further infections and more damage.

Coltsfoot(Tussilago farfara) is a perennial herbaceous plant, genus Tussilago, belonging to the family Asteraceae, native to Europe and Asia. The herb has been used over thousands of years to treat asthma, various coughs, bronchial congestion, respiratory disorders, headaches and obstruction in the nasal passage, etc.

The Modern Research Center for Traditional Chinese Medicine of Shanxi University, the expectorant effect of Tussilagone (TSL), isolated from the flower of buds of Tussilago farfara (Compositae) examined the water extracts orally from flower bud and rachis that administrated to tested mice.

Mice selected to the study induced coughing by Ammonia showed a strong effect on significantly lengthened the latent period of cough, decreased cough frequency.

Furthermore, in expectorant evaluation, the phenolic compounds, organic acid, sugar, amino acid, terpene, and sterol were found to be the major contribution in enhancing tracheal phenol red output.

Additionally, in chemical analysis, the high concentration of chlorogenic acid, 3,5-dicaffeoylquinic acid, rutin in flower buds showed a significant antitussive and expectorant effects of Flos Farfara compared to flower rachis.

Dr. Li ZY, the lead scientist said, "These findings provide pharmacological and chemical evidence that only flower bud can be used as the antitussive and expectorant herbal drug".

Taken altogether, coltsfoot may be considered a remedy for loosening mucus, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
