Healthy Turmeric Blocks the Proliferation of Endometrial Cancer Cells

By Kyle J. Norton

Cancer is a group of the chronic disease characterized by cells growth disorderly and uncontrollably in the body tissue of the specific organ.

Over time, after growing in size through unlimited division, the tumor can spread to other tissues and organs in the body via lymph or blood.

Endometrium, the inner lining of women uterus is very susceptible to hormone change, particularly in the stages of the menstrual cycle.

Endometrial cancer is a late adulthood cancer that starts in the cells on the surface of the endometrial inner lining of the uterus caused by the alternation of cells DNA. Endometrial cancer is the fourth most common cancer among women overall, after breast cancer, lung cancer, and bowel cancer.

In the US, according to statistics, the average age of women diagnosed with endometrial cancer is 60. Endometrial is cancer is more common in white women, but black women diagnosed with endometrial cancer are more likely to die from it.

There are more than 600,000 women are endometrial cancer survivors in the US today. In 2019, approximately 61,880 new cases of cancer the uterus (uterine body or corpus) will be diagnosed and this cancer will cause the death of 12,160 women.

Accompanied by the general symptoms shared by other types of cancer, most common symptoms of endometrial cancer are
* Abnormal vaginal bleeding
Vaginal bleeding between period within inappropriate amounts of blood flow should be checked with the doctor as soon as possible. The symptom may be caused by the expansion of overgrowth of pre-cancer uterine lining cells due to infection or breaking off the endometrial capillaries or blood vessels.

* Increase amount of vaginal discharge
An increase in the amount of vaginal discharge accompanied by abnormal odor or pain, itching, or burning sensation may be caused by infection or inflammation.

* Painful urination
Painful urination, most of the time is caused by infection of the urinary tract that affects the bladder in emptying, but sometimes it can be caused by infectious diseases.

* Pain during sex
Painful during most of the time is caused by vestibulitis and vaginismus sex, but in some cases, it can be caused by cancer or other reproductive diseases.

* Pain in the abdomen
There are many reproductive diseases can cause pain in the pelvis, such as appendicitis, salpingitis, uterine descensus,.. but it can be caused by the early stage of endometrial cancer.

* Swelling or lump in the pelvis
Swelling can be caused by inflammation of sexual transmitting virus or infection by bacteria. The lump may be caused by abnormal cells growth of the uterine lining or reproductive tissue.

*Anemia
Anemia may be caused by chronic loss of blood due to prolonged or heavy abnormal menstrual bleeding.

If you have some of the aforementioned symptoms, please check with your doctor to rule out the possibility.

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and for the treatment of flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

On finding a potential ingredient for the treatment of endometrial cancer, researchers examined the anti-metastatic effect and molecular mechanism of curcumin in endometrial carcinoma (ECd ) of curcumin isolated from turmeric.

According to the assays carried out in EC cell lines,
*In vitro, curcumin inhibited EC cell migration and invasion.

* Curcumin treatment for 24 hours, decreased the expression levels of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-2 and -9 associated with cancer cell proliferation and survival.

* Futhermore curcumin for 24 hours treatment also inhibited the protease activities associated with metastatic potential in EC cell lines.

* Curcumin treatment exerted anti-metastatic effects by blocking the overexpression of pathways involved in cancer cell growth.

* Moreover, combined with chemo drug ERK inhibitor U0126, curcumin works synergistically against enzymes associated with tumors proliferation, particularly, in the inhibition of the invasive capabilities of HEC-1B cells.

More precisely, curcumin inhibits tumor cell migration and invasion by reducing the expression and activity of MMP-2/9 associated with tumors proliferation via the suppression of the ERK signaling pathway in stimulating cancer cell growth.

Based on the finding and after taking other factors into account, Dr. QIAN CHEN, the lead scientist wrote in the final report, "curcumin is a potential therapeutic agent for EC".

Taken altogether, turmeric processed abundantly bioactive compound curcumin may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of endometrial cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
