Cabbage Preserves the Mitochondrial Function Against Oxidative Stress

Mitochondria are the cell that converts the food molecules into the energy for the body tissues' needs. Mitochondria produce 90 percent of the energy for the body function.

Mitochondrial dysfunction is a condition affecting the organelles that generate energy for the cell.

Genetically, the genetic proposition has been found to alter the process of mitochondria in converting oxygen and food to energy in some people.

Acquired mitochondrial dysfunction caused by the long-term use of certain medications such as Metformin, medical conditions such as mitochondrial encephalomyopathy or infection and environmental influences, such as xenochemicals, leading to less and less energy generated within the cells.
Acquired mitochondrial dysfunction has been found in patients with Alzheimer’s disease, muscular dystrophy, Lou Gehrig’s disease, diabetes, and cancer.

Most common symptoms of mitochondrial dysfunction include poor growth, muscle weakness, muscle pain, low muscle tone, exercise intolerance, vision and/or hearing problems
learning disabilities, delays in development, mental retardation depending on the location of the infected cells.

Diseases associated with mitochondrial dysfunction include Autism, autism-like features Heart, liver or kidney diseases, seizures, strokes, severe developmental delays, inability to walk, and dementia.

Conventionally, treatments of mitochondrial dysfunction are totally depending on the causes of the disease.

Dr. Sreenivas Avula, the lead scientist wrote, "Classification of therapies for mitochondrial disorders has evolved from the empirical therapies targeting residual respiratory chain to acting at the molecular level to alter the expression of mutated mtDNA genes within the cell nucleus".

And,  " ...in the future, treatment strategies may employ a combination of pharmacological treatments that have undergone rigorous clinical trials targeting OXPHOS, as well as newer strategies at the molecular level".

Cabbage is a species of Brassica oleracea belongings to the family Brassicaceae (or Cruciferae), native to the Mediterranean region along the seacoast. The veggie has a short stem of which is crowded a mass of leaves, usually green but in some varieties, it may be red or purplish.
With an aim to find a natural food for the prevention of oxidative stress in the progression of cardiac diseases, researchers examined the effect of cabbage extract on mitochondrial dysfunction in H9c2 cardiomyoblasts.

According to the tested differentiation, the administration of cabbage extract protected the mitochondria against H2O2-induced cell death without eliciting the cytotoxic effects.

Furthermore, cabbage extract enhanced the expression of antioxidant proteins (SOD-1, catalase, and GPx) against ROS production.

Moreover, the extracts also stimulating the protein associated with cell survival by inhibiting apoptotic responses in oxidative stress-exposed H9c2 cells.

More precisely, cabbage extract preserved mitochondrial functions upon oxidative stress. 

Based on the results, researchers wrote, "These findings reveal that cabbage extract protects against oxidative stress and suggest that it can be used as an alternative therapeutic strategy to prevent the oxidative stress in the heart".

Taken altogether, cabbage processed abundantly SFN may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of mitochondrial dysfunction in the initiation of heart disease, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of SFN in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
