Herbal Turmeric Destroys Oral Cancer Cells in Vitro

By Kyle J. Norton

The stomach that secretes acid and enzymes to digest food is a muscular organ located on the left side of the upper abdomen.

Foods that reach the end of the esophagus enters the stomach through a muscular valve called the lower esophageal sphincter.

Stomach not only forms part of the digestive system, but it also is the first organ to digest foods.

Oral/ Stomach cancer is a group of cancer characterized by malignant cell growth in the tissue located in the oral cavity, including the tissue of the lips or the tongue, cheek lining, floor of the mouth, gums (gingiva) and the roof of the mouth (palate).

According to worldwide statistics, oral cancer is the 11th most common malignancy in the world. There is a global trend of a slight decrease in the incidence of oral cancer, except tongue cancer.

In the US, 53,000 Americans will be diagnosed with oral or oropharyngeal cancer in 2019. Oral cancer also will cause the death of over 9,750 Americans.

Patients with oral cancer depending on the stage and grade may experience general symptoms shared by other types of cancer such as unintended weight loss of over 10%, loss of appetite, persistent fatigue and nausea and vomiting accompanied by
* Poorly healing mouth ulcer
Poorly healing mouth ulcer indicates something wrong within the cells and can be cancerous if left untreated for a prolonged period of time.

*A sore that does not heal on the lip or in the mouth
If the ulcer does not heal with 2 weeks, it may be a sign of abnormal cell growth or tumor.

* A lump or thickening in the oral cavity
Due to cell growth irregularity.

* Patches that are white or red (or both) inside the mouth or on the lips
Maybe due to infection or inflammation.

* Loose teeth
Maybe due to inflammation of gingivitis

*Dentures that not fit well
It increases the risk of infection and gum damage.

* Problems speaking clearly

* A lump in the neck
Cancer has spread to the lymph nodes in the neck region.

If you have some of the aforementioned symptoms, please check with your doctor to rule out the oral cancer possibility.

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

On finding a potential ingredient for the treatment of oral cancer associated with squamous cells, researchers examined the effect of curcumin on oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC).

According to the tested differentiation, the expression levels of miR-9 were significantly lower in clinical OSCC specimens compared to non-tumor tissues.

Where miR-9 is a microRNA involved in cancer cell arrest and apoptosis.

Administration of curcumin inhibited OSCC cells (SCC-9 cells) proliferation by exhibiting the miR-9 expression and suppressing Wnt/β-catenin signaling associated with the promotion of cancer progression by regulating the tumor-immune cycle.

Additional analysis of the interaction of signaling pathways suggested that the mechanisms that regulate the gene expression such as GSK-3β, phosphorylated GSK-3β and β-catenin associated with the inhibition of Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway were also increased by the application of curcumin.

Furthermore, Cyclin D1 involved in the promotion of cell cycle progression in the tested cell line was also decreased by curcumin injection.

In Micro RNA analysis, reduced expression of miR-9 by anti-miR-9 not only attenuated the growth-suppressive effects of curcumin on SCC-9 cells but also re-activated Wnt/β-catenin signaling that was inhibited by curcumin.

In other words, curcumin inhibited the initiation and progression of oral cancer cells by increasing the expression of miR-9 that causes cancer cell arrest and apoptosis.

Taken altogether, turmeric processed abundantly bioactive compound curcumin may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of oral cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
