Turmeric Protects the Liver cells Damage Against the Risk of Liver Disease

By Kyle J. Norton

Liver formed part of the detoxed organs in the human body is the largest internal organ that filters the blood from the digestive tract, before passing them to the rest of the body.

The liver also plays an essential role to produce cholesterol to build a strong cell wall, produce steroid hormones and vitamin D and aid the digestive function in food absorption and detoxify toxic chemicals and metabolizes drugs.

Liver disease is a process of reduced function of the liver acutely or gradually.

Liver cancer is a chronic liver disease associated with irregular cell growth that starts in the cells on the surface of the liver inner lining tissue, before penetrating into deeper layers to form tumor through cell proliferation.

At the advanced stage, the cancerous cell in the primary liver cancer can travel a distance away to infect other nearby healthy tissue or organ, via blood and fluid circulation, leading to secondary metastasis.

Liver cancer remains the fifth most common malignancy in men and the eighth in women worldwide.
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a common form of primary liver cancer.

According to the Canadian Liver Foundation, approximately one in ten Canadians, or more than 3 million people in Canada has some form of liver disease,

Believe it or not, 95% of deaths from liver disease are due to chronic hepatitis B and C, alcoholic liver disease, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, and liver cancer, including 25% of obese patients.

Most common signs and symptoms of liver disease are jaundice, abdominal pain, and swelling in the legs and ankles, itchy skin, dark urine color, pale stool color, or bloody or tar-colored stool and tendency to bruise easily.

If you have experienced some of the aforementioned symptoms that do not heal in a short period of time, please check with your doctor to rule out the possibility.

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and for the treatment of flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

On finding a potent compound for the prevention of liver disease, researchers examined the liver protective effect of curcumin.

Curcumin showed a strong antioxidant activity that protects the liver against several mechanisms involved in hepatotoxicity, leading to cell membrane disruption, and initiation of the immune response.

Furthermore, the bioactive ingredient also improved the cellular pathways of drug metabolism and inhibited the accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) that cause liver damage.

Lipid peroxidation that leads to cell death caused by overexpression of free radicals in facilitating the chain reaction has also blocked the presence of curcumin.

Moreover, in various protocols of hepatotoxicity such as acetaminophen, alcohol, lindane, carbon tetrachloride (CCL4), diethylnitrosamine and heavy metals induced hepatotoxicities, injection of curcumin also showed significant efficacy in protecting the liver against damage, observed by reduced liver stress markers.

These results strongly suggested that curcumin is strong anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory effects and thus it possesses hepatoprotective properties.

Collectively, researchers wrote, "the hepatoprotective effects of curcumin with a focus on its mechanistic insights in various hepatotoxic protocols".

Taken altogether, turmeric processed abundantly bioactive compound curcumin may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of liver disease, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
