Navy Bean in the Prevention and Treatment of Chronic Diseases

Chronic diseases are a class of condition that last longers than 3 months, leading to long-term symptoms, physical impairments, disabilities.

Most cases of chronic diseases are associated with low-grade inflammation, including arthritis, asthma, cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, diabetes and some viral diseases such as hepatitis C and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome.

Inflammation is a natural reaction to a systematic immune response which protects our body against the stimuli of invasive pathogens by stimulating the production of the pro-inflammatory cytokines and switching the anti-inflammatory activity of proteins which process duel inflammatory property

Acute inflammation is a result of the immune white blood cell response to tissue damage or injury that lasts less than a few days or weeks. After the foreign invaders are destroyed, the damaged tissues are healed quickly.

Unlike acute inflammation, chronic inflammation is a condition of low-grade inflammation adopted by the immunity caused by the immune inability to kill off all invaders in the acute phase of infection.

In the examined the immune evolution over thousands of year Some researchers suggested that the immune system has evolved to destroy the foreigner pathogens in specific time within 3 -8 weeks, otherwise, it will adapt to the change.

The causes of chronic diseases are vary depending on the types of disease. However, epidemiological studies suggested that primary factors that cause chronic conditions are an unhealthy diet, physical inactivity; tobacco use and the intermediate factors of high blood pressure, glucose levels, and blood lipids, overweight, and obesity are also elevating the risk of chronic diseases. 

The small, white navy bean, also called pea bean or haricot, popular in both dry and green forms, is very popular in Britain and the US, native to Peru. It is now grown and consumed across the world, due to their numerous health benefits.

With an aim to find a potential compound for the prevention and treatment of chronic disease, researchers examined the effects of Consumption of Phaseolus vulgaris bean species including, navy beans.

Epidemiologically,
* Navy beans reduce postprandial glucose elevations in short-term studies in non-diabetic and diabetic individuals.

* Navy bean exerted glycaemic control in non-diabetic and diabetic individuals by improving markers of longer-term glycaemic control (HbA1c and fructosamine).

* Navy bean exerted a beneficial effect on short-term satiety and weight loss when combined with energy restriction.

* Navy bean decreased LDL-cholesterol, a well-known risk factor for CVD in normocholesterolaemic and hypercholesterolaemic participants

* Navy beans also reduced the oxidative stress, endothelium-dependent vasodilation, and increased blood pressure associated with increased risk for T2DM, complications of T2DM and CVD.

* Navy bean modulated hormone expression associated with hyperinsulinemia in increasing cancer risk.

Finally, The mechanism of action responsible for the reducing risk chronic disease may be involved in the high content of viscous fiber, protein, relatively high amylose starch, and antinutrients found in navy bean and other Phaseolus vulgaris bean species. 

Based on the findings, researchers concluded, "Traditional foods such as beans should be retained in the diet because of their many health benefits, including a positive impact on postprandial glycaemic response. Hyperglycaemia, whether it occurs following a meal or due to poorly controlled T2DM, is known to increase oxidative stress, contribute to hypertension and increase the risk for CVD".

And "Examination of the glycaemic response to meals, especially culturally important food combinations such as beans and rice, is important for the prevention and control of hyperglycemia-induced diseases".

Taken altogether, the fermented navy bean may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of chronic diseases, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
