Herbal Ginger, the Best Chemo Preventive Functional Food

Scientists may have found a natural ingredient which processed chemopreventive effects, with no side effects, according to study.

Chemoprevention is a general term used to describe the use of nontoxic natural chemicals and supplements for the treatment of cancer without inducing side effects.

The subjects of chemoprevention have under intensive studies over the last many years due to the side effects of chemo drugs. Natural chemopreventive agents have emerged as a promising and pragmatic medical approach to reduce the risk of cancer.

Most natural chemical compounds have been found to process the activity similar to those of conventional medicines for the treatment of cancer such as antioxidative, anti-inflammatory activity, induction of phase II enzymes, apoptosis, and cell cycle arrest.

For example:
Curcumin found in turmeric in animal models has been shown to protect against skin, oral, intestinal, and colon carcinogenesis and also to suppress angiogenesis and metastasis.

Furthermore, the administration also found that the chemical compound process the ability to cancer proliferation by cell cycle arrest, induced apoptosis and activated the phase carcinogen-detoxifying enzymes.

Moreover, curcumin has a capability to inhibit carcinogen bioactivation via suppression of specific cytochrome P450 isozymes associated with the biotransformation of medication that causes drug toxicities, reduced pharmacological effect, and adverse drug reactions.

Dr. Pan MH the lead scientist in the cancer team at the National Kaohsiung Marine University wrote,  "Many mechanisms have been shown to account for the anticarcinogenic actions of natural dietary compounds; attention has recently been focused on intracellular-signaling cascades as common molecular targets for various chemopreventive natural dietary compounds".

And, "In this critical review, we will summarize current knowledge on natural dietary compounds that act through the signaling pathways and modulate gene expression to induce detoxifying enzymes, programmed cell death, anti-inflammatory, and anti-proliferative effects, thus providing evidence for these substances in cancer chemopreventive action".

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) or ginger root, the second superfood used for thousands of years by mankind, is the genus Zingiber, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil.

The root has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine for the treatment of dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.

With an aim to find a natural ingredient which processes chemopreventive effects with no side effects, researchers examined the ginger effect on cancer prevention.

Ginger exerted a significant activity against cancer onset through several mechanisms, including free radical scavenging, antioxidant pathways, alteration of gene expressions, and induction of apoptosis.

Ginger protects the integrity and viability of the cell by decreasing tumor initiation, promotion, and progression.

Dr. Baliga MS, the lead scientist,. after taking other factors into accounts wrote, "The above-mentioned mechanisms of ginger seem to be promising for cancer prevention; however, further clinical studies are warranted to assess the efficacy and safety of ginger".

In order to reveal more information about the ginger anticancer activity, researchers evaluated the effects of  [6]-gingerol aspirinate (GAS) against colorectal cancers.

GAS exerts enhanced anti-cancer properties in vitro and superior gastroprotective effects in mice by inhibiting the protein associated with the production of proinflammatory cytokines.

More importantly, GAS was also able to survive stomach acid and decomposed in intestinal linings or after absorption to simultaneously release of [6]-gingerol. 

Dr. Zhu Y, the lead researcher said, "Our results demonstrate the enhanced anticancer properties along with gastroprotective effects of GAS, suggesting that GAS can be a therapeutic equivalent for ASA in inflammatory and proliferative diseases without the deleterious effects on stomach mucosa".


Take all together, ginger processed high amounts of the bioactive compound may be considered a functional alternative for chemoprevention, pending to the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.
