Herbal Turmeric Protects The Blood Cell Against Acute Monocytic Leukemia

By Kyle J. Norton

Leukemia is a condition characterized by an abnormal increase of white blood cells produced by the bone marrow and/or the lymphatic system. Depending to the malignant granulocytes or lymphocytes, leukemia is classified into myelogenous or lymphoblastic leukemia.

Bone marrow is soft tissue inside the hollow center of the major bone, including spine, pelvis, underarm, leg. etc.

Acute leukemia is a condition caused by a rapid increase in the numbers of extreme immature white blood cells which appear in the bloodstream into other parts of the body, including tissue and organs, Acute leukemia can also be classified into
* Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL)
Acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) is a type of cancer of the abnormal growth of extreme immature lymphocytes overproduced by the bone marrow and/or lymphatic system. The condition has a tendency to multiply quickly, leading to the death to normal white blood cells in the bone marrow and/or lymphatic system.

In ALL, lymphocytes appear immature in the bloodstream. Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is the most common children forms of leukemia with about 80% of all cases.

* Acute myeloid leukemia (AML)
Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a cancer of myelogenous lining caused by the rapid growth of abnormal granulocytes accumulated in the bone marrow, interfering with the normal blood cells. In AML, granulocytes appear immature in the bloodstream.

Acute monocytic leukemia (AML-M5) is one of the most common types of AML in young children < 2 years.

According to the statistics, acute monocytic leukemia comprises 3 - 6% of cases of AML with the male to female ratio is 1.8 to 1.0.

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

In the urgency to find a natural compound for the treatment of acute monocytic leukemia AML M5, one of the most common types of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) in children researchers examined the potency of the extracts from lesser galangal, turmeric, and ginger against AML M5.

The aqueous and organic solvent extracts from the leaves and rhizomes of lesser galangal and turmeric, and from the rhizomes of ginger showed significantly antiproliferative activities against THP-1 AMoL cells in vitro examined by the reduced numbers of the positive cells.

Compared to the lesser galangal leaf extracts in organic solvents of methanol, chloroform, and dichloromethane, turmeric leaf and rhizome extracts and ginger rhizome extracts in methanol showed distinctive anticancer activities.

The analyzing the chemical compound of the lesser galangal leaf methanol extract found 18 fractions using reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography with the fractions 9 and 16, respectively, showed the greatest antiproliferative activities.

Based on the results, researchers wrote in the final report, "plant extracts might be a safer approach to finding a lasting cure for AMoL".

Taken altogether, turmeric used alone or combined with other herbal medicines may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of acute monocytic leukemia, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
