Healthy Legume Navy Bean Alters Blood Lipid Metabolism Against the Risk of Cardiovascular Disease

By Kyle J. Norton

Lipids are fats synthesized by the liver dietary intake. Overexpression of triglycerides (TGs) and cholesterol have been found to cause diseases, although all lipids are physiologically important.

Cholesterol in moderate amounts plays a critical role in building strong cell membranes, producing vitamin D and steroid hormones and improving digestive functioning.

However, overexpression of "bad" cholesterol (low-density lipoprotein, LDL) and reduced levels of "good" cholesterol (high-density lipoprotein, HLD)  can cause high levels of cholesterol in the blood, leading to the increased risk of cardiovascular disease.

Lipid metabolism is the process to break down triglycerides into smaller chain fatty acids and subsequently into monoglyceride molecules through many steps of mechanisms, including
pancreatic enzymes and hormone cholecystokinin (CCK).

Lipid dysmetabolism that affects the function to deliver fatty acids to the apical membrane of enterocytes (intestinal absorptive cells) for absorption is associated with a number of medical conditions which has been found to cause chronic diseases including cardiovascular disease in type 2 diabetes, Crohn’s disease, Systemic autoimmune diseases, and obesity

The small, white navy bean, also called pea bean or haricot, popular in both dry and green forms, is very popular in Britain and the US, native to Peru. It is now grown and consumed across the world, due to their numerous health benefits.

With an aim to find potential ingredients for the prevention of cardio complications, researchers examined the effects of navy beans and rice bran on plasma metabolome or plasma of metabolites in children.

The pilot, randomized-controlled, clinical trial included 38 children (10 ± 0.8 years old) with abnormal cholesterol consumed a snack for 4 weeks containing either with navy bean or rice bran (control) including 17.5 g/day cooked navy bean powder; 15 g/day heat-stabilized rice bran; or 9 g/day navy beans and 8 g/day rice bran.

According to the tested assays, navy bean and/or rice bran consumption influenced 71 plasma compounds compared to control (p ≤ 0.05), with lipids representing 46% of the total plasma of metabolites.

Furthermore, the navy bean group exerted significant changes of 18 plasma lipids compared to 10 plasma lipids in the rice bran group and compared to control.

Compared to the baseline, navy beans group showed a change of 48 lipids in the navy bean group and compared to 40 in the rice bran group, compared to the baseline.

These results strongly suggested that navy bean influences the change of blood lipid metabolism that has strong implications for reducing CVD risk in children.

Moreover, researchers found the efficacy of anti-cardiovascular disease of the navy beam may be attributed to its chemical compounds in decreasing free fatty acids associated with metabolic diseases (palmitate and arachidonate) and increased the relative abundance of endogenous anti-inflammatory lipids (endocannabinoids, N-linoleoylglycine, 12,13-diHOME).

Taken altogether, the fermented navy bean may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease,  pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
