Whole Food Tomato Promotes the Lung Function in Human Trials

By Kyle J. Norton

The lung formed part of the circulatory system plays an essential and unique role in taking oxygen to the blood and exhaling carbon dioxide from the blood.

Additonally, the lung also processes other ability in protecting our body against disease, including
* By balancing the pH levels, the lung protects the body against the accumulation of too much carbon dioxide. High levels of carbon dioxide are known to induce acidity in the body.

* By removing small blood clots the lung protects the body against the forming air embolisms.

* The air flow produced by the lung also help us to speak.

* The lung also protects the infection through the secretion of immunoglobulin A.

Any part of the lung injury can reduce the lung function, leading to either obstructive or restrictive lung diseases or mixed lung disease, depending on a person's breathing.
* Obstructive lung diseases are the condition in which the lungs are unable to expel air properly during exhalation. Diseases associated with obstruction lung diseases are asthma, bronchiectasis, COPD, and emphysema.

* Restrictive lung diseases are a condition of decreased lung capacity or volume. Diseases associated with restrictive lung diseases include idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. Sarcoidosis, an autoimmune disease.

* Mixed lung diseases are most common in people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Tomato is red, edible fruit, genus Solanum, belonging to family Solanaceae, native to South America. Because of its health benefits, the tomato is grown worldwide for the commercial purpose
and often in the greenhouse.

With an aim to find a natural and potential remedy for the improvement of lung function, researchers examined the tomato intake on the relationship between lung function decline and dietary antioxidants over 10 years in adults from three European countries.

According to the questionnaire and underwent spirometry (forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1) and forced vital capacity (FVC)), there is an association between annual lung function decline (mL) and diet (tertiles).
In other words, tomato intake was also associated with a slower decline in FVC (4.5 mL·year-1; 95% CI 1.28, 8.02).

Compared to those of banana and apple intake, only tomato intake remained statistically significant after the Simes' procedure was performed

Intake of tomatoes also found to delay lung function decline in adults, particularly in ex-smokers.

Additionally, in patients with allergic rhinitis.associated with abnormal airway function such as an obstruction in large or small airways and increased bronchial reactivity, researchers investigated the oral administration of TE (360 mg per day) or placebo for 8 weeks.

According to the tested assays, sneezing score significantly decreased in the TE group at the end of the trial compared to the baseline.

TE group also showed a declined tendencies of rhinorrhea and nasal obstruction.

Compared to the placebo group, the TE group improved the patients' quality of life significantly after 8 weeks of treatment (P < 0.05).

In other words, TE promoted lung function by improving significantly total symptom scores, combining sneezing, rhinorrhea and nasal obstruction.

Taken altogether, tomatoes may be considered supplements for the improvement of lung function, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
