Honey, the Best Remedy for the Prevention and Treatment of Reflux Esophagitis

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a natural alternative for the treatment of reflux esophagitis, some studies found.

Acid Reflux or heartburn is a condition characterized by the going back up of acidic stomach contents to the esophagus. Most cases of acid reflux are happened immediately after eating causing a burning sensation or pain in the lower chest area.

According to the statistics, in the US, approximately, 20% of people with acid reflux will develop gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). More than 65% of people who suffer from acid reflux are 40 years old or older. And, 15 to 30 5 of the U.S. population has GERD.

Too much tea, coffee, and alcohol smoking pregnancy, obesity, eating habits such as eating close to bedtime, eating a large meal, eating fatty and fried foods are some of the risk factors that initiate to the early onset of acid reflux, according to the epidemiological studies.

Believe it or not, long-term intake of certain medication such as bronchodilators for asthma, progestin for birth control or to treat abnormal menstrual bleeding, sedatives for insomnia and anxiety, calcium channel blockers for high blood pressure.

Dr. Zeynel Mungan and colleagues in examing the medication risk of GERD wrote, "Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), which is common in many communities, is associated with structural factors, eating habits, and the use of certain drugs".

And, "The use of such drugs can lead to the emergence of GERD and can also exacerbate existing reflux symptoms. These drugs can contribute to GERD by directly causing mucosal damage, by reducing lower esophageal sphincter pressure (LESP), or by affecting esophagogastric motility".

Therefore, if you currently taking some of the aforementioned medication, please make sure that you know all the side effects for preventive measure.

Honey is the miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.

The rich golden liquid It is considered one of healthy sweet food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweetener by many people.

Scientists on the finding a natural remedy for the treatment of acid reflux investigated the honey effect on reflux oesophagitis (RE).

Injection honey displayed a strong effect on reflux oesophagitis through inhibiting the free radical expression which has been found to be mediators in the generation of RE.

Furthermore, besides inhibiting the over expression of free radicals, honey also promoted the production of antioxidants enzymes in the host, leading to the balanced ratio of free radical and antioxidant in the body.

Moreover, honey injection also reduced the levels of inflammation by inhibiting the nitric oxide and prostaglandin E2 production associated with free radical and inflammation, respectively.

The effects of honey against RE also attributed to the nature of high density, high viscosity, and low surface tension, that make them stay longer in the esophagus as a coating on the mucous membrane.

Additionally, researchers also found that the anti-RE activity of honey was also due to its nonperoxide antibacterial activity.

The findings suggested honey inhibits the onset of progression RE through a number of mechanisms, including proteins associated with the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and antioxidant enzymes produced by the honey and the host.

Taken altogether, honey may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and combined with the primary therapy for the treatment of reflux esophagitis.
