Artichoke, the Potential Anti Thyroid Cancer Herbal Remedy with No Side Effects, Scientists Reveal

Scientists may have found a herbal remedy for the treatment of thyroid cancer with no side effect, according to studies.

Thyroid cancer is a chronic and medical condition characterized by irregular cell growth in the thyroid gland due to the alternation of cell DNA.

Most cases of thyroid cancer start in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the gland, affecting the thyroid function in hormone production in the early stage.

About 45% of thyroid cancer is found in the population over the age of 45. According to the statistic, approximately over 53,000 adults in the United States are diagnosed with thyroid cancer every year.

In other words, the risk of thyroid cancer is about 4% a year, according to the data from 2005 to 2014. Overall, the 5-year survival rate for people with thyroid cancer is 98%.

The exact causes of thyroid cancer are unknown. Epidemiological studies suggested that people who have a family history of goiter, exposure to high levels of radiation, and certain hereditary syndromes are at an increased risk of the incidence.

Some researchers suggested that if you are female, your risk of thyroid cancer is increased substantially compared to the male counterpart.

Dr. Reza Rahbari, the lead scientist in the study to examine the thyroid cancer gender disparity, said, "Thyroid cancer is one of the fastest growing cancer diagnoses worldwide. It is 2.9-times more common in women than men".

And, "Recent studies on estrogen receptor status in thyroid cancer show a difference in the receptor subtypes expressed based on the histology of thyroid cancer. Moreover, the response to estrogen is dependent on the specific estrogen receptor expressed in thyroid cancer cells".

The results clearly suggested that the risk of thyroid cancer is 2.9 higher in the female, probably due to the response to the hormone estrogen.

Artichoke is a perennial thistle of Cynara cardunculus species of the Cynara genus, belonging to the family Carduoideae native to Southern Europe around the Mediterranean.

The herbal plant has been used in traditional medicine as a liver protective and detoxified agent, and to treat digestive disorders, abdominal pain gas and bloating, etc.

Researchers on finding a natural chemo compound for the treatment of thyroid cancer examined the antithyroid cancer activity of the sesquiterpene lactone cynaropicrin, a major constituent of the artichoke leaves extracts.

The aim of the study was to investigate the effects of cynaropicrin, a major compound from the sesquiterpenes on the grown of three human thyroid carcinoma cell lines.

Injection of cynaropicrin showed to inhibit the viability of CAL-62, 8505C and SW1736 cells in a dose- and time-dependent way, with an EC50 of about 5 mM observed after 48 h of treatment.

In the cellular growth assays, cynaropicrin inhibited the cell proliferation through the arrest of the cell cycle, mainly in the G2/M phase, observed by the presence of a significant percentage of necrotic cells.

Furthermore, the differentiation after 48 h of treatment with 10 mM of cynaropicrin suggested that the compound induced cell apoptosis also through the inhibition of the proteins associated with cellular survival and cell cycle division.

Moreover, the application also reduced the free radical activity in exhibiting the expression of lipid peroxidation, without any significant effect on the reactive oxygen species production.

These results clearly suggested that cynaropicrin exhibited the function of free radical in exerting the cytotoxic effect against the thyroid cancer without causing harm to the healthy nearby cells through its antioxidant activity.

Taken altogether, artichoke processed abundantly bioactive compound sesquiterpene lactone cynaropicrin may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of thyroid cancer, pending to the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.
