Green Tea, the Beverage Which Inhibits Airway Inflammatory Diseases

Green tea may have a therapeutic and positive effect in reduced risk airway inflammation and treatment of arthritis, some scientists suggested.

Inflammation is a physical condition characterized by reddened, swollen, hot, and often painful of one and some parts of the body, due to the immune response to injury or infection.

In other words, inflammation is a result of the immune response by the macrophages, activating the proinflammatory cytokines protein in protecting the damage and injured tissue against foreign pathogens invasion in the acute phase of infection.

Some cytokines with duo function in switching from anti-inflammatory cytokines against inflammation under normal condition to proinflammatory in the acute phase of body damage and injury.

Although the activation of proinflammatory cytokines plays an important role in healing the body injured tissue, overproduction can cause abnormal healing with scars and death of healthy cells.

For example, Overproduction of inflammatory cytokines in hepatitis infection can cause liver scars, leading to the development of liver fibroid.

In the investigation of green tea, bioactive polyphenols epigallocatechin 3-gallate (EGCG) in the reduced risk airway inflammation through its immune modulatory activities in several cytokines and pathways researchers at the College of Medicine found that application of EGCG exerts a significant impact in regulating the breakdown of extracellular matrix in normal physiological processes of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP-9) with function in remodeling the major change that is responsible for irreversible asthmatic airflow restriction in toluene diisocyanate (TDI)-inhalation lung tissues associated in the initiation of pulmonary diseases.

Further analysis also suggested that EGCG reduces airway inflammation through inhibiting overproduction of the levels of TNF-alpha and Th2 cytokine (IL-5) in BAL fluid during the course of the systemic inflammatory response against the invasion of bacteria and virus in acute phase reaction.

These results indicated that EGCG processes a strong impact in reduced airway constriction caused by inflammatory agents in facilitating the asthmatic reaction.

Interestingly, the efficacy of EGCG decreased airway inflammation induced by application of T DI through its antioxidant activity and stimulated the production of natural antioxidants in the body tissue by preventing the ROS in the precipitated chain reaction to induced cytotoxicity and suppressed MMP-9 in orchestrated inflammatory cell migration.

Dr. Kim SH, after taking account of other co-founders, said, "Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), a major form of tea catechin, has anti-allergic properties" and " EGCG regulates inflammatory cell migration possibly by suppressing MMP-9 production and ROS generation".

The above differentiation was supported by the study of biological activity of EGCG in anti-allergic and anti-inflammatory activities of lung tissues in an asthma model-mouse, and nasal epithelial cells of patients with allergic rhinitis conducted by the.

According to the evaluation, compared to control group, treatment group ameliorated the expression of MUC5B with physiologic functions in the mucus gel that ensure normal mucus clearance and p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) in response to stress stimuli such as inflammatory factors in the induction of cell differentiation, apoptosis and autophagy to protect the body against infectious cells to growth and site expansion.

Similarly, application of green EGCG also reduced expression of MMP-9 in enhancing inflammatory cell migration as found in the first study without alternating the extracellular signal-related kinase (ERK)1/2 MAPK expression in response to inflammatory factors.

These results suggested that EGCG demonstrated a potential effect in reducing airway inflammation through interaction with the nasal epithelial cells of patients with allergic inflammation by decreased phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA)-induced MUC5B and MMP-9 expression.

According to the experiment of murine heterotopic tracheal allograft model of OB in mice model, injection of green tea EGCG inhibited inflammation, with significantly less neutrophil and macrophage infiltration and significantly reduced fibrosis. Those factors were found to contribute to the rejection of the transplant lung organ.

Moreover, EGCG also decreased expression of inflammatory cytokines production involved systematic inflammation and protein monocyte chemokine monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1) in promoting infectious cells migration and infiltration of monocytes/macrophages through increased antifibrotic cytokine interferon-γ-inducible protein-10 (IP-10) and decreased profibrotic cytokine transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) information of excess fibrous connective tissue in the organ or tissue.

The findings strongly suggested that EGCG has great potential in ameliorating the development of obliterative airway disease.

Taken all together, green tea containing bioactive polyphenols EGCG may be considered a functional food in the prevention of airway inflammation and airway-related diseases through a complex system involved may proteins and pathways.

However, the intake of green tea supplement should be taken with exceptional care, as acute liver toxicity has been reported in some medical literature.
