Apricot, A Natural Antibiotic Which Protects the Stomach Against Chronic Gastritis Caused by Bacteria Helicobacter pylori (Hp), Scientists Show

Apricot may have a potential and substantial effect in reduced risk, progression and treatment of chronic gastritis, some scientists suggested.

Chronic Gastritis is a condition of chronic inflammation of the stomach mucosa with function to protect the stomach against over expression of stomach acid produced for breaking down food.

The most common cause of chronic gastritis is infection by Helicobacter pylori bacteria

Chronic gastritis can be caused by immune system which mistakenly attacks the cells in the stomach lining and long term intake of conventional medicine, such as NSAIDs, aspirin, ibuprofen

Conventional medication used for treatment of the condition are totally depended to the causes of the disease, including antibiotics for bacterial infection, medicine that block acid production and promote or neutralize stomach acid.

If you experience localized symptoms of upper abdominal pain, indigestion, bloating, nausea,... and vomiting,  you have chronic gastritis. Please see your doctor to rule out the possibility.

The apricot tree is about 8–12 m tall and a trunk up to 40 cm diameter belongs to the family Rosaceae. Apricot is classified with the family of the plum and has yellow to orange, often tinged red on the side which is exposed to the sun.

Chemical constituents
Oleic acid, linoleic acid, palmitic.acid, glycolipids, phospholipids, benzoic acid (I), isorhamnetin (II), quercetin (III), kaempferol-3-O-beta-D-galactopyranoside (IV), isorhamnetin-3-O-beta-D-glucopyranoside (V), isoquercitrin (VI), hypericin (VII) and rutin (VIII)(3) and flavonoid glycosides, (4),

In the study of 1358 asymptomatic adults diagnosed with chronic gastictis induced by bacteria Helicobacter pylori dividing into group with high-intake and group with low-intake of Japanese apricot (CJA), at the end of experience, researchers found that
* Among H. pylori-positive non-elderly subjects, antibody titers were significantly lower in the high-intake group (P=0.041).

* High apricot intake group demonstrated a significantly less H. pylori bacterial load and mononuclear infiltration irrespective of gastric site in compared to low intake group.

Finally, the Endoscopic tissue biopsy from participants also confirmed that high intake group shows less H. pylori bacterial load and mononuclear infiltration irrespective of gastric site.

Dr. Enomoto S, the lead author said, "Our findings strongly indicate a preventive effect of JA intake on CAG by inhibiting H. pylori infection and reducing active mucosal inflammation".

Furthermore, in the study to examine Helicobacter pylori (Hp) infection in induction of gastric disorders, including chronic active gastritis, peptic ulcers, intestinal metaplasia and cancer with Hp-inoculated gerbils given CJA in their drinking water at concentrations of 1 and 3% for 10 weeks, researchers at the Aichi Cancer Center Research Institute, showed that
* CJA intake groups exerts a lower score of gastritis and mucosal hyperplasia in compared to the Hp-inoculated control group.
* PH in the glandular stomach is lower in the dose of 1 and 3% CJA in compared to Hp-inoculated control groups.

These results indicated that CJA at doses of 1 and 3% has a strong effect in protect the stomach liing against over expression of stomach acid.

On the final report, Dr. Otsuka T, the lead scientist wrote, "These findings suggest that suppressive effects on gastric cancer development might also be expected as a result of decreased numbers of Hp and improvement of Hp-induced chronic active gastritis on administration of CJA.".

Taking altogether, Apricot fruit juice may be used as natural antibiotic functional food for treatment of chronic gastritis caused by Helicobacter pylori bacteria without inducing any side effects.
