Herbal Therapy: Green Tea Bioactive Polyphenols In Reduced Weight Gain and Promoted Weight Loss

Green tea polyphenols may have a therapeutic effect in reduced weight gain through decreased hormone expression with function direct influence of excess energy deposit, some scientists opinionated.

Green tea, a precious drink processes numbers of health benefit known to almost everyone in Asia and Western world. However, as yin in nature herbal medicine or food, long term injection of large amounts may obstruct the balance of yin-yang, induced "yin excessive syndrome" or "yang vacuity syndrome" including weaken immunity and painful case of GERD,... according to traditional Chinese medicine's Yin-Yang theory.

In the compared green tea, polyphenols [epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), epigallocatechin (EGC)] in decoction of green tea leaves versus usual green tea extracts to evaluate the effect in weigh gain in obese animal models fed with high fat diet, researchers after taking into account of other con-founders suggested that green tea decoction  acute administration of GTD with 2/3 EGCG+1/3 EGC inhibited SGLT-1 activity involved distinct and complementing glucose homeostasis through absorbing glucose from the diet in the small intestine and by reabsorbing the filtered glucose in the tubular system of the kidney, thus reducing access energy being converted to glycogen or fat and deposit in liver, muscles and fat cells. 

Additionally, green tea decoction not only improved glucose tolerance but also demonstrated a significant increase GLUT2 protein in facilitated glucose movement across cell membranes in the regulation of glucose absorption in distribution of dietary sugar to tissues to induce calorie restriction.

Chronic administration of green tea decoction GTD for 6 weeks, in the same experiment models also displayed a huge reduction of body weight gain, circulating triglycerides and cholesterol and improved glucose tolerance, through significantly reduced SGLT-1 as seen in acute application and and increased GLUT2 mRNA levels in the jejunum mucosa with function in increase the surface area of tissue available to absorb nutrients from ingested foodstuffs for decreased fat accumulation and glucose in liver.

Dr. Snoussi C, the lead auhtor said, "GTD-treated rats for 6 weeks display significantly reduced SGLT-1 and increased GLUT2 mRNA levels in the jejunum mucosa". This result showed that green tea decoction with polyphenols such as epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), epigallocatechin (EGC) may have a certain effect in reduced weight gain through decreased fat deposit in the liver and promoted calorie restriction.

Further analysis of C57BL/6J mice fed a high-fat/high-sucrose diet (HF/HS, 32% energy from fat; 25% energy from sucrose) or the same diet supplemented with 0.25% GTP or BTP or a low-fat/high-sucrose (LF/HS, 10.6% energy from fat, 25% energy from sucrose) diet for 4 weeks showed that treatment with decaffeinated green tea (GT)  polyphenols inhibited weight gain in mice fed an obesogenic diet as indicated above, through the rearrange the relative proportions of Blautia, Bryantella, Collinsella, Lactobacillus, Marvinbryantia, Turicibacter, Barnesiella, and Parabacteroides in correlated with weight loss by a decrease of cecum Firmicutes and increase in Bacteroidetes in the gastrointestinal tract.

In deed, GTP not only induced weight loss in association with alteration of the gut microbiota but also increased hepatic AMPK in reaction in sugar metabolism, and energy storage and release.

Interestingly, according to the START Clinic for the Mood and Anxiety Disorders, oral administration of green tea extract induced an unexpected decrease in total body fat mass, a decrease in body fat percentage and an increase in lean body mass in patients with weight gain induced by psychotropic medications.

Taken together, green tea, bioactive active polyphenols epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), epigallocatechin (EGC) may be used as functional food in reduced weight gain induced by all sources and increased weigh loss through regulation of energy metabolism in fat accumulation.
