Beet, one of the root vegetable may have a therapeutic effect in reduced risk and treatment of breast cancer, a renowned institute opinionated.

Beet,  a perennial plant with leafy stems growing to 1–2 m tall, is best known as the beetroot or garden beet, belongings to the amaranth family.

According to the Howard University, extract of red beetroot (Beta vulgaris L.), the FDA approved red food color E162, in animal model, exhibited anti cancer activity by suppressing the early onset of multi-organ tumors.

In the compared red beetroot extract and anticancer drug, doxorubicin cytotoxic effect against estrogen receptor-positive human breast cancer cells (MCF-7), both treated groups exerted a similar and significant anti breast cancer cell line effect in induction of cytotoxicity, although the cytotoxicity of the beetroot extract was significantly lower to those of doxorubicin.

Dr. Kapadia GJ, the lead author postulated, the breast cancer cell line inhibition of beetroot may be attributed to the phytochemical betanin, the major betacyanin constituent found abundantly in the vegetable.

Also in testing of chemotherapeutic drug oxorubicin (DOX, Adriamycin), at different concentrations of BRJ (0.5, 5, 50, 250, and 500 µg/ml) with or without DOX, BRJ showed a significantly reduced breast cancer cell growth within and at 48 hours, similar to those of DOX-induced apoptosis, observed by TUNEL assay.

Additionally, in dose dependent, co-treatment of BRJ and DOX, improved the efficacy of treatment in enhanced apoptosis in breast cancer cells by exerting a strong effect in ameliorated generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS by) produced by DOX.

In fact, lower concentrations, combination of BRJ and DOX, also displayed the most effective in explicited cardioprotection and chemoprevention in tested subjects synergistically.

More importantly, Dr. Kapadia GJ, the lead author in the other study conducted by the same University said, " a long-term daily exposure to low doses of B through diet might be safe and sufficient to produce cancer chemopreventive effect in humans.

Promisingly, intake of beet juice may also contribute to overall positive reduction in DOX drug concentration in use for influence cytotoxicitic activity for treatment of human breast cancer.

Taking together, Beet Juice, used alone or combination with chemotherapeutic medicine, may be served as a functional food for reduced risk and enhanced treatment of breast cancer.
