Chinese Herbs – Zao Xiu (Rhizoma Paridis)

Zao Xiu is also known as Herb Paris. The bitter, cold and slightly toxic herb has been used in TCM as antibiotic , anti-inflammatory agent and to treat Asian influenza A, inhibits Shigella dysenteriae, Salmonella paratyphi, relieve pain, etc., as it clears Heat, expels toxins, resolves oedema, calms pain, etc., by enhancing the functions of liver channel.

Ingredients
1. Alkaloids A, B, C, D
2. Diosgenin 3-O-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1→2)-[α-L-arabinofuranosyl-(1→4)]-β-D-glucopyranoside       3. Diosgenin3-O-α-rhamnopyranosyl-(1→4)-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1→4)-[α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1→2)]-β-D-glucopyranoside
4. Diosgenin 3-O-β-chacotrioside
5. ,Pregna-5,16-dien-3β-ol-20-one 3-O-β-chacotrioside

Health Benefits
1. Analgesic and sedative effects
in the study of the analgesic and sedative effects of six different species of Rhizoma Paridis, showed that ong them Paris polyphylla var. chinensis, P. polyphylla var. yunnanensis are stronger in analgesic action. Sedative action of P. fargesii, P. polyphylla var. chinensis, P. thibetica is also strong(1).
2. Anti cancers and anti-angiogenesis effects
Study of the potential anti-angiogenic and antitumor effect of the ethanol extract of Rhizoma Paridis (RPE) in vitro and in vivo, indicated that RPE exerted a higher inhibition effect on the proliferation of HUVECs than Lovo cells. The tube formation and cell migration were also significantly inhibited in the presence of RPE in a concentration-dependent manner though the significant inhibition effects were observed at the cytotoxic dose. RPE induced cell apoptosis and G0-G1 cell cycle arrest of HUVECs. In vivo, significant tumor growth inhibition was observed in human colon cancer xenografts established by Lovo cells, accompanying by a marked decrease in MVD(2).
3. Hemostatic, cytotoxic and hemolytic activities
In the study of six species (P. polyphylla var. yunnanensis, P. delavayi var. delavayi, P. fargesii var. Fargesii, P. bashanensis Wang et Tang, P. polyphyllar var. minora, and P. polyphylla var. pseudothibetical) collected from three Provinces in China, and to compare the hemostatic, cytotoxic and hemolytic activities by different assays, found that paris delavayi var. delavayi and Paris bashanensis Wang et Tang could be used as the resources of hemostatic drugs and P. fargesii var. Fargesii as the antitumor medicine(3).
4.  Anti lung cancer
researchers at the in the study of found that Formosanin C (FC) isolated from Rhizoma Paridis, showed suppression of enzyme activity of MMP-2 and MMP-9, and protein expression of MMP-1, -2, -3, -9 and -14 excreted from LA795 cells. Finally, FC exhibited much more effective inhibition of tumor growth and pulmonary metastasis in T739 mice than cisplatin did. Overall, the strong inhibition of MMP expression by FC might provide a potential therapeutic modality for lung tumors(4).
5. Antitumor and antimetastatic activities
Rhizoma Paridis saponins (RPS) inhibited tumor growth by inducing apoptosis and upregulated the expression of TIMP-2 and down-regulated the level of MMP-2 and MMP-9. In conclusion, RPS is a potent anticancer agent that elicits programmed cell death and inhibits metastases in murine lung adenocarcinoma in vivo(5)
