Cabbage Inhibits Human Cancer Cells in Vitro

By Kyle J. Norton

Cancers are a class of chronic diseases associated with irregular cell growth in the tissue and organs caused by the alternation of cell DNA.

At the advanced stage, malignant cells can travel a distance away from the original site to infect other healthy cells and tissues.

There are many types of cancer, depending on the location where cancer begins.

As of today, researchers do not know what are the exact cause of cancers. however many researchers believe, exposure to environmental toxins, genetic mutation, and an unhealthy diet and lifestyle are the most common risk factors associated with the onset of the diseases.

Healthy cells become cancerous if they grow uncontrollably and disorderly out of range of a normal healthy cell population which can only divide between 40 and 60 times.

According to the Hayflick limit theory, most cell survival is totally dependent on the telomeres on the ends of each chromosome.

Every time, healthy cells undergo division, the telomeres are shortened. Once the telomeres shorten to a critical length, the cells will die off. However, cancer cells can divide indefinitely.

According to the statistic provided by the UK Cancers research, in 2012, an estimated 14.1 million new cases of cancer occurred worldwide.

Sadly, more than 4 in ten cancers occurring worldwide are in countries at a low or medium level of the Human Development Index (HDI).

The Human Development Index (HDI) is a statistic composite index of life expectancy, education, and per capita income indicators, according to the definition.

In 2018, over 1,7 million new cases of cancer are diagnosed in the US, and approximately over 600,000 patients will die from the diseases.

The four most common types of cancer, occurring worldwide are lung, female breast, bowel and prostate cancer.

Early diagnosis as always is the best way to improve survival rate. Depending on types of cancer, most cancers have a 100% 5 years survival rate, if they are diagnosed at the stage of 0 and 1.

Cabbage is a species of Brassica oleracea belongings to the family Brassicaceae (or Cruciferae), native to the Mediterranean region along the seacoast. The veggie has a short stem with a crowded mass of leaves, usually green but in some varieties, it may be red or purplish.

On finding a natural wholefood for the prevention of malignant tumors, researchers examined the effects of pierisin, a protein purified from pupae of the cabbage butterfly, Pieris rapae on the human gastric cancer TMK-1 cell line and human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs).

According to the results of differentiation,
* Pierisin showed cytotoxic effects in all the human cells tested, with IC50 values ranging from 0.043 ng/ml to 150 ng/ml.

* Compared to other cancer cell lines, the cervical carcinoma cell line, HeLa, was the most sensitive to pierisin, showing a 1000-fold less IC50 value than that of HUVECs.

* Furthermore, pierisin clearly induced apoptotic cell death in most cancer cell lines and HUVECs through multiple different pathways including the proinflammatory, tumor-suppressive and immunomodulatory pathways.

Based on the results, researchers wrote, "Pierisin may thus be a promising new candidate for cancer therapy".

Taken altogether, cabbage may process anti-cancer activity, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Coltsfoot (Tussilago farfara), the Natural Treatment of Common Cold Symptoms

By Kyle J. Norton

The common cold is a condition of viral infection of the upper respiratory system that leads to symptoms of runny nose, nasal congestion, sneezing, sore throat, cough, headache, etc.

The condition is the most commonly occurring illnesses in the entire world, with more than 1 billion colds per year reported in the United States alone.

The common cold is a self-limiting illness caused by any 1 of more than 200 viruses.

Influenza, also known as the flu, is an infectious disease caused by an influenza virus.

Influenza is no minor illness. If you are senior or have a serious heart and lung disease, you are at the greatest risk for coming down with a dangerous case of flu because your immune system might not be strong enough to fend off the infection.

There are 3 types of flu influenza: A, B, and C. the influenza virus A and B are considered seasonal flu that causes sniffling, aching, coughing, and running and stuffy nose and fever to over 20% of the general population.

Influenza virus types C tends to cause mild upper respiratory infections, similar to those of cold.

Healthy individuals who have influenza are usually recovered within one week.

However, people with immature and weakened immune system such as young children under age 5, adults older than age 65 residents of nursing homes and other long-term care facilities, chronic illnesses, such as asthma, heart disease, kidney disease, liver disease, and diabetes are not only associated with the risk of influenza but also increase the risk of influenza deadly complication.

Pregnant women and women up to two weeks postpartum due to change of the immune system and other organs have been found to make a woman more prone to influenza and influenza complications.

Coltsfoot(Tussilago farfara) is a perennial herbaceous plant, genus Tussilago, belonging to the family Asteraceae, native to Europe and Asia. The herb has been used over thousands of years to treat asthma, various coughs, bronchial congestion, respiratory disorders, headaches and obstruction in the nasal passage, etc.

According to Mylinh Nguyen, Jennifer Ramil, and Faith WydraWilkes University, Wilkes-Barre, PA
* A Chinese herbal cough syrup called Nin Jiom containing coltsfoot as its main ingredients (Meseyton, 2004). for the treatment of common cold symptoms

* Many chemicals found in coltsfoots such as bisabolene epoxide isolated from the flower buds of coltsfoot showed to inhibit nitric oxide synthesis in lipopolysaccharide-activated macrophages (Ryu, 1999) against the common cold virus.

* Additionally,  Oplopanone, an extract from T. farfara, has been found to process the activity of a respiratory stimulant.

Taken altogether, coltsfoot may be considered a remedy for the treatment of common cold and symptoms, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Devil's Club Shows a Strong Anticancer Activities in Vitro and Vivo

By Kyle J. Norton

Cancer is the class of diseases associated with the growth of the cells disorderly and uncontrollably due to the alternation of DNA.

Most cases of cancer begin in the cells on the surface of the inner lining tissues of the organ or gland. At the early stage, most cancers are asymptomatic.

However, at the advanced stage, most cancers not can induce common symptoms such as gastrointestinal discomforts, unintended weight loss, loss of appetite and fatigue but also localized symptoms depending on the affected tissues and organs.

Cancers at this stage also can travel a distance away from the original site to induce secondary metastasis.

According to the statistics provided by the American cancer society, in 2018,1,735,350 new cases were diagnosed, representing more than 4,700 new cancer diagnoses each day.

The lifetime probability of being diagnosed with cancer is 39.7% for men and 37.6% for women.

Cancers are the second leading cause of death worldwide besides heart diseases.

The most common types of cancer in Canada include lung, colorectal, breast and prostate cancers. And these 4 cancers are account for half of all cancers diagnosed in Canada.

Believe or not, 1/4 of cancers death are due to lung cancer.

Depending on types of cancer, people with cancers may experience general and specific symptoms.
Compared to all cancers, lung, breast, prostate, and colorectal cancers are the most common cancer in the US.

Most invasive cancers process angiogenetic ability by which they can divide and spread.

Angiogenesis is the process that develops new blood vessels from pre-existing vessels by invasive tumors to provide energy(nutrition and fluids) for cancerous cells growth and proliferation.

Devil's Club is a large shrub, genus Oplopanax, belonging to the family Aralioideae, native to the cool moist forests of western North America.

The herb has been used in traditional and herbal medicine as Adaptogen, Antipyretic, Pain Reliever, Antitussive, Antibacterial agent and to treat Arthritis, Diabetes, Colds, Cough, Sore throat, Chest congestion, Stomach pain, Constipation, Gall stones, Influenza, Cancer, etc.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of chronic diseases, scientists examined the anticancer effects of O. horridus (Devil's club).

* The different extracts from Oplopanax root, stem, berry, root bark, and their fractions were investigated in vitro for their potential antiproliferative effects on human HCT-116, HT-29, and SW-480 colorectal cancer cell lines [19–21, 47].

* Male and female transgenic C57BL/6J-Foxp3-RFP mice (C57BL/6- Foxp3tm1Flv/J) were employed for in vivo anti-AML. After one week following engraftment, the 70% ethanol extract of Oplopanax root was diluted into the drinking water at a final concentration of 20 g/mL. The survival of both male and female mice were significantly increased upon the inclusion of the extract in the drinking water [45].

*  The effects of the extracts and polyynes have also been evaluated using MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231 human breast cancer cell lines [19, 21, 47]. The IC50 of the total extract, 50, 70, and 100% ethanol fractions on MCF-7 cells were 248.4, 123.1, 44.0, and 31.5 g/mL, respectively [47].

* The antiproliferative effects of nonsmall cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cells were evaluated. The IC50 of the extract, 50, 70, and 100% ethanol fractions for antiproliferation on NSCLC cells, were 125.3, 271.1, 17.6, and 23.2g/mL, respectively [19].

* The extract significantly inhibited the proliferation of HP62 at low IC50. Apoptosis focused antibody array profile indicated upregulation of cytochrome C, claspin, cIAP-2, and HTRA2/Omi apoptosis-related markers, suggesting that the effect was via targeting the intrinsic mitochondrial apoptosis pathway [51]

Taken altogether, Devil's Club may be considered an anticancer remedy,, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Angelica Protects the Neurons Against Neuro-Inflammation in Vitro

By Kyle J. Norton

The central system is the complex of nerve tissues including the brain and spinal cord with functions to respond to the integrating sensory information.

Neuroinflammation is a process of the immune system that responds to harmful pathogens that induced oxidative stress to the brain.

Neuroinflammation is also the inflammation of nervous tissue associated with the immune response in the first phase of infection including infection, traumatic brain injury, toxic metabolites, or autoimmunity.

There many risk factors associated with the onset of neuroinflammation similar to other tissues inflammation, including infection, traumatic brain injury, toxic metabolites, or autoimmunity.

Inflammation is a natural response of the immune system in which the macrophages of the first defense stimulates the production of blood palette to cover the wound in case of injury and production of proinflammatory cytokines to the site of infection to fence off the foreign pathogens.

Inflammation also can be triggered by the immune mistakenly attacked the body tissues in cases of autoimmune disease.

Neuroinflammatory disease can be acute or chronic. Chronic neuroinflammation that leads to the activation of glial cells and the recruitment of inflammatory cytokines into the brain is found to associate with neurodegenerative diseases.

Most cases of the neuroinflammatory disease associated with the loss of neuronal structure and function.can be measured by the typical inflammatory markers, including CSF Aβ1-42, tau and p-tau181, and a panel of 37 neuroinflammatory markers in patients with Alzheimer's disease.

On finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of neurological disorders, scientists examined the effects of dangguishaoyao-san (DSS) (Angelica sinensis, Paeoniae radix, Rhizoma Ligusticum, Poria cocos, Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae, and Rhizoma Alismatis) on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated BV-2 microglial cells.
Angelica or Danggui is a herb of Genus Angelica from the family Apiaceae, indigenous to China.

The herb has been used as a Queen herb in traditional Chinese medicine antispasmodic and vasodilatory agent, and to balance the hormones in women for a normal menstrual cycle and menstruation and strengthen heart, spleen, kidneys, and liver for both men and women, etc. In other words, it is used to treat gynecological ailments, fatigue, mild anemia, and high blood pressure. It has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, etc.

According to the results of BV-2 cells pretreated with 0.58-1.16 mg/mL of DSS for 2 h and then treated with 1 μg/mL LPS for 24 h,
* DSS treatment at concentrations of 0.58-1.16 mg/mL did not induce significant cytotoxicity.

* DSS attenuated the release of pro-inflammatory factors, such as interleukin-1β (IL-1β), iNOS and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) in LPS-induced BV-2 cells.

* DSS attenuated the mRNA expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines, TLR2, and TLR4 by decreasing TLR4 and TLR protein levels and decreased levels of phosphorylation of IκB which regulates the cellular response to inflammation in LPS-induced BV-2 cells.

* DSS also down-regulated the nuclear translocation of p65 in the initiation of cancer cell proliferation and survival.

Based on the results, researchers suggest, " DSS has a protective effect on neuroinflammation in LPS-induced BV-2 microglial cells through the TLRs/NF-κB signaling pathway".

Taken altogether, Dandelion may be considered an antioxidant remedy for the treatment of neuroinflammation, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Cruciferous Vegetables Reduces the Ris of Cardiovascular Diseases (CVD)

By Kyle J. Norton

Chronic diseases are medical conditions that last more than 3 months depending on the type of diseases.

In other words, chronic diseases generally cannot be prevented or cured by medication, nor do they just disappear.

According to the statistics, chronic diseases affect millions of people worldwide, leading to the death of 35 million people in 2005, including many young people and those in middle age.
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a group of conditions associated with the heart and blood vessels.

Cardiovascular diseases are chronic diseases that refer to heart diseases, affecting millions of people in the world. According to statistics, over 17.7 million people died from CVDs in 2015.

In other words, anything that serves to damage the inner lining of blood vessels and impedes the transportation of oxygen and nutrition to the heart can be defined as a risk of heart disease.

The causes of cardiovascular diseases are associated with the accumulation of plaques in the arteries, impeding the blood flow which carries the nutrients and oxygen to the heart, which causes damage to the heart tissue and reduced function of the arteries.

Hyperlipidemia and hypertension are the risk factors of the diseases.

According to the statistic cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in women in the US with 90% of women having one risk factor.

Believe it or not, women are 4 times more likely to die from heart disease than breast cancer and 2/3 of women are not aware of heart disease is such a risk for them, according to the Jean Hailes for Women Health in the article cardiovascular health.

According to statistics, heart disease is the second leading cause of death, claiming more than 48,000 lives every year.in Canada.

Cruciferous vegetables are a group of vegetables, belongings to the family Brassicaceae (also called Cruciferae) with many genera, species, and cultivated all over the world in suitable climate for commercial profits, including cauliflower, cabbage, kale, garden cress, bok choy, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and green leafy vegetables.

On finding a potential remedy for the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases,  researchers the effect of sulforaphane against cardiovascular disease via Nrf2 activation.

According to the results of the experiment,
* Sulforaphane (SFN) is an ITC exerted anticancer activity by both in vivo and epidemiological studies.

* SFN demonstrated strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties in CVD.

* SFN activated NF-E2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) that serves as a defense mechanism against oxidative stress and electrophilic toxicants by inducing more than a hundred cytoprotective proteins, including antioxidants and phase II detoxifying enzymes.

Based on the results, researchers said, "the evidence from clinical studies and animal experiments relating to the potential mechanisms by which SFN modulates Nrf2 activation and protects against CVD".

Taken altogether, cruciferous vegetables may be considered functional remedies for the prevention of CVD, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Omega 3 Fatty Acids Decrease the Risk of Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Diseases

By Kyle J. Norton

Non-alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease is a condition of fatty liver diseases as a result of accumulated fat in the liver, not caused by abusive alcohol consumption.

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is emerging as a widespread condition in the US, approximately 30% of the adult population are obese.

The disease is also manifested by steatosis, steatohepatitis, cirrhosis.

Obesity is associated linearly to the prevalent risk of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).

The disease, in most cases, is asymptomatic, however, it has been seen to slowly progress to end-stage liver disease.

According to the statistics, the non-alcoholic fatty liver disease affects over 25% of the US population.

Epidemiological studies suggested that most cases of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease are found in obese and extremely overweight adults. However, people with diabetes, high cholesterol or high triglycerides are associated with the increased risk of the diseases. Truly, 75% of obese have steatosis and 20% to 35% have nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH).

As of today, there is no effective treatment in patients with NAFLD, change of diet and lifestyle to induce weight loss are the most common nonmedical treatment conventionally for management of the disease.

Some researchers suggested that the cause of NAFLD may be associated with the promotion of the Western diet over the past few decades.

Omega-3 fatty acids are phytochemicals in the class of lipids, found abundantly in deepsea fisk, dark-green leafy vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts, etc.

The three main components of Omega-3 fatty acids are alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of liver diseases, researchers examined the therapeutic benefit of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (ω-3 PUFAs) on the nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).

The pooled; meta-analyses were conducted using random-effect or fixed-effect models based on the search of databases of PubMed, Cochrane Library, Springer Link, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Wanfang, and Chinese Scientific and Technological Journal (VIP) databases for RCTs on oral ω-3 PUFA supplementation in patients with NAFLD.

According to the results of 18 studies involving 1424 patients, * ω-3 PUFAs exerted a significant benefit for liver fat, alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, γ-glutamyl transferase, the liver stress markers, triglycerides, insulin resistance, and glucose, compared to control.

* However, there was significant interstudy heterogeneity.

* Furthermore, subgroup and regression analyses showed no significantly clear methodologic discrepancy. and publication bias and serious adverse events were not detected.

Collectively, researchers said, "Our meta-analysis suggests that ω-3 PUFA supplementation may decrease liver fat and hepatic enzyme parameters".

Taken altogether, Omega-3 fatty acids may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of non-alcoholic fatty liver diseases, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of Omega-3 fatty acids in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Ursolic Acid, The Promised Anti-Bacterial and Anti-Biofilm Phytochemical

By Kyle J. Norton

Infection is a condition caused by a harmful microbial invasion of the body tissues

Most cases of bacterial infection are treated with antibiotics. However, bacterias are very adaptable, overuse of antibiotics has been found to make them resistant to antibiotics.

Out of trillions of strains of bacteria in the world, only a few cause diseases in humans. Believe it or not, our gut contains trillion microorganisms, most of them are bacteria.

The most common symptoms of bacterial infection are redness and heat, swelling, fever, pain at the site of infection.

In severe cases, the patient may also experience symptoms of swollen lymph glands.

Most cases of bacterial infection are treated successfully if the types of bacteria that cause the infection are identified.

A biofilm is a system that can be adapted internally to environmental conditions by its inhabitants. In other words, biofilm-forming from bacteria is one of the common forms of bacterial infection affecting up to 80% of human bacterial infections.

In biology, biofilm used by the bacteria as a natural defense mechanism of bacteria to survive under harsh environments, by attaching to a solid surface in a large community, including the skin, teeth, and mucosa.

Bacterial initiates biofilm formation with an aim to greatly enhance survival in hosts and cause chronic infections, leading to long-term inflammation and tissue damages.

The formation of a biofilm of bacteria may go through 2 stages, the adhesion phase is the stage that the bacteria attached to the surface or accumulates on a surface, After the adhesion phase, the bacteria enter the colonial phase, where the bacteria continue to grow, leading to the formation of dense bacterial aggregates.

Ursolic acid is a phytochemical in the subclass of Triterpenoid, belongings to the group of Terpenes found abundantly in apples, basil, bilberries, cranberries, peppermint, lavender, oregano, hawthorn, prunes., etc.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of chronic infectious diseases, researchers examined the effect of UA on carbapenem-resistant Enterobacter cloacae (CREC).

According to the analysis,
* UA has a MIC of 0.1 mg/mL against CREC.

* UA treatment inhibited CREC growth and impaired membrane integrity of CREC cells, observed by the decrease in intracellular ATP level, pH, and membrane potential and distinctive deformation in cellular morphology.

* UA exerted a significant antibacterial effect on biofilm formation of CREC and inactivated CREC cells within biofilms.

After talking about other factors into account, researchers said, "These findings reveal that UA has potent antibacterial and antibiofilm activity against CREC and, thus, can be used as a natural food preservative to reduce CREC-related infections".

Taken altogether, Ursolic acid may be considered adjunct therapies in the treatment of bacterial infection, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of Ursolic acid in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
