Herbal Elecampane (Inula helenium) May Be a Potent Therapeutic Agent Against Chronic Myeloid Leukemia

By Kyle J. Norton

Leukemia is a medical condition caused by an abnormal increase of white blood cells produced by the bone marrow and/or the lymphatic system. Depending on the malignant granulocytes or lymphocytes, leukemia is classified into myeloid or lymphoblastic leukemia.

Bone marrow is the soft tissue inside the hollow center of the major bone, including the spine, pelvis, underarm, leg...

Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) is a medical condition associated with the overgrowth of immature cells that started in the blood-forming cells of the bone marrow.

More precisely, chronic leukemia is a disease characterized by a slow but still excessive build-up of relatively immature abnormal white blood cells.

Chronic leukemia has a tendency to spread slowly to other parts of the body through the bloodstream and/or lymphatic system.

In other words, compared to normal cells that will die after a limited cell division, chronic myeloid leukemia cells continue to divide with no meaning of dying or stopping, leading to proliferation that affects other healthy cells in the bone marrow.

At the advanced stage, chronic myeloid leukemia cell can leak to the bloodstream, leading to secondary metastasis, depending on the infected tissues and organs.

According to the statistics provided by the American Cancer Society, in 2019, approximately, 8,990 new cases will be diagnosed with CML (5,250 in men and 3,740 in women. and CML is expected to cause the death of 1,140 people including 660 men and 480 women.

More precisely, CML accounts for 15% of all cases of leukemia diagnosed each year. In other words, the lifetime risk of CML in the US is 1 person in 526.

The 5-year survival rate of patients treated with chemo drug imatinib (Gleevec®) including all stages of CML is 90%.

On finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of leukemia, scientists examined the effects of Costunolide, a sesquiterpene lactone, a small molecular monomer extracted from Inula helenium on K562/ADR chronic myeloid leukemia cells.

Elecampane, also known as Horse-heal (Inula helenium) is a perennial composite plant, genus nulla, belonging to Asteraceae, native to Southern Europe, and Asia.

The plant has been used in traditional and herbal medicine in treating bronchitis or emphysema, night sweats, pulmonary tuberculosis, irritating cough, catarrhal discharges, etc.

According to tested analysis,
* Costunolide dramatically enhanced doxorubicin-induced antiproliferative activity against K562/ADR cells through inhibition of PI3K/Akt pathway associated with cancer cell proliferation.
* Costunolide combined with doxorubicin also causes cancer cell death by activating the pro-apoptotic proteins aspases 3, cleavage of poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase.

* Moreover, P-glycoprotein expression, a marker for chemotherapy resistance was also inhibited by the injection of Costunolide.

Based on the results, researchers suggest, " These results demonstrate that Costunolide may be a potent therapeutic agent against CML".

Taken altogether, Dandelion may be considered a remedy for the treatment of chronic myeloid leukemia, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Devil's club (Oplopanax horridus) Processes the Best Anti-Viral activity

By Kyle J. Norton

Infection occurs when the bacteria successfully invade the body and start to multiply. Most cases of infectious diseases caused by bacteria are treated with antibiotics.

Infectious diseases are a medical condition caused by pathogenic microorganisms, including bacteria, viruses, parasites or fungi.

Most cases of infectious diseases are contagious by spreading directly or indirectly, from one person to another and transmitted by airborne you can get sick if you breathe into the air that carries infectious bacteria in air particles, vector-borne if you are stunk by the insect that the bacteria and vehicle-borne if you are eating food or carrying the materials contaminated by the bacteria.

Infectious diseases share the common symptoms of fever, diarrhea, muscle aches, coughing, fatigue similar to those of influenza. Other symptoms are totally depending on the types of organisms including bacteria, and viruses.

Most cases of bacterial invasion are met with the first line of immune white blood cells. In the active division of bacteria in the acute phase of infectious, the immune response activated the production of the proinflammatory cytokine to the site of infection with an aim to kill off all bacteria.

In other words, if you kiss, or are coughed or sneezed on by an infectious person, you are at risk of developing the same infectious disease.

A viral infection is a disease caused by the successful entering and multiplying of a virus in the body.

Anti-viral effects are an act of certain substances to cause the destruction of a virus.

In the acute phase of viral infection, depending on the type of viruses, the viruses after entering the body start to attack the specific host cells. The cold and flu virus will attack the cells in the respiratory system and the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), which causes AIDS, will attack the white blood cells of the immune system,

The viral infection o\has been known to carry over some different stage, after successfully attaching to the host cell, the virus to release its mRNA into the host cell, leading to the recruit of the host cell's enzymes to accelerate the viral multiplying, then breaking free from the host cell to start the cycle all over again.

According to the statistic provided by the World Health Organization, 3 infectious diseases were ranked in the top ten causes of death worldwide in 2016.

More precisely, lower respiratory infections, diarrheal diseases, and tuberculosis induced 3.0 million, 1.4 million, and 1.3 million deaths, respectively.

Devil's Club is a large shrub, genus Oplopanax, belonging to the family Aralioideae, native to the cool moist forests of western North America.

The herb has been used in traditional and herbal medicine as Adaptogen, Antipyretic, Pain Reliever, Antitussive, Antibacterial agent and to treat Arthritis, Diabetes, Colds, Cough, Sore throat, Chest congestion, Stomach pain, Constipation, Gall stones, Influenza, Cancer, etc.

On finding a potential compound for the prevention and treatment of infectious diseases, researchers at the University of British Columbia.compared the antiviral activity of 100 methanolic plant extracts.

The inner bark extract of Oplopanax horridus partially inhibited the respiratory syncytial virus compared to the complete inhibition of a Sambucus racemosa branch tip extract.

An extract of Ipomopsis aggregata demonstrated very good activity against parainfluenza virus type 3 compared to the lesser effectiveness of Oplopanax horridus.

A Lomatium dissectum root extract is more effective in the exertion of cytopathic effects of rotavirus compared to Oplopanax horridus.

Compared to Oplopanax horridus, the extracts prepared from Cardamine angulata, Conocephalum conicum, Lysichiton americanum, Polypodium glycyrrhiza, and Verbascum thapsus. exhibited antiviral activity against herpesvirus type 1.

Taken altogether, coltsfoot may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of viral infection, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Eyebright ( Euphrasia) Eye Drops for the Treatment of Catarrhal Conjunctivitis

By Kyle J. Norton

The eyes are a complex optical system that allows us to see by reacting to light.

There are many factors that can cause eye problems that disturb the vision including
* Severe, sudden eye pain
* Recurrent pain in or around the eye
* Persistent eye itching, burning, or a heavy discharge in the eyes
* Sudden change in vision
* Unusual, even painful, sensitivity to light or glare
* Swollen, and red eyes

Eye diseases may induce symptoms of hazy, blurred, or double vision, seeing flashes of light or sudden bright floating spots, seeing rainbows or halos around lights, severe onset of floaters.

Most cases of eye inflammation are caused by an infection by viruses or bacteria,

Treatment of eye inflammation is totally depending on which parts of the eye are affected.  The condition has been found to progress to a severe form if untreated.

Uveitis is a form of eye inflammation that affects the middle layer of tissue in the eyewall (uvea), inducing symptoms of eye redness, pain, and blurred vision. The condition can affect one or both eyes

Pink eye  or conjunctivitis is the inflammation or infection of the transparent membrane that lines your eyelid and eyeball

Conjunctivitis is most caused by commonly caused by a bacterial or viral infection, an allergic reaction, particularly in babies with an incompletely opened tear duct.

Most common symptoms of conjunctivitis are redness in one or both eyes, itchiness in one or both eyes, a gritty feeling in one or both eyes, a discharge in one or both eyes and tearing

On finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of eye diseases, scientists examined the efficacy of eye drops made from Euphrasia rostkoviana Hayne on patients with catarrhal conjunctivitis.

Eyebright is one of the species of flowering plants, genus Euphrasia, belonging to the family Orobanchaceae, native to Europe.

The plant has been used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat eye infection and to relieve inflammation caused by colds, coughs, sinus infections, sore throats, and hay fever.

The prospective, open-label, one-armed, multicentered, multinational cohort trial conducted by the Witwatersrand University included 12 experienced anthroposophical general practitioners and ophthalmologists in Germany and Switzerland and patients who were treated by one drop of Euphrasia single-dose eye drops 1-5 times a day.

According to the differentiation of all symptoms that were given for the right or left eye separately, the eye drop showed a complete recovery in 53 patients (81.5%) and a clear improvement in 11 patients (17.0%).

However, there was a slight worsening in 1 patient who could only be determined in the second week of treatment (1.5%).

No serious adverse events were observed during the entire trial.

The efficacy and tolerability were evaluated by the patients and doctors as "good" to "very good" in more than 85%.

Based on the results, researchers suggest, "Euphrasia single-dose eye drops can effectively and safely be used for various conjunctival conditions by general practitioners and ophthalmologists. A dosage of one drop three times a day seems to be the generally prescribed dosage".

Taken altogether, Eyebright may be considered a remedy for the treatment of catarrhal conjunctivitis, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Devil's Club (Oplopanax horridus) Processes Anti Diabetes Effects in Vitro and Vivo

By Kyle J. Norton

Diabetes is a chronic condition caused by insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream to regulate the glucose.

In other words, diabetes occurs when cells in the pancreas dying off or receptor sites clogged up by fat and cholesterol. In some cases, diabetes is also caused by allergic reactions of cells in the immune system.

Most common types of diabetes are
* Type 1 diabetes, also known as juvenile diabetes or insulin-dependent diabetes, the most common form diabetes found in children is a condition in which the pancreas does not produce any insulin. The most common form of type 1 diabetes is caused by genetic mutation and some viruses.

* Type 2 diabetes is a medical condition characterized by insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream to regulate the glucose due to either cell in pancreas dying off or receptor sites clogged up by fat and cholesterol.

* Gestational diabetes is a form of diabetes that can occur during pregnancy, affecting between 3% and 20% of pregnant women.

* Latent autoimmune diabetes in adults (LADA), similar to type 1 diabetes, is a slow-progressing form of autoimmune diabetes. The disease is caused by the pancreas inability to produce enough insulin, because of slowly die-off of insulin-producing cells in the pancreas.

LADA is also known as type 1.5 diabetes because the disease has characteristics of both type 1 (autoimmune in nature) and type 2 diabetes.

Therefore, LADA shares the same risk factors and symptoms similar to those types 1 and 2 diabetes.

Hyperglycemia, a medical condition of abnormally high blood glucose, is a major concern, in people with both type 1 and type 2 diabetes.

Most cases of hyperglycemia occurred in patients who do not manage their diabetes properly.

On finding a natural and potential compound for the treatment of chronic low-grade inflammatory diseases, researchers examined the anti-diabetic activity of ginsenoside Rb(3) found in Devil's club in a model of alloxan-induced diabetic mice.

The study included alloxan-induced diabetic mice that were treated with ginsenoside Rb(3) for 2 weeks at doses of 5 mg/kg, 15 mg/kg and 25 mg/kg.

According to the results of the experiment
In vivo
* After 2 weeks of treatment of ginsenoside Rb(3), the fasting blood glucose levels of DG 15 and DG 25 were respectively reduced by 36.70% and 37.50% compared to the control group.

* At a dose of 25 mg/kg, oral glucose tolerance was significantly improved compared to the control group (P < 0.05).

*Furthermore, The AUC decreased by 34.47% (from 2442 ± 291 mmol·min/L to 1600 ± 109 mmol·min/L). Both food intake and water intake were remarkably lowered without alternating the bodyweight of diabetic mice.

* More importantly, the injury of the pancreas was repaired by the administration of ginsenoside Rb(3).

In vitro
* At the concentrations of 100 and 200 µM, ginsenoside Rb(3) increased glucose consumption in C2C12 myotubes by 76.83% and 97.20%, respectively, compared to the control group.

Collectively, researchers wrote, " our results showed that ginsenoside Rb(3) reduced fasting blood glucose level, food intake, water intake, improved oral glucose tolerance, and repaired injured pancreas tissues of alloxan-induced diabetic mice".

Taken altogether, Devil's club may be considered a remedy for the treatment of diabetes, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Oleanolic Acid, Processes Anti-Gastric Cancer In Vitro

By Kyle J. Norton

The stomach located between the esophagus and the small intestine is a muscular, hollow and important organ of the digestive tract.

Gastric/Stomach cancer is a chronic condition characterized by irregular cell growth in the tissues of the stomach.

Most cases of gastric cancer start in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of stomach tissue.
Due to the small size at the early stage, gastric cancer is asymptomatic.

However, at the later stage, after penetrating into the deeper layers of the stomach, the cancer cell may travel a distance away to infect other healthy tissues and organs, leading to secondary metastasis.

At this stage, most patients with gastric cancer may experience symptoms of severe abdominal pain caused by the suppressing of the oversize tumor on the nerve cells, or vague discomfort in the abdomen, usually above the navel, particularly heartburn and indigestion, accompanied by general symptoms shared with other types of cancer.

According to the statistics provided by the American Cancer Society, in 2019, approximately, 27,510 cases of stomach cancer will be diagnosed (17,230 in men and 10,280 in women) and 11,140 people will die from gastric cancer (6,800 men and 4,340 women).

Overall, the 5-year survival rate for people with gastric cancer is 31%. Cancer diagnosed at the localized stage have a 5 years survival rate of 67%.

Common sites metastases of gastric cancer are liver (48%), peritoneum (32%), lung (15%), and bone (12%).

The most common causative risk factor of gastric cancer is infection with a common bacteria, H. pylori, which were found to cause ulcers and Inflammatory gastritis,.

Oleanolic acid is a phytochemical in the subclass of Triterpenoid, belonging to the group of Terpenes found abundantly in honey mesquite, garlic, java apple, clove, etc.

On finding a potential plant that processes anti-cancer activity researchers examined the effect of a
synergism of cisplatin-oleanolic acid on colon cancer.

According to the results of the analysis of cancer cell membrane (CM) decorated calcium carbonate (CC) hybrid nanoparticles (HN) for the co-delivery of cisplatin (CDDP) and oleanolic acid (OA),
* The -prepared DDS was core-shell structured and well-dispersed nanoparticles with a size around 100 nm.

* The HN/CDDP/OA showed high stability and biocompatibility with pH-responsive drug release.

* The CM modification in HN also demonstrated a highly elevated tumor-homing nature than barely decorated calcium carbonate (CC).
* HN/CDDP/OA in the treatment of gastric cancer (MGC-803 cell line) showed better performance than mono systems with enhanced apoptosis and capable of reversing multidrug resistance (MDR) of cancer cells.

Taken altogether, Oleanolic acid may be considered a remedy or the prevention and treatment of gastric cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Ursolic acid Protects Diabetes Against Kidney Injury in Vivo

By Kyle J. Norton

Diabetic kidney disease is a type of kidney disease caused by diabetes.
Kidneys, a pair of the bean-shaped organ in the human body not only filter out blood but also balances the body fluids by eliminating them and removes them through urinary secretion.

Additionally, the kidney accompanied by the liver and skin form also detoxes the toxins in the body.

Kidney disease is a medical condition associated with a gradually reduced function of the kidney.

Renal protection is a strategy that protects the kidney against injury or damage. In other words, renal protection is a process that maintains the function of the kidneys.

The most common kidney injury is associated with scar tissues forming in the kidneys.

Renal fibrosis is a condition of abnormal healing of the kidney tissues after injury, caused by the formation of scars in the kidney.

Renal scarring has been found to gradually reduced the renal function, leading to end-stage renal failure, depending on the severity and the area of scarring forming.

Patients at the end stage of renal failure may require dialysis or kidney transplantation.

Depending on the severity of renal damage, patients may experience symptoms of decreased urine output, fluid retention, that lead to swelling in the legs, ankles or feet, fatigue, nausea, and physical weakness

Ursolic acid is a phytochemical in the subclass of Triterpenoid, belongings to the group of Terpenes found abundantly in apples, basil, bilberries, cranberries, peppermint, lavender, oregano, hawthorn, prunes., etc.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of kidney diseases, researchers examined the effects of ursolic acid (UA) mitigating renal inflammation, oxidative stress, and fibrosis.

The study included db/db mice that were divided randomly into a diabetic nephropathy (DN) group and a UA treatment group.

According to the analysis,
* UA treatment effectively reduced the body weights and blood glucose levels of db/db mice (p<0.05) as well as the urinary albumin/creatinine ratio (p<0.05).

* UA significantly improved the renal tissue lesions and glomerulosclerosis index of the db/db mice.after treatment (p<0.01).

* UA treatment also significantly lower expression levels of proteins associated with kidney injury and pro-inflammatory cytokines IL-1β and IL-18 in renal tissues, compared to the DN group.

In other words, researchers said, "UA alleviated renal damage in type 2 diabetic db/db mice by downregulating proteins in the ARAP1/AT1R signaling pathway to inhibit extracellular matrix accumulation, renal inflammation, fibrosis, and oxidative stress.".

Taken altogether, ursolic acid may be considered adjunct therapies in the treatment of diabetic kidney injury, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of ursolic acid in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Pinto beans (Phaseolus) Promotes Gastrointestinal Digestion

By Kyle J. Norton

The digestive system consists of the gastrointestinal tract and other parts of the accessory organs of digestion including the tongue, salivary glands, pancreas, liver, and gallbladder), involved in the function of breaking down food into smaller and smaller components then absorbed before passing them as nutrients and fluids to the body.

In other words, the digestive system includes gastrointestinal tract (GI), liver, pancreas, and gallbladder with a healthy function of breaking down food into nutrients and fluids for the body's need.

Gastrointestinal diseases are the conditions of the digestive system associated with the disorders involving the gastrointestinal tract, including the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, and rectum.

The most common causes of gastrointestinal diseases are a bacterial or viral infection, inflammation, poor circulation of the intestines, muscle dysfunction, gallstones, stress, particularly long-term use of anti-inflammatory drugs. However, gut microbiota, a community of microorganisms living in the gastrointestinal tract has been found to induce a significant effect on digestive health if imbalanced,

Digestion is a process of the digestive system by breaking out down food after intake for nutrients through mechanical and enzymatic action.

Indigestion, on the other hand, is symptoms of another digestive disease, including GERD. Most cases of indigestion not caused by underlying diseases can be resolved quickly.

People with indigestion experience symptoms differently. Some may feel the symptoms of occasionally while others may feel often and daily.

There are a number of risk factors associated with digestive disorders including bacterial and/or viral infection, inflammation, lactase deficiency, anti-inflammatory drugs and certain conditions such as ruptured or perforated organs, muscle dysfunction, gallstones.

However, some researchers suggested that there is a strong correlation between the risk of digestive disorders in obese patients.

Conventional medicine used for the treatment of gastrointestinal disorders is depending on the disease that triggers the disorder.such as antibiotics for bacterial infection, painkillers for stomach pain.

On finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of digestive diseases, scientists examined the effects of angiotensin I-converting enzyme (ACE)-inhibitory peptides released from thermally treated Phaseolus vulgaris (pinto) in gastrointestinal digestion.

Where Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors play a critical role to widen or dilate blood vessels.

Pinto bean is also known as common bean, genus Phaseolus and the family Fabaceae. The legume has a mottled appearance of darker reddish-brown spots on a lighter brownish beige background, thus appearing painted or spotted.

According to tested analysis,
* The <3 kDa fraction of the post pancreatic sample showed high ACE-inhibitory activity (IC50 = 105.6 ± 2.1 μg of peptides/mL).

* Three fractions isolated from the peptides, showed the highest response for the ACE-inhibitory activity.

More precisely, the chemical compounds that exerted the ACE-inhibitory activity were hydrophobic amino acid, (iso)leucine or phenylalanine, or proline.

Taken altogether, pinto beans as be considered ACE inhibitors for the improvement of gastrointestinal digestion, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
