Lycopene Reduces Risk and Treatment of Kidney Cancer in Vivo

By Kyle J. Norton

Lycopene is a phytochemical found in tomato in the class of carotenoid, a natural pigment with no vitamin A activity found abundantly in tomatoes and other red fruits and vegetables, such as red carrots, watermelons, and papayas,

Tomatoes provide about 80% of the lycopene in the world diet. In plants, lycopene protects the host against excessive photodamage and perform various functions in photosynthesis.

On finding a potent compound for the treatment of kidney cancer, researchers examined the effects of lycopene on renal cell carcinoma (RCC) associated with frequent upper urinary tract cancer in humans, accounting for 80-85% of malignant renal tumors.

The study included  10 weeks old Eker rat, the unique animal model to study RCC induced spontaneous renal tumors with a genetic mutation of TSC2 received 0, 100 or 200mg/kg of lycopene as part of their daily diet for 18 months.

According to the tested analysis associated with tumors counted measured in individual kidneys, lycopene treated group showed a decrease of 94% of tumor counts compared to 65% in the control group.

The mean numbers of renal carcinomas in the treated group were statistically significantly decreased compared to untreated controls.

Furthermore, the decrease of tumor counts in the lycopene was linearly depending on the concentration of the phytochemical observed by the increase of the supplement from 0 to 200 mg/kg.

Moreover, compared to control rats fed an only basal diet with a greater length of tumors (23.98 mm)compared to rats fed lycopene supplement with the length of 12.90 mm and 11.07 mm at the concentration 0 to 200mg/kg respectively.

The results of this efficacy were attributed to lycopene in the promotion of antibodies against proteins mTOR associated with cell proliferation and cancer progression and phospho-S6 protein associated with predicts unfavorable clinical survival and epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) in the promotion of solid tumor growth.

Collectively, researchers said, "dietary supplementation with lycopene attenuates the development of renal cell cancers in the predisposed TSC2 mutant Eker rat model:,

Taken altogether, lycopene found in tomato may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of kidney cancer pending on the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of lycopene in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Herbal Turmeric Inhibits Blood Toxicity and Normalizes High Blood Pressure (Hypertension)

By Kyle J. Norton

Hypertension is a condition characterized by abnormally high blood pressure. The condition is also one of the members of the cluster of metabolic syndrome associated with increased risk of heart disease and diabetes.

Blood pressure is the force of blood against the walls of blood vessels (known as arteries). In other words, blood pressure is a measure of how hard your heart works.

The results of blood pressure are measured by the reading systolic and diastolic number.

Where the systolic number is the measure of the pressure when your heart contracts and pushes out the blood, and, the diastolic number is the measure of when your heart relaxes between beats.

High blood pressure means raising the pressure in your heart. If it stays high over time it can damage the body in many ways.

According to the statistics provided by the American Heart Association, approximately 103 million U.S. adults have high blood pressure.

However, according to recent statistics, nearly half of all adults in the United States have the conditions.

Blood pressure medications have undoubtedly prevented many deaths from heart disease in the past 30 years, but they have many side effects such as damaging the kidney.

If you can control your diet, such as making changes to lifestyle, maintaining ideal weight and diet with low salt, you could do just fine without the drugs.

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belongings to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

With an aim to find a potential ingredient for the treatment of high blood pressure, scientists launched an investigation to determine whether curry intake reduces blood levels of heavy metals and hypertension (HTN) using Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2013 data.

In a total of 1,350 study subjects, patients were divided into either curry intake group with the consumption of a curry dish more than once a month over the previous year, or a non-curry intake group (n = 747).

According to the tested analysis, the curry intake group showed significantly lower heavy metal blood concentrations (Pb, Hg, and Cd)

The levels of blood concentrations of heavy metals associated with the induction of hypertension were significantly lower compared to the placebo.

The results of logistic regression analysis confirmed the association between blood heavy metal levels and HTN.

Compared to the non-curry intake group, after adjusting for age, sex, lifetime smoking, and body mass index, the odds ratio of HTN were significant in the non-curry intake group.

In other words, turmeric has a potential effect on reducing high blood pressure caused by heavy metals in the blood.

In order to obtain turmeric antihypertensive activity, researchers examined the effect of oral curcumin supplementation on patients suffering from relapsing or refractory lupus nephritis.

The study involved a total of 24 patients with relapsing or refractory biopsy-proven lupus nephritis randomized into 2 groups (trial [n = 12] and control [n = 12] groups).

Patients in the trial group received 1 capsule for 3 months in each meal, containing 500 mg turmeric, of which 22.1 mg was the active ingredient curcumin (3 capsules daily). The control group received 3 capsules (1 with each meal) for the same period.

Patients in the trial group not only showed a significant decrease in proteinuria and hematuria, but also the decreased in the levels of systolic blood pressure compared to the pre-treatment results in1, 2, and 3 months.

Futhermore, there was no adverse effect in the trial group.

Based on the findings, Dr. Khajehdehi P, the lead scientist wrote, "Short-term turmeric supplementation can decrease proteinuria, hematuria, and systolic blood pressure in patients suffering from relapsing or refractory lupus nephritis and can be used as an adjuvant safe therapy for such patients".

Taken altogether, turmeric processed a high amount of bioactive compound curcumin may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of hypertension, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Herbal Ashwagandha Protects the Neurons Against Neurotoxicity

By Kyle J. Norton

The central nervous system is a part of the nervous system of the brain and spinal cord with the function of integrates information it receives from for the entire nervous system, and control all the workings of the body.

A neurotoxicity is a form of toxicity that affects the structure or function of the central and/or peripheral nervous system, leading to damage to neurons and brain cells of the central nervous system.

In some cases, neurotoxicity can induce unpleasant symptoms of weakness in the limbs. altered sensation, tingling, and numbness in the limbs, headache, and loss of certain types of acute cognitive function.

However, in severe cases, neurotoxicity can cause vision loss, complete loss of memory and reduced cognitive function.

Some patients with neurotoxicity also experience uncontrollable obsessive and/or compulsive behavior and sexual dysfunction.

The blood-brain barrier (BBB) is composed of a network of vessels that form a structural and chemical barrier to protect the neuron's integrity and viability between the brain and systemic circulation.

BBB permeability is the functions of neurons that involve the extracellular matrix, and non-neuronal cells including astrocytes, pericytes, and vascular endothelial cells,... to protect the brain from exposure peripheral organs that toxic to neurons.

BBB dysfunction has been found to be induced by neuronal dysfunction, neuroinflammation, and neurodegeneration.

BBB permeability alternation can be caused by brain injury, ischemic stroke, multiple sclerosis (MS), Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, and major depression, leading to significant neuronal dysfunction.

Ashwagandha also is known as Withania somnifera is a nightshade plant in the genus of Withania, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to the dry parts of India, North Africa, Middle East, and the Mediterranean.

The herbal medicine has been considered as Indian ginseng and used in Ayurvedic medicine over 3000 years to treat tumors and tubercular glands, carbuncles, memory loss, and ulcers and considered as anti-stress, cognition-facilitating, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging herbal medicine.

On finding a potent compound that processes the neuroprotective effect, researchers examined the effects of the blood-brain barrier permeability of withanamides in W.somnifera fruit extract in a mice model.

In vitro, withanamides, the primary active constituents in W.somnifera fruit extract exhibited neuroprotective effects against β-amyloid-induced cytotoxicity in neuronal cell culture.

According to the tested assays, the effect of withanamides was attributed to four major withanamides isolated from W.somnifera fruit extract found in the brain and blood of mice administered with W.somnifera extract.

In other words, certain chemical constituents can pass through the blood-brain barrier to protect the brain against neuron deteriorate that lead to neurons' dysfunction.

More precisely, W.somnifera fruit extract may be used as a preventive or therapeutic botanical drug for stress-induced neurological disorders.

Taken altogether, Ashwagandha may be considered a functional herb for neurological diseases including Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, pending to the result of larger sample size and multicenter study

Lycopene Protects the Lung Against Injury

By Kyle J. Norton

The lungs are a pair of spongy, air-filled organs located on either side of the chest with the main function to process of gas exchange during breathing.

In other words, lung transfers life-giving oxygen into the blood supply and removes carbon dioxide produced by cells metabolism from the blood.

The lung is also the first-line defense against inhaled particles and prevent the circulation of emboli such as blood clot (thrombus), a fat globule (fat embolism), a bubble of air or other gas (gas embolism), or foreign material.

The lung formed part of the circulatory system plays an essential and unique role in taking oxygen to the blood and exhaling carbon dioxide from the blood.

Additonally, the lung also processes other ability in protecting our body against disease, including balancing the pH levels, the lung protects the body against the accumulation of too much carbon dioxide. High levels of carbon dioxide are known to induce acidity in the body.

Any part of the lung injury can reduce the lung function, leading to either obstructive or restrictive lung diseases or mixed lung disease, depending on a person's breathing.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of lung disease researchers examined the protective effects of Sarcandra glabra combined with lycopene against lung injury (ALI) in an animal model.

Administration of Sarcandra glabra combined with lycopene in rats induced acute injury included by LPS in the study showed a significant effect on improving anti-oxidative activities.

Furthermore, the combination also decreased the expression of pro-inflammatory proteins including TNF-α and IL-6, by suppressing the activations of factors that cause the production of cytokines.

Additionally, abnormal metabolism induced by LPS was also reversed by the injection of the combination.

Based on the findings, researchers said, " this integrated study revealed that Sarcandra glabra combined with lycopene had great potential in protecting rats from LPS-induced ALI, which would be helpful to guide the clinical medication".

Taken altogether, lycopene used alone or combined with Sarcandra glabra may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of acute lung injury, pending on the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of lycopene in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Common Fig or Fig (Ficus carica), the Anti-Cardiovascular Diseases Whole Food

By Kyle J. Norton

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a group of conditions associated with the heart and blood vessels.

The heart formed part of the circulatory system is a muscular organ that pumps blood through the blood vessels to nourish the body tissues and organs.

Most cases of heart dysfunction are associated with the reduced function of the heart muscle, leading to reduce blood flow that facilitates heart failure and the backup of blood into the lungs or rest of the body.

Heart disease is a class of diseases associated with interruption of blood flow in the blood vessel or damage of the heart tissue, including coronary artery diseases (CAD) such as angina and myocardial infarction.

According to the statistics provided by the US government, heart disease is a leading cause of death in the US. Over 600,000 died of heart disease, every year including 370,000 people died of coronary heart disease (CHD), accounting for 1 in 4 deaths.

Believe it or not, women are 4 times more likely to die from heart disease than breast cancer and 2/3 of women are not aware of heart disease is such a risk for them, according to the Jean Hailes for Women Health in the article cardiovascular health.

The most common symptoms of heart disease are poor appetite, weight loss, shortness of breath, sudden collapse, blood clots and stunted growth found in children.

Coronary heart disease (CHD) is the most common type of heart disease, that kills over 370,000 people annually.

The causes of cardiovascular diseases are associated with the accumulation of plaques in the arteries, impeding the blood flow which carries the nutrients and oxygen to the heart, causing damage to the heart tissue and reduced function of the arteries.

In other words, high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, smoking, diabetes, weight, depression and family history associated with the early onset of plaques accumulated and impeding function of the arteries are the prevalent risk factors of cardiovascular diseases.

Many people know that tobacco use is associated with an increased risk of bladder cancer, but most of them do not know that smoking is one of the leading causes of cardiovascular diseases.

Fig is a species of F. Carica, belonging to the family Moraceae. It is a deciduous shrub, native to Southeast Asia. The tree can grow to a height of 33 ft and the fruit can be as large as 2.0 inches.

On finding a natural whole food for the treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress, researchers examined the cardioprotective effects of the aqueous extracts of Cydonia oblonga Mill. fruit (ACO) and Ficus carica L. fruit (AFC) against DOX-induced cardiotoxicity.

In cardiomyocytes toxicity that was induced in male Sprague Dawley rats by intraperitoneal (ip) injections of 2.5 mg/kg DOX 3 times per week for a period of 2 weeks induced heart failure,

* The injection of the extracts showed a strong effect on mitochondrial oxidative stress that inhibits the damage the mitochondria and dysfunction.

More precisely, ACO and AFC ameliorated mitochondrial dysfunction induced by the DOX3 in the isolated mitochondria and prevented mitochondrial reactive oxygen species formation.

* ACO and AFC ameliorated mitochondrial dysfunction in the isolated mitochondria and prevented mitochondrial reactive oxygen species formation associated with membrane lipid peroxidation, mitochondrial swelling, mitochondrial membrane potential collapse (%ΔΨm), and cytochrome c release.

* The antioxidant enzymes produced by the host such as glutathione levels and succinate dehydrogenase activity were significantly increased by the extracts.

In other words, ACO and AFC have beneficial effects against DOX cardiotoxicity which mediated by attenuating mitochondrial dysfunction

Based on the results, researchers wrote, " (...The results) can be suggested that quince and fig may increase the therapeutic index of DOX".

Taken altogether, common fig may be considered a natural anti-CVD, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of SFN in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Cranberry in the Promotion of Digestive Health

By Kyle J. Norton

The digestive system included the gastrointestinal tract, the liver, pancreas, and gallbladder play a critical role to maintain the body normal function by providing nutrients and fluids to the body and remove waste through the secretary system.

Digestion is a process of the digestive system by breaking down food for nutrients through mechanical and enzymatic action.

Gut Microbiota is a community of microorganisms living in the gastrointestinal tract.

Under normal conditions, gut microbiota plays a critical role in overall health, including improving the absorption of the dietary nutrients of the digestive system,  protecting the body against xenobiotics and drug toxicity through facilitating the excretion.

Futhermore, the gut microbiota also involved in the maintenance of the structural integrity of the gut mucosal barrier, gut microbiota enhances the epithelial cells with a function to protect the intestine against invasive pathogens and ensure the function of intestinal in nutrients adsorption.

In immunomodulation, gut microbiota interacts with the immune system against inflammatory immune disorders and inhibits the risk of gastrointestinal diseases and non-gastrointestinal diseases caused by overexpression of bad bacteria.

However, imbalanced of the ratio of gut microbiota may have a negative on human health and diseases.

Dr. Yu-Jie Zhang wrote, "Gut bacteria are an important component of the microbiota ecosystem in the human gut, which is colonized by 1014 microbes, ten times more than the human cells. Gut bacteria play an important role in human health, such as supplying essential nutrients, synthesizing vitamin K, aiding in the digestion of cellulose, and promoting angiogenesis and enteric nerve function".

And, "However, they can also be potentially harmful due to the change of their composition when the gut ecosystem undergoes abnormal changes in the light of the use of antibiotics, illness, stress, aging, bad dietary habits, and lifestyle. Dysbiosis of the gut bacteria communities can cause many chronic diseases, such as inflammatory bowel disease, obesity, cancer, and autism".

Cranberry is an evergreen dwarf shrub, genus Vaccinium, belongings to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern America and Southern Asia. Because of its health benefits, cranberry has been cultivated in some parts of the world for commercial profit and used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat wounds, urinary disorders, diarrhea, diabetes, stomach ailments, and liver problems.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of digestive health, researchers examined the effect of Vaccinium berry fruit in modulating gut microbiota function.

According to the tested differentiation, cranberry anthocyanidins only interfered with the colonization of the gut by Escherichia coli in vitro but also attenuated gut barrier dysfunction caused by dietary insults in vivo.

The efficacy of cranberry anthocyanidins in the promotion of gut microbiota in the flavor of the good bacterias was attributed by the synergic activity between these proanthocyanidins, other cranberry components such as isoprenoids and xyloglucans.

Futhermore, cranberry constituents and their bioactive catabolites also have a strong effect on bacterial adhesion, coaggregation, and biofilm formation that may contribute clinical benefits on gastrointestinal and urinary tract infections,

Additionally, cranberry constituents and their bioactive catabolites also processed strong anti-inflammatory actions by mediating the gut microbiome.

Taken altogether, cranberry may be considered a remedy for the improvement of the digestive health, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Lycopene Protects the Bone Density Against Osteoporosis (Osteoblastogenesis)

By Kyle J. Norton

Osteoblastogenesis are many factors associated with bone remodeling. In other words, osteoblastogenesis promotes an anabolic state (6 anabolic ingredients) of bone metabolism that protects the bone density against the bone reabsorption.

Osteoporosis is a chronic condition characterized by the thinning of bone and bone tissues due to the loss of bone density over time.

The condition is a widespread degenerative disease of skeletal joints and often associated with senescence invertebrates due to excessive or abnormal mechanical loading of weight-bearing joints, arising from heavy long-term use or specific injuries.

Patients with osteoporosis may experience symptoms of lower back pain, as a result of the fractured or collapsed vertebra, loss of height over time, a stooped posture, easy bone fracture, neck pain, and psychological symptoms of depression.

In women, osteoporosis may also induce psychosomatic, gastrointestinal and swelling and vasomotor symptoms, especially depressive symptom.

Most common complications of untreated osteoporosis are
* Bone fracture
Bone fracture is one of the most serious complications of osteoporosis, due to loss of bone mineral density. Even minimum mechanical stress can easily head for fracture.

* Chronic pain
Chronic pain is often induced poor quality of life in patients with osteoporosis, affecting daily living and functional status, in some cases, causing mental health, such as anxiety and depression to certain patients.

* Bone Deformity
Deformity, dysmorphism, or dysmorphic feature is a major abnormality in the shape..

Lycopene is a phytochemical in the class of carotenoid, a natural pigment with no vitamin A activity found abundantly in tomatoes and other red fruits and vegetables, such as red carrots, watermelons, and papayas,

Tomatoes provide about 80% of the lycopene in the world diet. In plants, lycopene protects the host against excessive photodamage and perform various functions in photosynthesis.

With an aim to find a potential phytochemical to protect the bone mineral density, researchers examined the bone metabolism of lycopene.

According to the tested differentiation
* Lycopene after the ingestion of lycopene-containing products such as tomato inhibited the bone oxidative-stress by enhancing the production of osteoblasts associated with the improvement of bone health

In other words, lycopene protected the bone density by inhibiting the bone reabsorption and increasing forming of new bone cells.

* Lycopene not only did not affect cell density/survival; but also protected the bone by decreasing the calcium-phosphate resorption.

* Lycopene also acted as NF-kB signaling inhibitors to inhibit osteoclast formation and bone resorptive activity against the bone formation.

Based on the findings, lycopene protects bone mineral density by stimulating osteoblastogenesis.

Researchers after taking into account of co and confounders said, "This information might be relevant for the prevention and delay in the progression of osteolytic bone conditions".

Taken altogether, lycopene found in tomato may be considered supplements for the promotion of osteoblastogenesis,  pending on the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of lycopene in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
