Legume Protects the Liver Cells Against the Rick of Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease

By Kyle J. Norton

The liver is the largest internal organ located in the upper right portion of the abdomen, beneath your diaphragm and above your stomach.

The liver not only plays a critical role to filter the blood coming from the intestine before passing them to other parts of the body but also protects our body against toxin by detoxifying chemicals and metabolizes drugs.

Furthermore, the liver produces bile that not only aids the digestive function in food absorption but also builds strong cell membranes, produces vitamin D and steroid hormone.

Liver disease in most cases is linked to alcohol or drugs. In fact, it can be caused by a variety of factors and affecting everyone from infants to older adults, including infected viri such as hepatitis A, B, C, and medication overloaded.

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is one of the major causes of cirrhosis and liver cancer.

Nonalcoholic liver disease is a chronic condition caused by fat accumulated over time in the liver, affecting people who drink little to no alcohol.

In other words, if you have fat that makes up over 5% of the liver, you are considered to have fatty liver disease.

Nonalcoholic liver disease can be classified into the noninflammatory fatty liver and inflammatory liver steatohepatitis.

According to world statistics, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is normally known as a disease of the Western world(2). However, due to the economic prosperity of Southeast Asian(3), the disease also was found in a large population in the cities, causing concerns of many scientists in the region(4)(6).

According to the joint assessment of the prevalence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and risk factors for advanced fibrosis and mortality in the US, led by the Stanford University School of Medicine, "The prevalence of NAFLD in the United States (U.S.) has risen from 18% in 1988–1991 to 31% in 2011–2012. Estimates of NAFLD prevalence for adults in Western countries are 20–30%, with much higher prevalence in adults with obesity (80–90%), diabetes (30–50%), and hyperlipidemia (90%)"(5).

Among the more affluent regions of China, the prevalence rate of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is approximately 15%(6). The number may decrease substantially if the poor rural populations where obesity is non-existence are also taking into account(7).

The exact causes of NAFLD aren't well understood. Some researchers suggested that certain risk factors such as long-term use of certain medications(8), genetic preposition(8), insulin resistance(8), high cholesterol(8) and triglycerides(8) in the blood, polycystic ovary syndrome(8), metabolic syndrome(8), obesity(8), and type 2 diabetes(8) are associated with the onset of the disease.

A legume is a plant in the family Fabaceae that fruit or seed of a plant.
On finding a potent ingredient for the treatment of liver diseases, researchers investigated the impact of legume intake, including green bean against the risk of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD.

According to the results of the valid and reliable food frequency questionnaire returned by 169 newly diagnosed patients with NAFLD and 803 controls participated in the study, greater intake of green peas was associated with a lower risk of NAFLD.

According to the adjusted models for higher dietary intake of legumes, 0.73 (0.64-0.84), 0.61 (0.46-0.78), and 0.35 (0.17-0.74), respectively.

In other words, legumes showed the highest effect compared to those of individual legume such as lentils, and beans.

Taken altogether, legume may be considered functional veggies for the prevention and treatment of NAFLD,  pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Ashwagandha Improves Male Steroid Hormones Levels in Aging Male

By Kyle J. Norton

Steroid hormones, secreted by the adrenal cortex, testes, and ovaries and during pregnancy by the placenta refers to any group of hormones associated with steroids.

All steroid hormones are produced by cholesterol, a way substance produced by the liver or from outside sources such as dietary fat.

Steroid hormones can be classified into two classes:
* Corticosteroids produced in the adrenal cortex play a critical role in providing relief for inflamed areas of the body that cause symptoms of swelling, redness, itching, and allergic reactions.

* Sex steroid hormones interacted with androgen or estrogen receptors in men and women respectively, play an essential role in reproduction, differentiation, development, cell proliferation, apoptosis, inflammation, metabolism, homeostasis, and brain function.

In females, estrogens and progestins are synthesized and secreted principally by maturing ovarian follicles, corpora lutea and during pregnancy, the placenta. The dominant estrogen secreted is E2.

In the male, testosterone secreted by the fetal testes that play a critical role to masculinize and defeminize brain structures, physiological processes, and behaviors.

The increase of aging is associated with the change of the levels of steroid hormones in the human body that is easily observed in the perturbed sleep-wake cycles and cognitive decline in the elderly.

Dr. K.G. Sorwell, the lead scientist wrote, "Using remote serial blood sampling we have found the circulating levels of DHEA sulfate, as well as oestradiol and testosterone, decline markedly in old monkeys".

And, "Furthermore, using real-time PCR, we have shown that genes associated with the conversion of DHEA to oestradiol and testosterone (e.g., 3BHSD, 17BHSD, and aromatase) are highly expressed in brain areas associated with cognition and behavior, including the hippocampus, prefrontal cortex, and amygdala".

Ashwagandha also is known as Withania somnifera is a nightshade plant in the genus of Withania, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to the dry parts of India, North Africa, Middle East, and the Mediterranean.

The herbal medicine has been considered as Indian ginseng and used in Ayurvedic medicine over 3000 years to treat tumors and tubercular glands, carbuncles, memory loss, and ulcers and considered as anti-stress, cognition-facilitating, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging herbal medicine.

On finding a potent compound which processes antiaging property, researchers examined the effects of Withania somnifera (Ashwagandha) on the promotion of youthful vigor, in enhancing muscle strength and endurance, and improving overall health in aging males.

The 16-week, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover study included overweight men aged 40-70 years, with mild fatigue, received either a placebo or an ashwagandha extract (Shoden beads, delivering 21 mg of withanolide glycosides a day) for 8 weeks.

According to the tested analysis of 57 participants enrolled, with 50 people completing the first 8-week period of the trial and 43 completing all 16 weeks,
* Withania somnifera (Ashwagandha) showed the Improvements in fatigue, vigor, and sexual and psychological well-being were over time.

* However, Ashwagandha intake group demonstrated an 18% greater increase in DHEA-S ( p = .005) and 14.7% greater increase in testosterone, compared to the placebo without affecting the levels of cortisol and estradiol.

In other words, Ashwagandha processes antiaging activity in males by improving the male steroid hormones associated with enhancing youthful vigor, muscle strength, and endurance.

Based on the findings, researchers said, " the intake of a standardized ashwagandha extract (Shoden beads) for 8 weeks was associated with increased levels of DHEA-S and testosterone, although no significant between-group differences were found in cortisol, estradiol, fatigue, vigor, or sexual well-being. Further studies with larger sample sizes are required to substantiate the current findings".

Taken altogether, Ashwagandha may be considered an antiaging functional herb in males, pending to the result of larger sample size and multicenter study

Herbal Ashwagandha Process Anti-Parkinson's disease Activity

By Kyle J. Norton

Dementia is a medical and neurodegenerative disease characterized by the loss of mental ability, that is severe enough to interfere with people's every life.

Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease (PD) are the most common types of dementia in aging people.

Dementia accounts for 5-8% of all people over the age of 65, and this number doubles every five years.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a type of dementia that affects the nerve cells associated with the production of dopamine in the brain, leading to muscle rigidity, tremors, and changes in speech and gait.

In other words, Parkinson's disease is a progressive neurological disorder that affects neurons in transmitting messages in controlling the movement.

In the very early stage of PD, patients may not experience any symptoms. However, Parkinson's disease symptoms gradually worsen as the condition progresses.

As of today, researchers do not know why the neurons in the brain in some people are susceptible to gradually break down or die while others do not even they have similar health conditions and from the same family.

Epidemiologically aging, gender, long-term exposure to certain toxic chemicals and genetic deposition are some of the prevalent factors involved in the increased risk of the disease.

On finding a potent compound for the prevention and treatment of neurological disorders, researchers examined the effects of Centella asiatica and Withania somnifera root extract consumption on Parkinson's disease in an animal model.

On 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP) induced Parkinson-like symptoms Balb/c mice, both ethanol extracts significant reduced the tested mice oxidative stress profile.

However, , the combination performed worse than either of the two individual constituents.

In other words, Withania somnifera and Centella asiatica treated individually showed a strong effect in reducing symptoms of Parkinson's disease comapred to the extract combination.

Based on the results, researchers said, " This effect of mixtures highlights the need for testing mixtures in supplements market using ethnomedicine. The necessity of comparing multiple groups in this study to get the most information from the experiments motivated us to design a ladder-like visualization to show comparison with different groups that we call complete comparison display (CCD)".

Taken altogether, Ashwagandha may be considered a functional herb for the prevention and treatment of Parkinson's disease symptoms, pending to the result of larger sample size and multicenter study

Turmeric Protects the Heart Valve Against the Risk of Cardiac Fibrosis

By Kyle J. Norton

Cardiac fibrosis is a medical condition caused by the abnormal thickening of the heart valves due to the inappropriate proliferation of cardiac fibroblasts.

In other words, cardiac fibrosis is a result of excess deposition of extracellular matrix associated with collagen enzymes, and glycoproteins involving the healing of the myocardial muscle.

According to the statistics, over 6 million people in the US suffer from heart failure, leading to reduce the function of the heart muscle to pump blood and remove waste from the body.

The most common cause of heart failure is associated with cardiac fibrosis, a scarring process that over time affects cardiac structure and function.

Therefore, preventing or reducing cardiac fibrosis progression, the risk of heart failure, and other cardiovascular diseases caused by scarring heart tissues can be reduced.

Conventionally, medications that target the renin-angiotensin system, transforming growth factor-beta, and endothelin showed to inhibit the progression of scarring in various stages of cardiac fibrosis development.

Dr. Armstrong AC, the lead scientist in the examination of the risk of cardiovascular disease and cardiac fibrosis in early cardiac dysfunction in type 1 diabetes.wrote, "Traditional CVD risk factors and elevated HbA1c levels are major factors related to early cardiac dysfunction in type 1 diabetes".

And, "Nonischemic myocardial scar, possibly as a marker of chronic exposure to known risk factors, may predict early cardiac dysfunction mediated by diffuse myocardial fibrosis as seen in diabetic cardiomyopathy".

In other words, older age, male sex, smoking history, obesity, higher blood pressure, lower HDL cholesterol, and higher mean HbA1c are some of the prevalent factors of CVD and myocardial fibrosis in patients with type 1 diabetes.

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belongings to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

On findings a potential compound for the treatment of heart disease, researchers examined the efficacy of curcumin anti-cardiac fibrosis potential.

According to the tested differentiation, Curcumin, SB431542 (a TGF-βR-Smad2 inhibitor) and SB203580 (a p38 inhibitor) showed a significant effect on the inhibition of the stimulation of pro-inflammatory cytokines (TGF-β1).

α-SMA and ColI associated with pathologic fibroblasts and cardiac fibrosis induced by the TGF-β1were also inhibited by the injection of curcumin and SB431542 and SB203580  via the inhibition of the genes that are regulated by TGF-beta.

Collectively, researchers said, " In conclusion, the results of the present study demonstrated that treatment with curcumin effectively suppresses TGF-β1-induced CF differentiation via Smad-2 and p38 signaling pathways. Thus, curcumin may be a potential therapeutic agent for the treatment of cardiac fibrosis".

Taken altogether, turmeric processed abundantly bioactive compound curcumin may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of cardia fibrosis, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Ashwagandha the Antiaging Herbal Medicine

By Kyle J. Norton

Skin aging is a natural process that can not be stopped. However, there are some people have younger-looking facial skin compared to their biological age.

The evidence of skin aging can be visible by increasing wrinkles and sagging skin.

Skin is the largest organ in the human body. The skin not only shields us against the invasion of foreigner pathogens but also serves as the third detoxed organ besides the liver and kidney.

Additionally, the skin also protects the skeletons and internal organs against the mechanical impacts and pressure, variations in temperature, micro-organisms, radiation, and chemicals.

However, when skin ages, it also reduces the function of the aforementioned protection, seen in the elderly.

Besides biological causes of skin aging, long-term exposure to sunlight, particularly UVB is one of the major factors associated with damages of elastin, leading to wrinkles, sagging skin that loses stability to rebound from the stretch.

According to the free radical theory of aging, free radical bombardment over time can cause oxidative damage to the enzymes, other protein, unsaturated fatty acid, phospholipids, DNA and RNA, leading widespread cell damage including the skin cells after attacking the lipid bilayers of the cell walls.

In other words, according to the theory, free radical cause internal and external cell damage, that lead to aging cells.

On finding a potent compound for the promotion of healthy aging, researchers examined the effects of major component of leaf extract of Ashwagandha (i-Extract) and within one withanone ((i-Factor) protected the normal human fibroblasts against the toxicity.

According to the tested results, in vitro both applications increase the division potential of normal human cells by protecting the cells against oxidative damage and induction of proteasomal activity.

Furthermore, the application also decreased the accumulation of molecular damage, by inhibiting the senescence-specific beta-galactosidase activity and the senescence marker protein, p21(WAF-1)associated with the process of deterioration of cells with age.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "we provide the first example of phytochemical(s) (i-Extract and withanone) that have ... antiaging activities and point to the molecular link between aging and cancer".

Taken altogether, Ashwagandha may be considered a functional herb that protects the cellular damage against aging, pending to the result of larger sample size and multicenter study

Healthy Food Cabbage, in Reducing the Risk of Cervical Cancer Developing

By Kyle J. Norton

Cervix formed part of the reproductive organ, is the lower part of the uterus that opens at the top of the vagina.

The cervix acts as a transition area (squamous columnar epithelium) for vaginal lining (squamous epithelium) to the uterus (columnar epithelium) to host the development of the fetus.

Cancer is the class of diseases associated with cell growth disorderly and uncontrollably due to the alternation of DNA.

Cervical cancer is a malignant neoplasm of the cervix uteri or cervical area caused by abnormal cells growth with alternation of cells DNA.

Researchers do not know what causes cervical cancer. Most cases of cervical cancer start in the cell on the surface of the inner lining tissue of the cervix. At this stage, most women with cervical cancer do not experience any symptoms.

At the advanced stage, invasive cancer can induce symptoms of abnormal bleeding, pain during sexual intercourse, increased vaginal discharge. If the tumor has suppressed the nearby nerve cells, cervical cancer can also cause localized severe pain.

According to the American Cancer Society's, in 2014, 12,360 new cases of invasive cervical cancer will be diagnosed with the death of 4,020 patients.

Epidemiological also suggested that HPV infection, sexual activity, smoking, giving birth many times. Infection with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV, history of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and long-term use of oral contraceptives are some prevalent risk factors of cervical cancer.

The risk of cervical cancer is also higher in Hispanic women followed by African-Americans, Asians and Pacific Islanders, and whites.

Cabbage is a species of Brassica oleracea belongings to the family Brassicaceae (or Cruciferae), native to the Mediterranean region along the seacoast. The veggie has a short stem that is crowded with a mass of green leaves, but in some varieties, it may be red or purplish.

With an aim to find a natural food that reduces the risk of malignant tumors, researchers investigated the activity of Indole-3-Carbinol (I3C), a phytochemical (derived from cabbage, and other cruciferous vegetables) on the reduction of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) and its progression to cervical cancer.

According to the tested assays,
* In vitro, I3C inhibited the diminished PTEN expression during the progression from low-grade to high-grade cervical dysplasia in humans,

In other words, the gene associated with tumor-suppressing activity not only was significantly inhibited before the onset of cervical cancer in patients with high-grade cervical dysplasia but also play a critical role in the initiation and progression of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN).

* In vivo, K14HPV16 transgenic mice model induced cervical cancer exerted overexpression of hormone estrogen.

* Dietary I3C in the tested models increased PTEN expression in the cervical epithelium of the transgenic mouse, to reduce the risk of development of cervical cancer.

Taken altogether, cabbage processed abundantly antioxidant I3C, may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention of cervical cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Broccoli, the Natural Detoxified Remedy

By Kyle J. Norton

Detoxification is a natural process in the removal of toxic substances of the human body, mainly carried out by the liver and kidney.

According to statistics, thousands of new chemicals are registered for use in foods, medications, household products, and lawn-care products, these types of environmental toxins also add to the risk of chronic illness in long term exposure.

Particularly, these chemical substances induced developmental toxins and neurotoxins exposed to pre- or post-natal babies have never been studied.

Some researchers suggested that detoxification also includes balancing the levels of antioxidants and free radicals.

Overexpression of ROS species caused by toxins accumulation may precipitate the elevation of oxidative stress and cytotoxicity that can lead to healthy cell DNA alternation.

In other words, increased antioxidant enzymes in the production of host antioxidants such as superoxide dismutase, superoxide dismutases (SODs),..... that break down the superoxide anion into oxygen and hydrogen peroxide may decrease oxidative stress by restoring the ratio of free radicals and antioxidants in the body.

Other common symptoms of toxin accumulation in the body include chronic fatigue, body odor, insomnia, food or chemical sensitivities and headaches.

Broccoli is a mustard/cabbage plant, belong to the family Brassicaceae. The veggie has large flower heads, usually green in color and the mass of flower heads surrounded by leaves and evolved from a wild cabbage plant on the continent of Europe.

On finding a potential plant that processes anticarcinogenic activity, researchers examined the effects of broccoli sprout extract (BSEx) on liver gene expression and acute liver injury in the rat.

The study included male rats that were divided into the control group fed the AIN-76 diet, and the BSEx group fed the AIN-76 diet containing BSEx for 10-days.

According to the results of rats, after a 10-d feeding period sacrificed, BSEx promoted the expression of genes related to detoxification and glutathione synthesis in normal rat liver.

APAP + BSEx fed groups significantly suppressed the levels of AST (70.91 ± 15.74 IU/mL vs 5614.41 ± 1997.83 IU/mL, P < 0.05) and ALT (11.78 ± 2.08 IU/mL vs 1297.71 ± 447.33 IU/mL, P < 0.05), compared to the APAP group.

Furthermore, he level of antioxidant ezymes, GSH (2.61 ± 0.75 nmol/g tissue vs 1.66 ± 0.59 nmol/g tissue, P < 0.05) and liver GST activity (93.19 ± 16.55 U/g tissue vs 51.90 ± 16.85 U/g tissue, P < 0.05) were significantly increased in the APAP + BSEx group compared with the APAP group.

Although AST (4820.05 ± 3094.93 IU/mL vs 12465.63 ± 3223.97 IU/mL, P < 0.05) and ALT (1808.95 ± 1014.04 IU/mL vs 3936.46 ± 777.52 IU/mL, P < 0.05) levels were significantly suppressed in the D-GalN + BSEx group. However, compared with the D-GalN group, the levels of AST and ALT in the D-GalN + BSEx group were higher than those in the APAP + BSEx group.

And, the level of GST activity was significantly higher in the D-GalN + BSEx group compared with the D-GalN group (98.04 ± 15.75 U/g tissue vs 53.15 ± 8.14 U/g tissue, P < 0.05).

Based on the evidence, researchers said, "BSEx protected the liver from various types of xenobiotic substances through induction of detoxification enzymes and glutathione synthesis".

Taken altogether,  broccoli may be considered liver detoxed functional food, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
